188 OAMP strategies and

188 OAMP strategies and fundamentals– All cards are installed.– Grounding is implemented for safety.• All network topology (physical characteristics) is implemented asplanned.• Installation validation procedures are complete and components arefound to be operational. (For example, when you install and loadsoftware and turn pieces of equipment on, then the equipment iscommissioned.)• The sequence of translations, internal customer testing, and additionalservices, applications, and features have been planned.Network Element Instance maintenanceConfiguration of a network element instance is a statement of intent; theact of configuration does nothing to bring the instance into being. Thenetwork element does not physically exist until it has been deployed.Deployment of an element is the act of populating a server's file systemwith the software load and data files needed by that element in order torun. Undeployment is the reverse operation; the file system is purged ofthe instance's software and data files. The NE daemon running on theserver is responsible for carrying out these activities when prompted by theadmin. After an instance has been deployed, the Start operation brings it intoservice in order to provide its intended function in the network. The Stopoperation takes the instance out of service gracefully (allowing for systemcleanup prior to shutdown). These maintenance activities are also carriedout through the NE daemon running on the server. The Restart button is ashortcut for Stop followed by Start. The NE daemon keeps track of instances that it has started and will restartthem if they exit unexpectedly. If a restart attempt fails it will be repeatedimmediately. If it fails again a third attempt is made. If that attempt alsofails, NE daemon waits five minutes and will then try three additional times. If those restart attempts also fail, NE daemon will continue to start thegiven instance indefinitely. There is also a Kill button. This button forcibly kills the instance using the"sigterm -9" signal. The instance is immediately terminated, bypassing theshutdown process (no graceful cleanup).AttentionWith the addition of live update of network data and the new instance maintenancecommands, the Lock and Unlock commands available in previous releases are nolonger necessary and have been eliminated.15 August 2014 EXPERiUS Application Server NN48111-111 09.02Copyright © 2010-2014 GENBAND. Configuration fundamentals 189Both deploying and starting an instance panel (and the reverse of theseoperations) are maintenance operations performed in the SystemManagement Console. The State column in a network element maintenance window describes themaintenance state of the network element instance. It contains one of thevalues shown in the following table.Variable DefinitionsVariable Value DescriptionState CONFIGURED The instance has been configured but not yetdeployed.DEPLOYINGOFFLINESTARTINGCONNECTEDINITIALIZINGSYNCSTANDBYACTIVATINGThe Deploy operation puts the instance into thisstate, where it remains until deployment hascompleted. Successful deployment sets the stateto OFFLINE; if deployment fails for any reason, the set returns to CONFIGURED.The instance has been deployed but is notrunning. The Start operation puts the instance into thisstate. The instance remains in this state until theNE daemon has started the instance and theinstance is able to communicate with the SystemManager. The instance progresses to this state when theinstance initiates communication with the SystemManager. If the instance is part of a fault-tolerant networkelement and the other instance is already active, the instance will progress to this state andremain in it until a switch of activity is required. All network elements that are provisioned as apair have an active and inactive node. When thesecond node is started, the "Oper" status showsthe status of syncing. This indicates that the NEshould not be failed over. Some featurefunctionality is not guaranteed to work if an NE isfailed over while the inactive unit is still syncing. The instance progresses to this state when itssubsystems have initialized and thedetermination has been made that the instanceshould become active. The instance progresses to this state once it isoperational and capable of providing service.15 August 2014 Product Description NN48111-111 09.02Copyright © 2010-2014 GENBAND.
