-3-Research in the PTCL

-3-Research in the PTCL has continued strongly, despite the inevitable disruption caused bythe relocation of many laboratories arising from moves into the newly-completed CRL,which at a rough count involved almost half of the academic staff and their groups. Thetotal number of our D. Phils., a measure of activity which fluctuates annually with amaximum at the start of each academic year, was due to reach 101 in October 2004, a 3-digit ‘first’ for the department, as we looked forward to welcoming 25 new graduatestudents; another modest record was set by the 212 publications by PTCL staff this year.Research grant income, at a lab total of around £2.7M, was slightly lower than recentyears, though high levels of current applications hold the promise of a significant increasein the foreseeable future. The moves of PTCL staff between and within the main physical chemistry building, thecentral chemistry laboratory, and the new chemistry research laboratories (CRL), openedby the Queen in February 2004, took place very smoothly, a great credit to all involved inthe relocations, especially – within the PTCL – to our lab services unit headed by PaulMitchell. We wish all the ‘movers’ a seamless continuation of their work, and lookforward to PTCL harmony also in the new configuration. Pressure on space in the mainbuilding has now been relieved to some extent, but with the inexorable operation ofParkinson’s Law and the influx and integration of new URF’s, the PTCL is once againquite full. Moves are in hand to convert a part of the library to a new meeting room. Amajor challenge of the coming years will be to upgrade the working research environmentin the PTCL to approach the state-of-the-art conditions available in the CRL.
