UtopiaLim Shengen, Void: Utopia. Image courtesy of artist.attempts to allow the viewer to be engulfed in the experience of the photographic installation by walkingthrough and getting in contact with an environment made up of projected still images onto smoke. The artificial environment created by overhead projectors seeks to question the nature of photography,a question based on the meaning of the word, in which ‘photo’ means light and ‘graph’ means todraw. The work therefore aims to expand the boundaries of traditional camera and print. Utopiaattempts to educate on the understanding and acceptance of photography as something that canexist outside the boundaries of the camera or print. Recent AcquisitionsShaggyby Mella JaarsmaMella Jaarsma, Shaggy, 2008, installation with hair and hair curlers,Singapore Art Museum collectionMella Jaarsma’s artistic practice challenges any simplistic categorisation, as reflected in her ownbackground. Her Dutch upbringing and her decision to work in the historical city of Yogyakarta formore than twenty years places her in a unique situation - an insider/outsider - slipping in and out ofthe tensions of her environment. The co-founder of Indonesia’s foremost contemporary art institution Cemeti Art House, Mella is bestknown for her costume installations which use various materials such as animal skins, horns and evenmilitary clothing - items charged with metaphoric potencies of race, identity, human nature, sexuality, beliefs, politics and origins. In her work Shaggy, Mella takes on the symbol of women’s hair - and all its attendant associationswith eroticism, gender stereotypes and identity. While this piece originated as the artist’scommentary on how contemporary obsession with image and conformity with fashion ‘trends’result in a loss of individuality and a dehumanising sameness, it also makes a powerful statementabout the Indonesian woman’s obsession with hair (and by extension, the universal vanity of womenand their anxiety to preserve their beauty), transforming something conventionally ‘feminine’ andalluring into monstrous proportions.35

Neo-Camouflageby Vibha GalhotraNeo-Camouflage is one of the key works by Indian artist Vibha Galhotra. The artwork confronts itsviewer with pertinent urban issues such as destructiveness, overcrowding, pollution and psychologicaldistress. It depicts how the artificial environment has become an almost uncontrollable phenomenon, overflowing and intruding public and personal spaces. Neo-Camouflage maps out a representation ofthis intrusion of the urban landscape and suggests that man is easily lost within his own environmentof today. Galhotra also imagines the need to reinvent and borrow the idea of the military fatigue(camouflage uniform) for civilian use as if it is needed to blend in and battle with our concrete-ladensurroundings. Galhotra’s art has been described to expound the ‘brutal force of urbanisation’.This discussion on urbanisation and its effects is a subject often conjured by artists from Asia andSoutheast Asia, particularly those surrounded by third world conditions.Vibha Galhoutra, Neo-Camouflage, 2006, digital print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, 55.9 × 147 cm, edition 3 of 4, Singapore Art Museum collection36

Ella Amo’ Apasionadamente y Fue Correspondida(For She Loved Fiercely, And She is Well Loved),by Geraldine JavierInitially trained as a nurse, Filipino artistGeraldine Javier brings a methodicalapproach to her paintings, which areoften characterised by a sombre, melancholic air and mesmerisingbeauty. Her works reveal afascination with beauty and death, and life’s transient beauty is exploredin this painting which contains tenframed cushions embroidered withflowers or caterpillars, each holdinga preserved butterfly. The central subject of Ella Amo’Apasionadamente ostensibly depictsthe famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who produced over 50 self-portraitsthat captured and dramatised thesevere physical and emotionalpain she endured in life - personaltraumas played out on canvas beforea ‘voyeuristic’ art public.
