Boca Raton’s parks and recreation facilities 

are included in a total of over 105,000 

public parks and recreation areas in the 

united States which provide vital services 

related to health, physical fitness, nutrition, 

economic development and conservation for 

millions upon millions of people. Although 

communities may be experiencing some of the hardest of economic, social, 

and environmental times, parks and recreation remain essential to our 

healthy existence. 

Boca Raton’s Recreation Services, too, is committed to enhancing the 

quality of life for its citizens, both young and old, through its many facilities 

and programs. Make it a new year pledge to search out and experience 

one of the many programs offered by the Recreation Services Department

School Board, has developed community schools to serve the residents 

of the Greater Boca Raton area. The Community Schools offer a wide 

variety of indoor and outdoor leisure programs for all age groups. Meeting

lessons, which is the main reason even talented singers fail to move listeners.

DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES 

PUPPY KINDERGARTEN 

For all puppies 10 weeks up to 5 months. Learn the basics of how to raise 

a well-behaved dog. Learn how to housebreak, discourage play biting, 

chewing and leash pulling using gentle methods. Training is indoors with 

playtime for socialization. MUST show PROOF of VACCINATIONS

Open play schedule for basketball and volleyball will be posted on

be charged $5.00 for Open Play. The weekly open play schedule can be

The Sugar Sand Park Field House will not be conducting activities from 

Thursday, Sep 1 through Monday, Sep 5, due to the resurfacing of the

Spring into FuN and Edventure with the CSE during this week-long 

camp. We’ll investigate topics from the tiniest organisms to the 

ever-expanding galaxy. Each day we’ll visit the playground and explore 

other areas of Sugar Sand Park! All activities and experiments

RECREATIONAL SWIM TEAM (MANTAS) 

• Mandatory parent meeting!!!! A Mandatory “kick off” parent meeting 

will be held at Sugar Sand Park Theater on April 3, 2012 from 7:00 

pm – 8:30 pm. Please only send one parent or guardian per family. 

Registration is on a first-come first-serve basis within the following parameters: 

• Resident registration: March 1st thru March 31st. Registration fee is 

$150. A separate check made out to Boca Mantas in the amount of $10 per 

swimmer. (This helps covers home meets and the awards banquet). 

• Non-Resident registration: April 1st thru April 30th. Registration fee is 

$187.50. A separate check made out to Boca Mantas in the amount of $10 

per swimmer. (This helps covers home meets and the awards banquet). 

• Registration and tryouts times are Tuesdays – Fridays, 10am - 6:30pm. 

Mondays and Saturdays 10am – 5:30 pm and Sunday’s noon – 5:30pm. 

• When its avail. the 2012 Swimmer Application and the Mantas Information 

Booklet will be available on the city website @ https://webtrac. 

ci.boca-raton.fl.us. Please fill out one Swimmer Application per child, and 

print clear enough to be read. Bring the Swimmer Application(s) in during 

the registration period. 

• For returning Mantas, a swim test is not required, but the child must still 

be registered during the dates listed above. This registration may be done

• For children new to Mantas, a swim test must be taken. All participants 

must swim one length of freestyle breathing to the side. Arms must come 

out of the water while performing the swim test. No doggie paddle will be 

allowed. The child must be comfortable in the water. The child must not 

stop until the length is finished. 

• The swim team is for children ages 5 to 18. The age of the child is determined 

by how old the child is as of May 2, 2012.

receive an award after each weekly game. HIGH 5 is played on 

Sunday afternoons at the Sugar Sand Park Field House.

Level 3 – Stroke Development (ages 6 and up) 

• Class size is limited to 6 students, and is for children comfortable with 

Level 2 skills. 

• Front crawl, back stroke, breathing to the side, and treading water are

• Scissor, butterfly, and breaststroke kicks, are introduced. Elementary 

backstroke is introduced. 

Level 4 – Stroke Improvement (ages 6 and up)

Be advised that this dog park is an unsupervised recreational area of the City of Boca Raton’s Recreation Services Department. 

The use of the dog park is at your own risk. 

Dog owners are responsible for, and liable with respect to, the actions of their dogs and any damage or injury to person or property caused by same. 

Dogs and/or their owners who violate these rules are subject to removal from the park and possible suspension of the right to utilize the park. The City 

of Boca Raton reserves the right to refuse entry to dogs and/or their owners into Mizner Bark for the reasons of health, safety, and prior offenses or for the 

comfort of all patrons and/or their pets. 

Patrons of the park who engage in activities (i.e., playing ball, using remote controlled toys, etc.) not related to the dog park’s purpose or who violate any 

other guideline are liable for any damage or injury to persons, dogs, or property 

GUIDELINES FOR USE 

• Be polite. Scoop up the poop! Bag stations and trashcans are available throughout the dog park. 

• Remain in the dog park and in full view of your dog at all times. 

• Leash your dog prior to entering and upon leaving the dog park. 

• Aggressive behavior must be addressed immediately. Either move your dog to another part of the park or leave the park. 

• For safety reasons, children must be at least 4 feet tall and supervised by an adult to use the dog park. Children must behave in a 

responsible manner: no running, chasing dogs, or petting dogs without the owner’s permission. 

• No more than two dogs per person on any one visit. 

• Dog toys, leashes, etc. left in the park will be disposed of at the end of the day. The City accepts no responsibility or liability for such 

items. 

• Female dogs in heat or sick dogs cannot be brought into the park. 

• Dogs should be under voice control (i.e., come when called). 

• Dogs must be vaccinated and display current licenses on their collars. 

• Puppies under four (4) months of age are prohibited. 

• Spayed/neutered animals are recommended. 

• No food, treats, alcoholic beverages (soft drinks and water are allowed), strollers, bicycles, or children’s toys are allowed in the dog 

park. This is a recreation park for dogs accompanied by their owners.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a distinctive part of the City’s parks system. 

The Center is surrounded by a rare remnant of coastal hammock, 

located on Boca Raton’s barrier island. A boardwalk provides access to this 

unique tropical forest where, from the 40-foot observation tower, you can 

view gumbo limbo trees, migrating birds, Indian middens, the ocean, and 

the Intracoastal Waterway. The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility provides 

treatment and care for sick and injured sea turtles. An informal garden 

attracts butterflies throughout the year. Indoor displays feature wildlife 

indigenous to South Florida and a panorama of stained glass windows depicting 

the coastal island as it may have appeared in the 1500’s. Florida 

Atlantic university maintains an onsite marine biology research laboratory 

with a gallery above the lab allowing visitors to see projects conducted 

by university scientists. Visit the Gift Shop for educational and fun nature 

books, toys, puzzles, t-shirts, jewelry and much more. Please note our 

Outdoor Sea Tanks are currently under construction. Brand-new tanks are 

coming in early 2012!

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS 

Man-of-War 

What is it? Man-of-War are most prevalent during the months 

of November through April. When the Man-of-War present a 

hazard to the public, the blue pennant flag will be flying from the 

lifeguard towers. Man-of-War on the beach are also dangerous and 

capable of stinging; therefore, they should be avoided. 

Symptoms: Extreme pain from the Man-of-War sting usually lasts 

from 1-3 hours. Serious symptoms from a sting could be any combination 

of the following: tightness in the chest, respiratory difficulty, 

stomach cramps, vomiting, allergic reaction or severe pain. 

Those who suffer any of these symptoms should seek immediate 

medical attention. 

Treatment: Any Man-of-War sting should be treated by an ocean 

lifeguard, who will apply a solution to the affected area. It is very 

important that the victim use the callous portion of the fingertips 

to peel off tentacles. Do not rub the affected area.

Vehicles entering Silver Palm Park towing a watercraft trailer are required to obtain a BOAT LAuNCH and RECOVERY PERMIT or a ONE DAY 

VISITOR PERMIT. Permits are valid for a one year period (October 1 through September 30) and are not prorated. un-permitted vehicles with 

watercraft trailers are subject to a $25 fine and towing at owner’s expenses. 

Permits may be purchased at Boca Raton Community Center, James A. Rutherford Community Center, Sugar Sand Community Center. (See Beach Permit 

Information on page 47 for hours and location.) Permits are not transferable and must be permanently affixed to the bottom left front of the interior 

windshield glass ofthe vehicle in order to be admitted into the park. Any transfer of the permit will result in revocation. Vehicles without permits properly 

affixed to the windshield glass will not be allowed to enter the park until permits are properly affixed. Permit CANNOT be taped to windshield glass 

or placed on paper or transparencies. 

A ONE-DAY visit will require the boater to obtain a daily permit at one of the above locations prior to launching water-craft. Daily permits must be hung 

on rear-view mirror, visible for review. A ONE-DAY visitor permit expires 24 hours after issuance.
