<strong>Maintaining</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commitment <strong>to</strong> ExcellenceIntegrating EH&S In<strong>to</strong> The Way We Work at Con EdisonWorking Toge<strong>the</strong>rCon Edison has established a corporate platform of <strong>con</strong>duct that frames a set ofguidelines <strong>to</strong> help all employees work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r effectively, sustain <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>pany’s<strong><strong>com</strong>mitment</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment, and work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> provide cus<strong>to</strong>mers with safe,reliable delivery of energy services. This effort is titled The Way We Work. Its six coreprinciples are:• Plan <strong>the</strong> work and work <strong>the</strong> plan• Seek and accept responsibility• Communicate openly• Work in teams• Improve <strong>con</strong>tinuously• Celebrate successAs mentioned in <strong>the</strong> executive letter, <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>pany has defined one of its six key objectivesas “Integrating EH&S in<strong>to</strong> The Way We Work.” One <strong>con</strong>sequence is that all employeesare held accountable for knowing <strong>the</strong> corporate environmental, health, and safety requirementsthat apply <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir assigned responsibilities, and for using <strong>the</strong> information in planningand <strong>com</strong>pleting <strong>the</strong>ir work. Con Edison employees are strongly <strong>com</strong>mitted <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>com</strong>pany’s EH&S mission, and <strong>the</strong>y strive <strong>to</strong> work safely and protect <strong>the</strong> environment.Contrac<strong>to</strong>rs who perform work for <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>pany are also given training, including guidancein preparing a Health and Safety Plan (HASP), which must be provided before workbegins. The <strong>com</strong>pany uses a formal Contrac<strong>to</strong>r Oversight Program <strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r <strong>con</strong>trac<strong>to</strong>rsafety performance.An important provision of <strong>the</strong> The Way We Work is <strong>the</strong> practice of celebrating success.Awards for EH&S achievement are presented at three levels: First-level awards recognizenotable performance, and are given as warranted throughout <strong>the</strong> year; se<strong>con</strong>d-levelawards are presented for significant EH&S achievement throughout <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>pany. Thirdlevelawards represent <strong>the</strong> highest honor <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>pany presents for outstanding <strong>con</strong>tributions<strong>to</strong> our environmental, health, and safety effort by employees, working as individualsor in teams. Since 1996, 730 people have been presented with third-level awards. For2005, Con Edison recognized 69 employees at <strong>the</strong> <strong>com</strong>pany’s tenth annual EH&S AwardsBreakfast. Their <strong>con</strong>tributions ranged from innovative technical solutions <strong>to</strong> operationalchallenges, <strong>to</strong> effective implementation of environmental programs, <strong>to</strong> personal <strong><strong>com</strong>mitment</strong><strong>to</strong> safety on <strong>the</strong> job, and <strong>to</strong> making a positive environmental impact on behalf of <strong>the</strong><strong>com</strong>munities we serve.In addition, for <strong>the</strong> first time, a new “Circle of Excellence” award was presented <strong>to</strong> a groupof employees who distinguished <strong>the</strong>mselves by having earned a minimum of three thirdlevelEH&S Excellence Awards over <strong>the</strong> past decade.Environment, Health and Safety Annual Report 29
