Turbulent mixing of oil droplets in a round water jet

PrefaceSeptember 2003 I started my graduation project at the section fluid dynamics of the Delft Universityof Technology. During my practical training at Unilever Research Vlaardingen, I got incontact with René Delfos, research staff member of fluid dynamics, and thought that he could bethe right person to guide me through the last stage of my study Applied Physics. His scientificattitude and willingness to put a lot of effort in his students, were decisive. Besides, I was verymuch attracted to the ease of manner of the fluid dynamics department.This project was part of a five years research programme to liquid-liquid dispersions with turbulencein which several experiments were planned on turbulent flow of low to moderate concentrateddispersions of two immiscible liquids. The balance between droplet break-up and coalescence, determiningthe droplet size distribution, is one of the main issues of interest [Delfos, 2002]. Myfocus has been on the dispersion of small oil droplets in a turbulent jet to get more insight in themixing process. The results of this experimental work are described in this report. The cooperationwith René was very pleasant and instructive, for which I am very grateful.
