SPOTLIGHT ALUMSMary Schweitzer Bauer ’47It was 1943, during World War II, whenI entered the newly established NursingSchool at D’Youville <strong>College</strong> in Buffalo,N.Y. There were seven of us young ladies,known as Mother D’Youville’s Women inWhite–the MDWW Club. After 66 years,we Women in White still have annualreunions. As the war waged on, it was myintention to become a member of the U.S.Army Nurse Corps and to serve overseas.After four years, in 1947, the war wasover. I graduated with a BSRN degreeand stayed in Buffalo doing publichealth nursing with the VisitingNurses Association.In 1948, I married Dr. CharlesBauer and we moved to Hot <strong>Spring</strong>s,Ark. for two years. Captain CharlesBauer was doing active duty as a General Hospital there. I worked at alocal hospital in the obstetrical labor anddelivery rooms.giving. I personally appreciate how my D’Youvilleexperience has given me the opportunity to succeed inlife. We have encouraged the value of education in our have been fortunate to be able to present scholarships toassistance to complete their studies. We are pleased at thegood results!We have helped D’Youville by furnishing the PharmacyFaculty Research Laboratory which is now functional.Many DYC/SOP have embarked upon initiating theirindividual or collaborative laboratory-based researchprojects. We have furnished two physical therapylaboratories with the needed improvements to function asstate-of-the-art environments.Through the years, our family foundation has contributed tomany charitable organizations and educational institutionsthroughout the United States. All our grandchildren areinvited to our annual meetings and are inspired to continuethis work in the future.This is our legacy.After that two year honeymoon, we returned to Buffalo and hospitals and nursing homes. We took time off each year to travelwith the children and sometimes without them. We have beento all the 50 states, and have toured almost every corner of theearth, New Zealand, Tahiti, Russia, China, Hong Kong, Mexico,Central America, and Bermuda; the Caribbean Islands are amongour favorites. children have married (that makes 10 children). We have 15grandchildren – four have married (making 19 grand kids). Twomore are being married this year. Who knows where this willend!We have stressed the importance of education and charitable28
