The kids immediatelyjumped into severalprojects, and betweenthe two, they brought homeabout 35 ribbons from lastyear’s Youth Fair, and eachhad an animal in the sale.“This year they’re going topick only their favorite projectsto enter in the fair,” saidtheir grandmother, MarilynCross.Still, fair-goers are likelysee this brother-sister teamdashing between the barnsand the Women’s Building.Their “shortened” entry listincludes a cake, pies, cookies,an assortment of crafts anda menagerie of animals: heifers,Rosebud and Princess;and goats Snickers, Rusty,Josie, Kit Kat, Rio and Foxy.Michaela is also in thequeen’s contest, and bothwill participate in the clothingcompetition.Throughout the year, theyalso enter other stock showsand contests. 6 ALL AROUND WISE, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, March 18, 2010Continued from page 2Michaela was baking whitechocolate chip cranberry oatmealcookies, and Christianwas finishing a banana puddingcake.Christian admits to sometimeswinging it in thekitchen and baking withouta recipe.“I remember trying to doone on my own without arecipe – chocolate cake,” hesaid. “But it turned out likerubber.”He still likes to try hishand at cakes and even wonfourth place at the Youth Fairlast year with “Christian’s DrPepper and Apple Cake.”Michaela likes to eat cake, but she leaves the baking toher brother.“I hate making cakes;they’re a pain in the butt,”she said. “The only cake I canget right-side up is an upsidedown cake.”She prefers cooking to baking. The duo teams up occasionallyfor events like theFood Challenge, a relativelynew competition, much likethe Food Network’s “IronChef,” and not related to theYouth Fair.Teams are given pre-deerminedamounts of ingreients, but no recipe. Within0 minutes, they must createdish and prepare informaionabout the nutrient valesand serving size.In 2009, they teamed upith fellow 4-Her’s Clay andmily Egle. Marilyn shooker head and laughed recallngwhen they came out ofhe competition.“They came out and said itwasn’t challenging enougho we made our own chalenge,’”said Marilyn. “Weere like … what did youo?”While preparing the dish,he serving bowl was broen,so the team of four hado make an alternate plan.hey ended up using a largeowl to serve a small salada lesson in problem solvng, even if they did lose aew points.Christian and Michaelaren’t afraid of a challengend in fact, they seek it. Theamily regularly visits TanyLeather Factory in Fortorth to purchase leatheror various projects, and it’secome an art that particuarlyinterests Christian.Best WishesYouth FairParticipants! We areproud ofyou!YOUTH FAIR PREVIEWRewarding experience ...Messenger photos by Joe DutyIMMERSED IN 4-H — Christian and Michaela Cross of Alvordjoined 4-H in 2008, but they are already involved in numerousprojects and have taken on leadership roles within the Chico4-H Club and other specialty clubs within the county. Below, the brother-sister team brought home several ribbons andtrophies from the Chico Project Show. They will be enteringmany of the same items in next week’s Youth Fair.Marilyn said on one visithe was admiring the saddles, and he wanted to make onefor his first project. Marilynlaughed and told him itwould be best to start withsomething smaller.Last year he made a leatherwestern belt with rhinestonesfor Michaela and wonfirst place at the Youth Fair— an accomplishment ofwhich he’s proud, and rightfullyso.Their lists of activities andawards fill numerous pages, and although they’ve wonmore accolades in two yearsthan some 4-Her’s do in theirentire career, Christian andMichaela’s favorite part of4-H has been the opportunityit provides to serve theircommunity.SECURITYASSURED“My favorite part is thecommunity service becauseyou’re giving back and notworried about rewards,” saidMichaela.Christian said 4-H hashelped him become a bettercitizen.“I’ve learned things I cando to better my community, and it’s helped me be responsible,”he said. They have volunteeredat Sonflower Camp and FlyWithout Wings equine center. They have also donateditems to the Hope Chest inBridgeport, decorated theChico Square for Christmas, rang the bell for SalvationArmy and cleaned the roadsidethrough the Adopt-a-Highway program, amongcountless other things. The kids are membersof Pleasant View BaptistChurch and participate incommunity service projectswith the youth group, too.Michaela and Christian remembergoing to a homelessshelter in Wichita Falls assmall children where theirfamily helped sort meals, and they gave away gloves tothe people staying there.Marilyn said on one suchtrip, Michaela took off herbrand new coat and gave itto another little girl at theshelter.“I hope you’re not madat me,” Michaela told hergrandmother.Marilyn said she told her,“Oh, no; of course, not. We’llbuy another coat for you.”Actions such as this seemsecond nature to Michaelaand Christian, and 4-H hasjust presented them withmore opportunities to servetheir community and fellowcitizens.Even though their heartsare in community service, the competitive edge stillcomes out in contests likethose at the Youth Fair, andthe slightest of sibling rivalriesrears its head. They wish each other well, but still hold out hope theirown project wins.Michaela said sincerely,“Hope you do well.”And with a laugh, “Hope Ido better.”!E-mail Kristen at ktribe@wcmessenger.com.MOBILE DOCUMENT DESTRUCTION, INC.Your local, dependable & secure document shredding service. We also shred your old CDs, DVDs and hard drives for your security concerns.Call now to arrange an appointment with one of our representatives at your placeof business.940-62SHRED (940-627-4733)We recycle all shredded paper • HIPAA & FACTA Qualifi ed206248Eugene Pak, M.D., P.A.Neurology/ P ain Management PracticeSpecializing in:Adult a nd Child Neurology, EEG & EMG , Epilepsy, Stroke,Parkinson s, MS, Nerve Blocks, Neuropathy andPain ManagementFormer Teaching Faculty at Columbia UniversityResidency Training at Yale University School of MedicineDiplomate American Board of Neurology and PsychiatryNow Accepting New PatientsWichita Falls • Vernon • Decatur • Bowie • GrahamFor an appointment call: (940) 322-1075WISEOver 40 Vehicles in Stock!‘05 Ford FocusAuto, 58K, White..................................... $ 190 *Great Gas Mileage‘06 Chevy Cobalt$Auto, Dark Blue.......................................... 171 *‘02 Lincoln NavigatorLeather, Loaded, Black............................. $ 212 *LoadedWISEW *All payments bi-weekly with $2,000 Down“Limited Warranty Plan” on contacts up to 24 months.(Some limitations apply. Broadleafedeedkillers, labelled also forandelions, clover, poisonvy and dichondra, will killny non-grass. Applied acordingto label directions, hey will do no harm to theawn or to near-by trees andhrubs.Dear Neil: We have aovely, large holly tree thathas lots of yellow leaves injust the last couple of weeks. It’s never happened before. Can you help us? We don’twant to lose it.That’s absolutely normalfor hollies and any otherbroadleafed evergreens.Magnolias, gardenias, ligustrumsand live oaks areall notorious for droppingtheir prior season’s leavesin a hurry at some point inthe spring. It is definitelyno cause for concern. It mayjust be more sudden anddramatic this year than others.Dear Neil: Why do myroses turn brown and notopen properly? That’s thrips. Look insideone of the buds just as itstops developing. You’ll probablysee tiny, sliver-shapedinsects where the petals attach. Those are the thrips, and they’ll turn roses brownand dried. They’ll also causewhite flowers to have rosecoloredspeckling. They’ll attack lots of kindsof plants. In daylilies, forexample, they’ll cause lightfreckles in red flowers. Controlthem with a systemicinsecticide spray.Dear Neil: How can I getrid of the little black gnatsthat come out of my potplants when I water? Those are fungus gnats, and they’re living in the algaeon top of your pottingsoil. They’re hard to controlstrictly with chemicalsprays. Cut back just a biton your watering, since thealgae indicate that the soilis remaining too wet. It is agood idea to wait at least six months after the birth of a childbefore getting pregnant again. In fact, it may be best to waitclose to a year. The reason for this recommended spacingbetween pregnancies rests with the fact that an interval betweenpregnancies of less than six months has been found to increasethe chances of premature birth, birth defects, low birth weight, and even infant death when compared to pregnancies that arespaced at least eleven months apart. At our practice, our primary goal is to provide medical carethat combines expert technology with warm, personal attentionto the concerns of women and their families. PMPIZZA HUT601 601 S. S. WASHBURNDECATUR, TX 76234Birds andBeyondAnimals communicatethrough song. The singeris sending a message to avariety of listeners – othermales, females and even potentialpredators.A frog may want its fellowfrogs to hear its boomingvoice, but predators can hearit, too. A colorful, singingbird is advertising its vigor, but sitting still and makingnoise on a conspicuous perchmakes it more vulnerable topredators. Thus, all communicationscan be hijacked.Indeed, when we look fora bird after hearing it sing,we are effectually hijackingits message for another purpose. The bird isn’t singingfor our benefit, but we takeadvantage of the sound toget a good look at the beautifulcardinal or bouncingwren. Predators just take ita step further and eat it.So, to avoid being eaten, acreature could just stop singing, but it has a message forpotential rivals and mates.A distinctive song signals toa female that the singer is amember of its own species. It would be a waste of energyfor a female cardinal totrack down a singing wren,so cardinals that can recognizetheir own song willleave more offspring. Thoseoffspring will likely inheritthe parents’ ability to learntheir own species’ song.Likewise, thereis no point in amale wren attackinga male cardinalin its territory;they aren’t competingfor similarfoods or for thesame females.Different animalsuse cuesto decide if thesinger might be aworthwhile mate.In frogs, for example, the pitch of the songdepends on body size. A biggerfrog can have a lowerpitchedsong due to thephysics of sound production. If a female prefers a largermate (perhaps because heroffspring would be biggerand those offspring mightdo better battling for potentialmates in the future),then she can make a choicejust by listening to the variousmales at a pond.Different birds may prefersongs that are more varied, more similar to the onesthey grew up learning orthat are sung for longer periodsof time.Although we’re waitingfor the first green sprouts ofspring and associate singingbirds with that time, theyactually begin their breedingseasons based on daylightcues. So, after a certaintime of year, birds may singwhenever the daily conditionsare good (a warm orsunny day).Getting started singingearlier than other membersof their species may snagthem a good territory andpartner earlier than theneighbors. In fact, in juncos(a winter bird speciesMONDAY MARCH 22 222:30 P.M. P MPIZZA HUT601 S. WASHBURNDECATUR, TX 76234here in Texas), males winterfarther north and migratenorth earlier to get choiceterritories. However, if theygo too soon, they may notfind any food. It’s a tradeoffbetween getting a headstart on reproduction versusfinding food.Likewise for frogs, breedingearly may give a headstart (the tadpoles willget bigger before the others, and the frog might getto lay more eggs later, too),but there is the possibilityof a late deep freeze killingyour tadpoles or their foodsources.Frogs typically start singingbased on how wet it isand how warm it is, so theyare particularly vulnerableto unusual weather. A warm, wet period followed by a latefreeze could cause more ofthem to breed too early. Thus, all aspects of singinghave some trade-offsinvolved. Sing too much ortoo conspicuously and youmay get eaten. Don’t sing, and you won’t find a mate.Start singing and breedingtoo early and you might notfind enough food for your babies, but start too late andyou won’t even get a goodterritory or leave as manyyoung’uns behind. These opposing pressurescontribute to the ultimatereasons why the birds andfrogs are singing now, andnot a few months earlier orlater. Variation in the geneticbasis for these timingsand traits means that mostindividuals will start at the“best” time, but a few willstart earlier or later. What kind of creatureswill you find outside rightnow?
