The day began withan overview of economic development and land use planning inDouglas County. Topics covered included: what comprises a desirablearea for a business to relocate to, the types of new programs thatthe County is utilizing to remain competitive as well as some nextsteps that Douglas County is taking. A community is not judged bywhere it is today but by where it is going. To compliment economicdevelopment, the class listened to a presentation about the DouglasCounty’s Comprehensive Master Plan and all of the factors that areconsidered in developing such a plan. Currently we have 283,000people in Douglas County and it is estimated that the number willrise to over 455,000 by 2035.Ambassadorof the MonthDr. Matt SwagerEvery time Dr. Matt Swager shopped at the Outletsor visited Castle Rock, it just felt right. Sincemoving to Town in December of 2005, his reasonis a popular one, “I love that Castle Rock keeps thesmall town feel, yet gives you every convenienceof a larger town, and the people that live here aregreat.”Matt has been a chamber member for just a littleover a year, even before he opened his business doors. Matt knew that thebest way to promote his business was to be a member of the Chamber.Dr. Swager’s friendly demeanor lends itself to ambassadorship, a servicegroup of the Chamber that appeals to the extrovert. Matt liked the idea ofbeing a Chamber Ambassador and the fact that he gets to meet so manygreat people. And being young in his field, he likes that he gets to helpbusinesses that are just starting out, by telling them what he has learned.Being an Ambassador also gives me a chance to be involved in what is goingon in Castle Rock.Matt says that being an ambassador has really helped his business by allowinghim to be very active and meet numerous people so that his businessTwo of our natural resources which were covered are the hot topics ofenergy and water. It was enlightening to listen to in-depth presentationsand learn how the water and energy issues affect us locallyand how legislation, such as Amendment 37, is affecting policy.Over 50% of the energy in the US is produced through coal, and inColorado it is 74%. Nationally, it is estimated that the demand willincrease by 19% over the next 10 years.The day was rounded out with an ethics presentation by ChrisAdams of the Adams Group and a facilitated discussion by JamieLaRue of Douglas County Libraries.“This was one of my favorite sessions! Sustainability is not only ahot and current issue; it deals with the future- ours, and many generationsto come.” Aspen Walker, class participant- Douglas CountyLibrariesname is recognizable. The greatest thing that the Chamber does for creatingbusiness opportunities, is organizing events that encourage you to take theinitiative in networking and meeting other business owners with whom youmight not normally interact.Dr. Swager is the owner of Back 2 Health Chiropractic with certifications inpediatrics and pregnancy care. Matt is also a certified strength and conditioningspecialist and will soon be starting his sports medicine certification.He really emphasizes family and sports care.Back 2 Health Chiropractic does multiple volunteering, including freesports physicals, volunteering at games, and currently organizing a charityvolleyball tournament. Back 2 Health is also actively involved in the ColoradoChiropractic Association, American Chiropractic Association, NationalStrength and Conditioning Association, and the International ChiropracticPediatrics Association.Although Matt is a self-professed animal lover, at present the multiple fishtanks is his office are his only pets. When time permits, Dr. Swager enjoysgolfing, hunting, fishing, riding his motorcycleand practicing Krav Maga martial arts.
