Strains are named according to a twoletter.four-digit code. Accessions from UCL have5 as the second digit (e.g., PI 0501, FI 1501 etc.).The current code is <strong>IRRI</strong>'s origin code, withthe addition of the two-letter species identifierprefix and leading zeros to make a four-digitnumber.Table 5 presents <strong>IRRI</strong>'s codification ofaccesions.Strains of A. japonica, previously consideredas belonging to A. rubra (RU 6003-RU 6009), havebeen identifiedas A. filiculoides and transferred tothe 1000 series.Anabaena cells always originate from thefemale parent. Hence the accession numbers ofhybrids are based on the female parent. Forexample, hybrid MI 4028 ( A. microphylla ×A. filiculoides ) is grouped under A. microphylla.7
