Verify that your port numbers are correct.Note:You are not required to use the TCP port numbers in sequence(except for fast and list server ranges).4. Save the ar configuration file.5. Start the AR System server.6. If you are using Windows NT and thread logging is activated, view the\db\arthread.log file to verify that the AR Systemserver threads have started successfully.➤Assigning a Port Number to a Notification Server1. Stop the notification server.2. If you have not done so already, create the nfy configuration file.■■On UNIX, create the nfy.conf file in the etc directory. On Windows NT, create the nfy.cfg file in the conf directory.3-24 Action Request System Administrator’s Guide, Volume 2

Configuring Clients3. Open the nfy configuration file.4. Enter the port number in the following format:TCD-Specific-Port: 1010Notifier-Specific-Port: 1050Register-With-Portmapper: FDo not assign port numbers that conflict with port numbers used by otherapplications or programs running on your system, because your serversmight not start as expected. To find out which port numbers are already inuse, use the rpcinfo -p command (UNIX) or the netstat -a command(Windows NT) at the command line prompt.5. Save the nfy configuration file.6. Start the notification server.Configuring ClientsTo access private AR System servers, client machines must have the ARRPCenvironment variable set. To avoid the portmapper when accessingAR System servers, client machines must have the ARTCPPORT environmentvariable set. To avoid the portmapper when accessing notification servers, client machines must have the NTTCPPORT environment variable set. Thissection includes instructions for configuring these variables on your clientmachines.Note:You can configure Windows, UNIX, and Macintosh clients toaccess a private server. However, you can configure onlyWindows and UNIX clients to avoid the use of a portmapperwhen connecting to a server.Windows ClientsOn Windows clients, a private server is configured in the ar.ini file. Theconfiguration to avoid the use of a portmapper is different for 16-bit systems(including Windows 95) and 32-bit systems.AR System Servers 3-25
