30-31 The Protector:Master Galley - Plain Truth

y AaronMatthewKaisert was late when I pulledup in front of my house.Every night that weekhad been spentgallivanting around townand returning in thewaning hours of thenight. As I shifted intopark and turned off theignition, I noticed that asolitary light was on inmy living room. Perhaps Ihad been careless when Ihad departed earlier thatnight, but I could notshake the feeling thatsomething was amiss.I fumbled in the darknessoutside through my various keys, searching for the one that wouldlet me in out of the cold. Ishivered as I watched my breathform small clouds mere inchesfrom my mouth. Finally, I opened the door and Irushed inside, away from thebitterly harsh elements of thewinter night. Before I could turn around, I feltit. The presence of someone in theroom with me. I slowly removedmy jacket and hung it on the coatrack and turned to face my visitor. There I saw the familiar figure ofthe one not welcome in my home.“Hello, old friend.” He looked atme with a devious smile.“What are you doing here?” Iretorted. Across the room hestrode, coming closer with eachstep.“Why, you invited me in,” hereplied. “Don’t you remember?”My mind flashed back to thenights spent before. Imagesresurfaced of the tonics consumedin the downtown nightlife.Memories of recent indiscretionsand momentary lapses ofjudgment. My past sins and myrecent pains all wrapped up intoone enormous feeling of guilt andself loathing. And here before me to gloatabout it all was my old self. Theone I had left behind years agoand told to never return. Yet, herehe was. And he was right. I hadinvited him in. I asked him toreturn with my very actions. Thelife I was now living was of myown desire, purposely plotted outbecause of my pain anddesperation.“I don’t want you here,” I toldhim.“If that were true,” he said, stillI could not respond. I could not speak. Theshock of seeing him here and knowingthat I did not possess the power to forcehis removal had paralyzed me,every muscle in my bodyinvoluntarily frozen.smiling, “then I wouldnot have come in thefirst place. No, youinvited me and here Iwill stay. In fact, Iwould like to stay for awhile. I noticed thatyou have a verycomfortable bed. Youdon’t mind taking thecouch during my visit,do you?”I could not respond. Icould not speak. Theshock of seeing him here andknowing that I did not possess thepower to force his removal hadparalyzed me, every muscle in mybody involuntarily frozen.“You…you can’t stay.” I quietlystammered.“Tell me,” he sneered. “Where isyour protector?”Again, more thoughts surfaced. This time of the man who hadsaved me from my antagonist onanother winter night many yearsbefore. Onto my back I had fallen, intoxicated and overwhelmed bythis world. He had picked me upout of the gutter and given menew life. I had kept him close formany years, but eventually grewtired of his company. I wanted tolive my own life and dictate myown direction. And so, I had left him behind asI had my old self all those yearsprior. My eyes lowered and I began tocry. I was beaten downemotionally.
