The council consistsof the Associate Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, theDirector of Research Services and Sponsored Programs, representatives of theFaculty Senate, various college deans and institute directors, and General Counsel.Sponsored research activities on campus are coordinated by the Interim f>.ssociateVice President for Research and Technology Transfer and the Director ofResearch Services and Sponsored Programs.Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied PoliticsJohn C. Green, Ph.D., DirectorThe Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Pclitics is a public education and researchadjunct of The University of Akron and its Department of Pclitical Science. Thebroad purposes of the institute, in keeping with the career of its namesake, RayC. Bliss, are: to give all citizens, and particularly students, an opportunity to learnhow to become active and competent in political life; to help maintain a traditionof ethical public service in politics; to foster useful relationships between appliedpolitics and political science; to promote public comprehension of political organ~zations and the requirements for their effectiveness; and to improve understandingof continuity and change in American political institutions.Institute for BiomedicalEngineering ResearchStanley Rittgers, Ph.D., DirectorThis institute was established in 1979 to promote interdisciplinary studies in therapidly growing areas of knowledge which overlap the fields of biology and medicine,on the one hand, and engineering and the physical sciences, on the other.It conducts seminars, courses and degree programs in biomedical engineering inassociation with the College of Engineering and individual departments.In addition to its research and educational functions, the institute provides aresearch service to local hospitals and industry, as well as to private and governmentagencies. The premise for this program is that the combined resources ofthe University, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and affiliatedorganizations will often permit more cost-€ffective solutions than would be poss~ble by an individual or group doing the research independently.The work of the institute is carried out by faculty of the Department of BiomedicalEngineering in association with "members" selected from the faculties of TheUniversity of Akron and Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, aswell as from the ranks of area physicians, engineers and scientists. The instituteand the department occupy the third floor of the Olson Research Center on thenorth edge of the campus.Center for Economic EducationFred M. Carr, Ph.D., DirectorThe center exists to improve the economic literacy of individuals to help themfunction competently as citizens, producers and consumers.The center conducts workshops, seminars and economic programs for teachers,students and interested groups. It provides consulting services in the area of economiceducation and acts as a clearinghouse for the gathering and disseminationof economic education materials and programs. It also fosters an understandingand appreciation of the American economic system.Center for Environmental StudiesAnnabelle M. Foos, Ph.D., Interim DirectorThe Center for Environmental Studies matches the expertise of 95 affiliates in 33disciplines with the needs of students seeking study and research opportunitiesin complex environmental issues. Since its founding in 1970, the center has sponsored,or in other ways supported, activities appropriate to the goal of attaining aquality environment for mankind.The center coordinates special forums, workshops and seminars that addressmajor issues. Examples include the National Energy Forum, the World FoodForum, and Evaluation of Environmental Data. Workshops on energy, natural historyand environmental studies in England also emphasize the interdisciplinaryapproach to the resolution of issues.Center for Family BusinessSusan C. Hanlon, D. B.A., DirectorThe Center for Family Business provides seminars, conferences and round tablegroups to help business owners address problems unique to family enterprises.The Center seeks to increase the survival rate of family-owned businesses byfocusing attention on the special challenges inherent in multigenerational familyenterprises.Center for Family StudiesHelen K. Cleminshaw, Ph.D., DirectorThe Center for Family Studies, established in 1979, was designed to stimulate andencourage the interdisciplinary study of the family. It serves both the Universityand the community by fostering collaboration between faculty, students, practitionersand community leaders on curriculum development, educational conferencesand seminars, research and training, and public policy relevant to importantfamily issues.The Center is represented by faculty from 5 colleges and over 15 disciplines. Italso includes leaders from various community systems, such as the schools, hospitals,courts, churches, mental health, social and health care agencies. In add~tion, the Center has a fellows program in which outstanding faculty andcommunity leaders are named as either fellows, adjunct fellows or senior fellows.The Center offers certificates in the following specialty areas: Divorce Mediationand Home-Based Intervention. Please refer to the sections on Certificate Programsin this Bulletin or the General Bulletin for further information.Any student, faculty member or community person interested in family issues isinvited to call the director to learn how they can participate or learn more aboutthe Center's activities.Training Center for Fire andHazardous MaterialsDavid H. Hoover, Ph.D., DirectorThe Training Center for Fire and Hazardous Materials brings the University, governmentand industry together into one comprehensive regional center to integrateeducational programs, tire and hazardous materials training and other applicationsof fire and safety technology. The center coordinates seminars and workshopspresented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). the Divisionof State Fire Marshal and other related organizations. Training in all phases of hazardousmaterials containment and tire prevention and control is provided undercontract to various municipalities, industnes and agencies. The programs are supportedby the faculty of the Fire Protection Technology degree program in assoc~ation with other state and nationally recognized professionals.
