Three credits.SPAN 300 Advanced GrammarThis is an advanced grammar course for students who have demonstrated competency through the fourthsemester of university instruction. The course will strengthen the student’s understanding and mastery of thestructure of the language and serve as preparation for upper level Spanish classes. Prerequisite: SPAN 202 orequivalent placement test score. Three credits.SPAN 301 Spanish ConversationDevelopment of oral expression and fluency with emphasis on expansion of vocabulary and attention togrammatical correctness. As such, it covers the major literary genres in U.S. Latino/a literature: the essay, epic poetry, lyricpoetry, the short story, novel and drama, as well as folk literature. Three credits.SPAN 316 The Southern ConeTopics dealing with the geography, history, and culture of the countries of South America’s Southern Cone:Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay. There will be an overview of the art, literature (prose and poetry) and film.Prerequisite: SPAN 301 or SPAN 302. Three credits.SPAN 317 Andean Literature and CultureThis is a survey course that explores the diverse literary, artistic and cultural traditions of countries from theAndean region, specifically Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. Texts include both primary and secondary sources: shortstories, essays and novels from the 19th century to present, in addition to journalistic articles and full-length films.All readings, assignments and class discussion are conducted in Spanish.
