Executive SummaryHow to

Executive SummaryHow to synthesize the data to guideadaptation planningThe results from each component are ranked on a scalefrom one to five and then combined into an integrativetool to assess the vulnerability of the mangrove area. The most critical components of the vulnerabilityassessment are those that assess the exposure factorsof relative sea level rise and sediment supply, and thesensitivity factors of forest condition, recent spatialchange and sedimentation rates. These identify thetipping points for the mangrove area, whereas theother results may help but are less critical. Alsoimportant is local community knowledge, which is anindicator of social vulnerability rather than a directmeasure of ecosystem vulnerability. This vulnerability ranking facilitates the identificationof adaptation actions that reduce the identifiedvulnerabilities and increase resilience. There are threecategories of actions: reduction of existing (nonclimate)threats, direct adaptation actions and ongoingmonitoring (which is of great importance). Theseactions include• improving local management• improving legislation• establishing strategic protected areas• rehabilitating degraded mangrove areas• selecting “climate-smart” species• managing for accretion in mangroves• proactive planning for changed conditions• continued monitoring of mangrove extent andcondition• continued monitoring of mangrove sedimentationratesThe vulnerability assessment ranking helpsconservation practitioners prioritize, among possibleadaptation actions, those that will be of the greatestbenefit in a particular site. These actions are what canbe done to reduce the vulnerability of the mangrovesystem to the impacts of sea level rise, in particular, and to increase the adaptive capacity of people livingnear the mangroves to assist in this process.Overall analysisThe synthesis of results from the different vulnerabilityassessment components helps to identify the mostappropriate adaptation actions. The methods areapplicable to mangroves in different geomorphicsettings (riverine, deltaic, fringe, lagoonal and lowislands); and guidance is given on the differentsensitivities of each type. Through the case studypilots, WWF has developed this generalizedmethodology for assessing vulnerability in mangroveecosystems and developing adaptation strategies toassist conservation practitioners around the world. Wehope that this manual provides useful guidance for thiscritical task.We welcome feedback and the sharing of experiences, which can be sent directly to the author:Joanna.Ellison@utas.edu.auPhoto: Joanna EllisonClimate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Planning for Mangrove Systems | xi
