s c h o o l n e w sPresident’s MessageWelcome Royal Citizens … Welcome to the Emerald City! Some of youmay have heardthat Elphaba, one of the maincharacters in theBroadway acclaimedmusical Wicked, cameto Rosary at our firstassembly of the schoolyear to welcome andinspire our studentsand to challenge themto take advantage ofall that is RosaryHigh School. With the backdropof the Emerald City ofOz behind her, she welcomed each of the classes andexclaimed how beautiful it was to have everyone back oncampus and to feel their energy. She then encouraged theyoung women to face all the unknown challenges of the yearby relying on the sisterhood that is unique to Rosary andurged them to come together to “defy gravity.”She also reminded the students that they will always havefriends on their side, teachers in their corner, but mostimportantly, God as their inspiration and grace to help themthrough whatever may come their way in 2007-2008. Sheconcluded with the words from the musical:Unlimited“Together we’re unlimitedTogether we’ll be the greatest teamThere’s ever been ---.Dreams the way we planned ’emIf we work in tandemThere’s no fight we cannot winJust you and IDefying gravityWith you and IDefying gravity.”Elphaba’s hope and prayer is for all members of theRosary community to come together this year in order toprovide new opportunities for our young women so that theymay continue to become the Learners, Believers, and Leadersthey are called to be and that everyone may defy gravity ---TOGETHER --- for the good of Rosary. In the Royal spirit,www.rosaryhs.orgPROSPECTIVE STUDENT SCHEDULEInvite your family members, neighbors, youngwomen and their families to visit Rosary.OPEN HOUSESunday, November 18, 2007 • 12:00 - 3:00 p.m.STUDENT VISITATION DAYSWednesday, December 5, 2007and Thursday, December 6, 2007 • 8:00 - 11:00 a.m.RSVP requested – 714.879.2097INFORMATION NIGHTMonday, January 7, 2008 • 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TESTSaturday, January 26, 2008 • 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noonRegistration and fee requiredFor information, please contactMs. Trina Hartman, Director of Admissions714-879-8204 • thartman@rosaryhs.orgPhase II of TechnologyPhase II of Technology in the Classroom wascompleted during the summer of 2007. s c h o o l n e w s www.rosaryhs.orgPrincipal’s MessageDear Rosary Friends and Family,At the start of school assemblyboth Alex Busch, ASBPresident, and TrudyMazzarella (a.k.a. Elphaba from themusical “Wicked”) urged students ofall grade levels to “defy gravity.” I amhere to attest that our students haveenthusiastically taken flight! FromRosary Day to the Rosary day to day experience, high energy, creativity, and personal expression have soared. Student drivers andtheir carpools respond with respectful cooperation when dealing withconstruction challenges. They come to campus ten to twenty minutesearlier to find a parking spot and spend the extra minutes studying, resting, or visiting. When told the lot is full and they need to park onFullerton Creek Road, invariably each driver smiles and says,“Thank you!”The first edition of The Royal Reporter, our student newspaper, represented the high spirits and energy coursing through campus. It was bright, playful-clearly tongue in cheek- humor, informative,thought-provoking, and highly entertaining! The students, not unlike NASA astronauts, have a tremendoussupport system. Dedicated faculty, staff, parents and alumnae worktirelessly to provide a safe yet stimulating learning environment. Inparticular, I’d like to point out the multi-dimensional support fromour Parent Club and Booster Club. The Parent Club provides hospitality for student events andfaculty/staff spiritual formation and sponsors annual flu shots forfaculty and staff. They make the ever popular phone messagespossible. The Booster Club provides a myriad of resources for ourathletic and spirit programs. In addition, the members of the Parentand Booster Clubs share innovative ideas and suggestions. I inviteeach parent to join us at the meetings. This is an opportunity tomake a difference for our young women.Again I thank the students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumnae forlaunching the 2007-2008 school year. May God continue to blesseach of you.Warmest regards,Terry Gonzalez ’74PrincipalNina, Mia,Chris & MaryGutierrezWelcome FreshmanFamiliesNational Merit AnnouncementOctober 2007Last October over 1.4 million students took the2006 PSAT/National Merit ScholarshipQualifying Test.As a result of their performance on this exam, fewer than one percent of the nation’s current highschool seniors have been named Semifinalists in theNational Merit Scholarship Program. IN THE WORDS OF rose gauthier – Class of 2010Why did you choose to come to Rosary? I really wanted to gobecause my sister had come to Rosary and both my cousins hadcome here and talked about how much fun they had and all thecrazy fun times they had without boys. Some of my friends fromHoly Family were also coming here. What activities do you enjoy at Rosary? I really love ASB. I wasin ASB my freshman year and this year I am president of thesophomore class. I also do track and that is really exciting.Tell us about track… I am a sprinter and so I run the 100 and200 and my coach is Coach McGill. I really like Coach McGill ashe is really funny and at the end of practice when we do ourcrunches he sings songs! He focuses on the JV Team as well as theVarsity Team and encourages us to run fast and do our best. How would you explain the Rosary Spirit if you had to explainwhat it meant to come here to your friends or the students atHoly Family? It is just so eccentric and everyone is so excited tocome here because it is fun and you are excited to meet newfriends especially at lunch. The teachers at Rosary are so good andit is all so energetic. It’s just a great learning and bondingenvironment.Have you made new friends here? At first I just hung out withmy friends from Holy Family freshman year and some St.Norbert’s people too, as they were the only people I knew. Thisyear we call it the “combining tables” and I started to meet a lotof new people. I have closer friends now with people from otherschools as well as my Holy Family friends. What do you feel is important about the spirituality of aCatholic school? I think a lot about that because of my futureand because it is more expensive than public school, but it isreally important in the end. Public schools have greatlearning environments also, but at Catholic schools it is soeasy to express your religion. In public schools they haveall of these laws now about prayer and so it is great to beable to express yourself and pray whenever you want inthe Catholic environment. It is so great to express yourlove for God and to talk about it with those peoplearound you.Your sister is a junior and how is that to haveyour sister at school with you? It is really good. Weshare a room and so we are pretty close and alwaysseeing each other around campus. We sometimesfight to be sure, but it is nice having people herefrom the family. My cousin, Gina McDaniel is asenior, and my cousin, Shelly Zehner is afreshman. It is really nice. What was your first Red and Gold experiencelike last year? Last year I was in the choral andit was really fun and I loved it. I sang two songson stage and I was on the Red Team.Unfortunately we lost, but I am hoping to winthis year. I put down drill and dance as my onstagecategories because I want to try differentthings. Next year maybe I’ll try drama.English accent. She is really funny and makes learning so muchmore exciting. You talked about being on ASB. What are the most importantqualities in a leadership role like this? What would you expectfrom yourself or someone else in that role? I think it isresponsibility as it goes along with integrity and all the otherthings. If someone asks you to have something done, you need tohave it done as other people are counting on and benefiting fromwhat you have done. It is important to speak out as you arerepresenting the school, so you need to be able to voiceyour opinion. What is unique about the sophomore class? What is your classmascot? We are the Cheetahs. Everybody brings out the best ineveryone. I got to know people that I did not know last year andwe had so much fun. Even the shy and quiet people and theoutgoing people, we all talk to each other and we have so muchfun in class.Who is your class moderator? Mrs. Hein – she is great andpumps everyone up at the class meetings and always keeps usinformed about what we are going to be doing next.Rose GauthierWhat is your favorite subject? I lovechemistry this year. I have Mrs. Golcher as ateacher and she does a demo in every class likelighting stuff on fire and she talks with an12

IN THE WORDS OF Margaret-Ann Krieger – Class of 2008What do you love most about Rosary? Everyone says “sisterhood”and it is so cliché – but it is so true- just the sense of communitywhen I first came to the Open House. My dad started us when Iwas in 5th grade! Everyone was so welcoming. It was special witha sorority kind of feel to it and it was obvious even in fifth gradethat is was about being a part of something more than justourselves as individuals.Tell me what it is like to be on the varsity volleyball team. This is my first year on varsity, but I played on JV as well. Beinga senior on varsity is kind of bittersweet knowing that it is the firstyear and the last year. I am glad to have finally made it, as it was agoal. It is a wonderful kind of sisterhood. I always say that thosewho perspire with you know you really well. They see you at yourworst and you are still the greatest friends.Have you chosen where you want to go to school? My topschool is La Salle University in Philadelphia. I am going to doublemajor in Secondary Education and American Studies and then Ican be a high school teacher somewhere. In terms of being a Catholic school and your faith being reallyimportant to you, how do you think Rosary is able to weavethat into the school community? Through the religion classesthat we have here and that is pretty common in Christian orreligious schools, but I feel that our Masses are really important.I don’t know how many other Catholic schools have Masses, butour masses with the choir, with hand bells, orchestra and praiseband brings the community closer together. We pray togetherevery morning and we have outreach to the community throughother organizations. It is a very big part of Rosary. You are involved in the ambassador program. What do youshare with students when you go out to schools? For me, myelementary school is a couple of blocks away from Mater Dei andso I always stress that there are other options. Mater Dei is awonderful school but it was too big for me. I always tell the girlsthat you don’t have to go somewhere because it’s near you. So forme, the most important thing is that they keep their minds open. What do you admire most about your parents? For a long timemy father owned his own business and that was so inspiring tome. Obviously there is a lot of risk and hard work involved inthat. For years he left at four in the morning and we did not seehim until seven at night. We did not take many vacations and justhis dedication made its mark on me and is something that Idefinitely learned from my father and I appreciate. My mother isone of the hardest working people I know. She is a districtmanager in retail. Christmas is a little dicey in retail but she alwaysmakes time for family. She was a Girl Scout leader for ten yearsand now she is involved with PTA. I have a sense of balance of life– work and family and dedication, which has come from myparents. My faith was really instilled in me by my dad at a veryyoung age.As education becomes more expensive, what would you sayto someone who needed to be convinced that Rosary is aninvestment? To me I think of the comparison that you pay somuch for material things whether it is “designer this” or a carand there is nothing wrong with buying the best value; but ifyou are buying the best value in things, then why would younot invest in someone’s education, in someone’s life and insomeone’s future. I would hope that people would see theimportance of making sure that the next generation - whowill be taking care of them and become our future leaders have agreat education. To me that is a pretty solid investment and kindof a no-brainer. If you have the money, then I definitely suggest inputting it into future minds. You are in the O’Connor Institute – what does this group bringto Rosary? We try to put issues out there for people to see. I liketo think that we are a coalition with campus ministry and we gettogether and band together to keep the community informed likewith social justice month and presentations at Masses and prayerservices. I think it is really important to be involved in yourcommunity, the world, and what is happening. I think that theO’Connor Institute is really great to bring to Rosary.A year from now you will be off to LaSalle or anotheruniversity. As an alumna what would you hope to bring backto Rosary as you continue on in your career? I have thoughtabout this a little bit and part of me would want to come backand teach or coach and the other part is I don’t know where I willbe a couple of years from now. I feel that it is important to stayconnected and being involved and I cannot imagine not beinginvolved. Rosary is such a big part of me now. What will you remember most about he class of 2008? WhenI think of the class of 2008 I definitely think of our humor. Thereare so many wonderful girls and each of us are different in ourown way and so whenever we get together whether there are six orseven of us or the whole class it is just like one big party almost. We are all having fun and studying really hard and all of us bringsout something different and when you combine all of that it isjust like one big comedy act.Margaret-Ann Krieger13

I N H E R W O R D SMaureen Toner - alumnaMaureen TonerWhat did you enjoy most about going to Rosary?I think one of the most important aspects of Rosary is that atan incredibly crucial time in a young woman’s life you aresurrounded by a support system of women. I think that isfantastic. You are dealing with so much at that age family, boys, college expectations, hormones, jobs, extracurricular activities, and faith and learning how to balance it all. That training ispriceless. It really sets the standard of excellence for the rest ofyour life. Rosary is fun and sometimes overwhelming while youare there living it but when you are able to step away from it youcan see how much you've taken with you. Its funny, I've recentlyrealized that all of my female friends went to a Catholic all girls’high school. All of them. There is something to be said for that. What teacher/mentor had the greatest impact on youand why?Mrs. Horne and her steps of dating. Who can forget that? It wasthe most uncomfortable thing to discuss with an 'Ol lady butyears later it still comes in handy. What college did you go to, what did you study? How well didyour Rosary experience prepare you for college?I went to University of the Arts in Philadelphia and earned myBFA in Modern Dance Performance but I had transferred fromOrange Coast College. Rosary really prepared me to take on aworkload that allowed me to transfer and graduate on time. Iwas taking about 27 units a semester and it was easy. I wasinvolved in Tri-school while I was at Rosary and the long hourswe spent in the theatre really honed my work ethic. My days incollege were 12-14 hours long in the classroom but it was okbecause I understood what it meant to write a paper while youwere waiting in the wings. I'd be hanging over a bar stretchingwriting an essay on Stravinsky and the Ballets Russes. What are you doing now that you are out of college?Figuring out my next step. You're never done. You've got to keepmoving in order to grow. Sure I work in Admissions at a schooland I live in LA but that’s just a stepping-stone.What are you most passionate about - what gives you thegreatest joy?If I won the lotto I would dance all day and do volunteer work.I love the expression that comes with dancing and I love helpingpeople. I love being able to look into someone’s eyes and makethem know that it is going to be ok. Everyone needs that. What year did you graduate? What do you remember mostabout the collective spirit of your class?I graduated in 2000 and what I remember about the collectivespirit of my class is that we were all crazy. I'm pretty sure I havepictures of Natalie Golda running around the field in herunderwear during senior week. That pretty much sums up theentire class. We were always being silly and every effort madewas geared to have a good time. We were always laughing.14If you could share a bit of wisdom with the class of 2008what would it be?Ha-ha-ha I've got a few mottos I live by. Be nice. Adjust. Laugh. They sound silly but believe me they are so important.Be nice: Everyone needs to work hard to be kind to one anotherespecially when it’s hard.Adjust: Life is not set in stone you have to learn to roll with thepunches. Adjust to life’s changes, adjust to one another’s needs, adjust to expectations, and adjust to outcomes.Laugh: Life is just funny!
