For example, information extracted by thequery tool may be exported to HTML in order to serveas input to a browser.Support for transcription in the workbench itself isfairly primitive. However, it is possible to use Transcriber(www.etca.fr/CTA/gip/Projets/Transcriber) forthe transcription process and then use the transcriptionfiles in the MATE workbench for further annotation atthe desired level(s). Figures 8 and 9 show two examplesof what the interface looks like when some of theMATE best practice coding modules are used for annotatingdialogues. Figure 8 shows an example of annotationat the morpho-syntactic level (word level). Figure 9shows dialogue acts annotation using MapTask coding.A number of default style sheets define how outputis visually presented to the user. For instance, phenomenaof interest in the corpus may be given a certaincolour or shown in boldface, cf. Figures 8 and 9. AMATE stylesheet is written in the MATE StylesheetLanguage (MSL). The emerging standard in this area isXSLT. Since XSLT was not fully defined when theworkbench was being designed, and since XSLT lacksvarious necessary functionalities it was decided to implementa slightly different and simpler transformationlanguage. MSL uses the MATE query language but isotherwise similar to XSLT. The user may modify astyle sheet or define new ones. However, as no stylesheeteditor is available yet, a fairly detailed understandingof XSLT concepts and structure is required.The audio tool, cf. Figure 11, allows the user to loada sound file which is then displayed as a waveform andwhich can be played. It is also possible to play parts of afile by setting up display actions with a stylesheet.Clicking on the green PLAY buttons in Figure 9 willcause the utterance audio file to be played.The workbench supports information extractionfrom annotated corpora, including statistical information.Moreover, computation of important reliabilitymeasures, such as kappa values, is enabled. Figure 10shows the MATE query window. The user must firstselect the documents to be queried. Secondly, one chooseselement types to be included in the query expressionfrom those available in the selected documents. Thenthe query expression can be built. The result of a queryis a document with a list of tuples of elements that arehrefs to the elements found. Since the output of thequery is XML, the results can be displayed to the userin the same way as the data itself, using a stylesheet. Adefault stylesheet is provided, but different views couldbe desirable for specific purposes.4. Future prospectsA major aim of MATE has been to support spokenlanguage dialogue systems development. The marketfor these systems is growing rapidly and so is the needfor re-usable resources and tools which facilitate theircreation. MATE has therefore in many respects beentimely and appropriate in responding to actual needs.However, the next generation of spoken dialoguesystems are taking first steps towards more naturalinteractivity by combining speech with other modalitiessuch as gesture and facial expression. As such multimodaldialogue systems are gaining ground, the needfor reusable multimodal resources, for tools, and forstandardisation efforts in support of the development ofsuch systems is also increasing. A natural follow-up onMATE would therefore be to map out existing codingschemes and tools for markup of gesture or facialexpression using the same successful approach as forspoken dialogue in MATE. Several projects in the areahave been initiated recently, e.g. TalkBank and ATLAS.A survey of such coding schemes and tools is beingmade in the ISLE project. ISLE results plus MATEresults could form an appropriate point of departure forthe development of a standard framework covering notonly speech but also gesture and facial expression, andfor the development of best practice coding schemesand a set of tools in support of annotation and exploitationof multimodal dialogues.Figure 8.
