Ian’s StoryIan is a bright light to those around him. He is positive, kind, funny and smart. His story is one ofpossibilities for a person who wants to be successful in both his personal and professional life. Ianexperiences Autism and doesn’t use words to communicate. However, his disability is not whatdefines who Ian is.Ian lives in a companion home and is fortunate to have an ideal housemate, Corky. Corky andIan understand one another. Additionally, Corky’s family members have become a big part of Ian’salready wonderful family of origin. Corky’s mom, Sue likes to enjoy time with Ian by walking, goingout to dinner at the country club and other funactivities. Ian is close to his family and theybelieve in him and his abilities. His mom Kathyand his sister Shannon along with his Dad, andextended family really love and respect Ian. Itshows in his face and demeanor. Ian smiles a lot.Even though he lives independently in companionhome living, he still sees his family often andenjoys good times with them. This solidconnection to the people who love him is thecornerstone to his easy, bright way in the world.Ian goes camping a couple times every year, hewalks a lot, has several good friends and likesactivities that keep him busy. His goals are to findwork that is physical in nature and to stay active inhis community by participating in events, havingfun and enjoying the people he loves. He hasalways had support in his goals with the help of hisextended family, friends, and neighbors. For thepast two and half years, he has met some othersto help him realize his goals such as anemployment specialist and the Clark CountyBuilding Careers and Community (BCC) projectcoordinator, Ginevra.Building Careers and Community helped Ian tobring together his team of family and serviceHow the Initial Person Centered PlanHappened for Ian and his Family:Ian and his mom determined who to inviteto his meeting.Ginevra helped to gather all of the peopletogether at the pizza parlor, where Ianwanted to have his meeting.Ian invited Corky, his mom and his sisteralong with his case manager, personalagent, Ginevra, Stephanie, who is the BCCcommunity connector, and two peoplefrom his employment services agency.The first part of the meeting included timefor people to get to know and becomecomfortable with each other in order tohelp Ian plan out some goals.Ginevra facilitated a brainstorming sessionwith the group about how Ian couldaccomplish his long term career andvolunteer goals. Lots of great ideasemerged.Together they came up with very specificgoals and steps to get there.Everyone made commitments to followthrough and stay connected with goodcommunication.providers to develop a plan for getting a job and expanding his friends and community. Kathy andCorky took the primary role of working with Ginevra and the employment specialists, Wendy andEmily, to champion Ian’s goals and dreams, while keeping other family and friends informed. Theymet together and also used email correspondence to keep the people in Ian’s life updated and
