The FTS engine uses the

The FTS engine uses the final search criteria to search the contents of allrequests indexed for that field, and it uses one of three search methods:■■■Accrue searchesPhrase searchesCharacter searchesNote:All the following examples are using FTS in the AdvancedSearch Bar, not QBE. They also assume that the FTS SearchOptions is set to Query Unchanged. For more information, see“Configuring FTS Options” on page 4-22.Accrue SearchesDuring an accrue (OR) search, the FTS engine finds requests that contain anyof the specified words in a field, instead of matching a string of characters. TheFTS engine matches the pattern of the characters specified in the search. Forexample, consider the following accrue search: LIKE "hello, world, greetings"The search criteria returns requests with any of the three words. You cannotuse an accrue search to search for punctuation or other special characters. For more information about using an accrue search, see “Using the AccrueOperator” on page 4-8.Phrase SearchesDuring a phrase (word) search, the FTS engine finds requests that contain thespecified words in the field, instead of matching a string of characters. Toperform a phrase search, use double-quotation marks around the words youwant to search for and use leading and trailing wild cards, as in the followingexample: LIKE "%%"For example, consider the following phrase search: LIKE "%hello%"4-6 Action Request System Administrator’s Guide, Volume 2

Performing a Search in a Field Indexed for FTSThe search criteria "%hello%" returns requests with hello world and hello, world. You cannot use a phrase search to search for punctuation or otherspecial characters.A phrase search is especially useful for finding embedded words that are notword stems. If your phrase search includes the word cat, it also finds thewords housecat and catatonic.See “FTS Issues When Performing Searches” on page 4-11 for moreinformation.Character SearchesUnlike accrue or phrase searches (which are word-based), the FTS engine usesa character search to finds requests that match the string of characters basedon the contents of the entire field. To perform a character search, use doublequotationmarks around the words you want to search for, as in the followingexample: LIKE ""For example, consider the following character search: LIKE "world"The search criteria returns only those requests that contain exactly thecharacter string world in the field. If the field contains hello world, acharacter search does not return this request. However, you can add either aleading wild card or a trailing wild card to increase the scope of a charactersearch. (If you use both a leading and a trailing wild card, you are no longerusing a character search; you are using a phrase search instead.) For example, consider this search with a leading wild card: LIKE "%world"The search criteria %world returns requests with world at the end of the field, such as hello world or a small world. If you add a trailing wild card to thesearch criteria, as LIKE "world%", the search criteria returnsrequests with world at the beginning of the field, such as world without end.But you will not find a request with a field that begins with hello world.Full Text Search 4-7
