Moving to ProductionTo

Moving to ProductionTo move the components of your development environment to productionsafely, you can use an export/import method, you can modify the productionenvironment manually, or you can use a combination of these methods. If youare unfamiliar with Remedy Import or the Export function of RemedyAdministrator, see the Action Request System Administrator’s Guide,Volume 1.For some forms, such as those with few changes or with large amounts of data,it may make more sense to make the changes manually. Updates to otherforms, such as those with many changes or with little data, might be betterhandled by the export/import method.Note:When you delete a field, all data for that field is removed fromthe database. If you want to keep data associated with a fieldthat you want to delete, export the data for that field. You canimport the data later to a new field.Exporting/ImportingBy using the export/import method, you eliminate the risk of omitting some ofthe changes you made in the development environment. If a form andworkflow functioned correctly in the development environment, they willfunction correctly in the production environment. However, you must save thedata associated with a production form before you import a development form;you can then import the data when the new form is in place. There is no data associated with workflow (filters, escalations, and activelinks) and character menus. They are related to specific forms or fields by formname or field ID.➤Updating Your Environment by the Export/Import Method1. Export the development form.2. Do a server-independent export of the development workflow andcharacter menus.3. Export data associated with your production form.8-6 Action Request System Administrator’s Guide, Volume 2

Manual Changes4. Delete the production form, workflow, and character menus.5. Import the new form to the production environment.6. Import the new workflow and character menus to the productionenvironment.7. Import the data to the new form.Ensure that your development form has the same name as the productionform. If the names do not match, workflow and menus you want associatedwith the new production form will not function.Manual ChangesBy updating your form, workflow, and character menus manually, youeliminate compatibility issues between development and production. Also, youdo not have to export and import the data. However, this method is timeconsuming and tedious. For every change you made in the developmentenvironment, you must make the same change in the production environment.Because there is no data associated with workflow, you may find it easier andless time consuming to delete some of your workflow and recreate it with yourmodifications.➤Updating Your Environment Manually1. Determine the differences between the development environment and theproduction environment.2. Use Remedy Administrator to modify the production form, workflow, andcharacter menus so they match the development form, workflow, andcharacter menus.3. Ensure that there are no differences between the development andproduction components. If there are differences, modify your production components as needed andrepeat this step.Moving from Development to Production 8-7
