Spring 2011 - Arun & Adur CAMRA

Peter F. Mitchell, Chris

Peter F. Mitchell, Chris Pobjoy, Alex Pope, Stephan Ritchie, Peter Spooner, Chris Stringer, Philip Wildsmith and the Ed.Timothy Taylor are regulars with three furtherguest ales, recently Arundel Autumn Old.BROADBRIDGE HEATHBroadbridge Heath Village Centre’s wellkeptFuller’s London Pride is on sale permanentlywith guest beers from breweriesincluding Andwell, Dark Star, WJ King, Welton’sand Fuller’s. They are a member of theLocAle scheme and, although they are a membersclub, CAMRA members are welcome onproduction of a CAMRA card.CHELWOOD GATEThe Red Lion (Shepherd Neame) has gainednew licensees. Master Brew and Spitfire arethe regular beers, with a third (seasonal) usuallynow available. The pub is now open onMonday evenings 5-11pm, although it isclosed Sunday evenings after 5pm.CHICHESTERThe Chichester pub of that name is nowcharging higher prices for certain of theirbeers than anywhere else I personally havefound in the country: i.e. £3.75 for IrvingFrigate (Portsmouth) and £3.80 for Hop BackSummer Lightning (Wiltshire). The justificationgiven to a branch member was that thesebeers being unusual for the area merited thatsort of price. The locally sourced beers aremore typically priced for the city and the qualityhas been very good on two recent visits.CHILGROVEAlthough a very upmarket establishment, theFish House is very comfortable inside, withpleasant and friendly staff. Two beers are onhand pump, Arundel Gold and Harveys Best, the latter in very good condition and pricesnot unreasonable.COLGATEAfter being closed for nearly a year, the Hall &Woodhouse-owned Dragon reopened duringNovember.COOTHAMVery good Arundel Mild found at the Crown.CRAWLEYThe excellent community back-street local, theSwan, holds beer festivals in the spring andautumn, is a regular outlet for Kissingate alesand will be having a mild week in May.EASTBOURNEThe Marine has three ales on offer: HarveysBest, Wychwood Hobgoblin and Fuller’s LondonPride. Good quality food is also available. The London & County, Lloyds No. 1, carries agood range of ales and recently had as a ‘guestpremium ale’ in excellent condition, the localWhite’s Conqueror. A recent visit to the DewdropInn found four beers available only oneof which came from Greene King, despite thepub being tied to that brewery. Of particularnote was Moorhouse’s Black Cat Mild. Boththis pub and the Eagle are offering CAMRAmembers ten-pence per pint discount. TheCounting House serves three ales, often fromthree different local breweries, but beer fromfurther afield was available over Christmaswith Conwy brewery’s Hoppy Christmas foundin excellent form. By common consent and notfor the first year, the best Harveys Old of thewinter in the town has been found at theHurst Arms, while seasoned Harveys Bestdrinkers claim that the Victoria is the pub todrink it in.EAST DEANFollowing its success as Beer of the Festival atEastbourne in October, Beachy Head LeglessRambler is now a regular beer at the Tiger,Beachy Head’s brewery tap.FERNHURSTThe Kings Arms has closed & re-opened asWheelers (in large letters), Marco PierreWhite (in slightly less large letters), KingsArms (in very small letters). The landlord &landlady of the Red Lion in the same villageinformed Western Sussex branch membersthat Wheelers is now purely a restaurantwhere a drink cannot be had without an accompanyingmeal, that the bar area had beenreduced and only keg beer was now sold – i.e.no real ale or cider.continued overleaf >Sussex Drinker: Spring 2011 7
