Preliminary laboratory resultsfrom a U.S. Fish and WildlifeService analysis of crappie fromStonewall Jackson Lake indicatethat the recent fish kill is the resultof a heavy columnaris infectionfound in the fish, accordingto Bret Preston, Assistant Chief ofthe West Virginia Division of NaturalResources’ Wildlife ResourcesSection.“While we are awaiting final reportsfrom the U.S. Fish and WildlifeService Northeast Fish HealthCenter in Lamar, Pa., initial findingssuggest that the fish died froma bacterial infection,” said Preston.Columnaris bacteria are commonlyfound in water and generally donot cause problems in fish. Fishhealth can be affected by a numberof environmental conditions. Individually, these conditions usuallydo not pose problems for fish, buta combination of conditions maycause enough stress to allow a diseaseto spread rapidly through apopulation.DNR fisheries management staffare cooperating with the West VirginiaDepartment of EnvironmentalProtection and the U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers to review waterquality data to determine if conditionssuch as water temperature ordissolved oxygen could be associatedwith the fish kill involvingmore than 1,000 fish, mostly crappie.“Columnaris outbreaks and fishkills in other areas of the countryhave been linked to unusually highor rapidly changing water temperaturesor low dissolved oxygenlevels,” said DNR District 3Fisheries Biologist Kevin Yokum, who is investigating the fish kill atStonewall Jackson Lake. “We arelooking at the possibility that highwater temperatures and earlier thanusual stratification of the lake mayhave coincided with the spawningperiod of crappie in the lake. Theadded stress during spawning mayhave affected crappie and madethem vulnerable to a columnarisinfection.”Bryan Summers landed this 32pound catfish. Preliminary figures indicate WestVirginia hunters harvested 10,006bearded turkeys statewide duringthe recently completed 2010 springgobbler season. This year’s springharvest is approximately two percentabove the 9,787 birds taken in2009. It is the first time the springharvest exceeded 10,000 since2006.The top five counties in 2010 wereMason (536), Marshall (316), Putnam(315), Lincoln (278), and Harrison(269). Four of the state’s districtshad slight declines; however, two districts showed an increase inharvest from last year. Harvests inthe western and southwestern portionsof the state were higher in2010. District 5 showed the greatestpercentage increase (35), whileDistrict 2 had the largest decreaseat 12 percent.“Our biologists predicted a verysimilar kill in 2010 based on broodreports,” said Curtis I. Taylor, Chiefof the Wildlife Resources Sectionof the West Virginia Divisionof Natural Resources. “Normalweather conditions across much ofthe spring season enabled hunters2010 Spring Turkey Harvestto have plenty of time afield. In addition,a good carryover of maturetoms provided many mornings ofrecreation for Mountain State hunters.”Biologists had forecast a springharvest of approximately 10,000gobblers for 2010 based on pastdata. Topwater Baits For BassTopwaters are among the mostexciting baits you can fish for bass.Besides, topwaters are often veryproductive and can sometimes outfishother techniques. In general, topwaters are most effective inwarm to cool water, while slower, deeper baits such as jigs and wormsare more effective in extremelycold and extremely hot water. Ifthe water temperature is above 55degrees, a topwater should be thefirst thing you throw in the morning.Topwaters are most effectivein the early morning, late eveningand during the calm before an approachingstorm.Poppers attract bass with agurgling and popping sound on theRoger Bragg hooked a trout. Poppers should beretrieved in a series of starts andstops.StickBaits have no action oftheir own and require the fisherman’sskill to make them performmaneuvers such as “walking thedog.” These baits work well inopen water, and around boat docks, tree lines, stump rows, etc.Buzzbaits are similar to spinnerbaitsbut are designed to befished on top. Fish them rightacross logjams, submerged weeds, sparse grass, etc.Propbaits create a disturbancewhen jerked slightly. They workbest when the water temperatureis above 60 degrees. Work close tocover on heavy tackle or off longpoints on drop-offs on lighter tackle.JerkBaits Use jerkbaits anytimethe water temperature is above55 degrees. When & Where to Fish TopwatersIn general, topwaters tend to workbest in the late spring (just after thespawn), summer and fall. In hotweather, topwaters will produce onschooling bass; in dense cover, fisha buzzbait right over the heads ofATV’sMotorcyclesRt. 33 EastBuckhannon, WV304-472-4824www.supersmittys.combass. Topwaters are excellent baitsfor fishing big, open water as wellas shallow shorelines. For example,if there is a drop-off from 15 to25 feet, a topwater will often drawstrikes from bass that are suspendingthere, especially in clear water.Long, tapering points are greatplaces to try topwaters. Move to theend of the point and cast the areawhere the point falls off into deepwater with a big topwater such as astick bait. In extremely clear waterwith little structure, a silver, white,or gold minnow lure twitched quietlyon the surface will often produceexplosive strikes. Fish topwatersquickly in rivers and aroundextremely heavy cover. A buzzbaitis ideal for these situations. Theidea is to fish the lure fast over theheads of bass, provoking a reactionstrike. But the colorshould more closely match thanof baitfish that bottom-dwellingcreatures. Therefore, a silver topwaterwould tend to be a betterchoice than a brown one. However,at night , use a black topwater, since black is the color that standsout most dramatically against thenight sky to a bass looking upward.Chrome is an excellent choice inmany reservoirs because it matchesthe colors of many baitfish, includingalewives and shad. Sometimesa bright secondary color such asred or orange adds to the productivityof the lure. Smallmouth oftenprefer outrageously colored topwaters, including chartreuse and orange.More about lure colors.TipsAlways have a follow-up bait lurefor missed strikes (such as grubs, gitzits and worms). Sometimes abass will strike at a topwater severaltimes without connecting. Whenthis happens, a plastic worm or jigimmediately cast to the same areawill often hook the fish.Fish most topwaters with a finewirecross-locking snap. Minnowbaits are especially prone to sluggishaction without them.Lightweight wooden topwaters includingminnows should be fishedon light line for greater casting distanceand improved action. Lureswith violent action such as stickbaits should be fished on 12 or 14pound test line, which will providethe right action without tangling inthe lure’s hooks.Sometimes no action is the best action.A simple minnow lure or stickbait allowed to sit still for long periodscan produce a strike. In clear water, use a quieter lure. Aminnow or sick bait is often betterin a deep, clear highland reservoirthan a noisier prop lure. When fishing around dense coverin a shallow lake, remove the treblehook of a popper or chuggerand replace with a single weedlesshook for fewer hang-ups.When fishing topwaters, wait forthe lure to disappear before settingthe hook.Keep one rod equipped with a topwaterlure while fishing. Bluegill are one of thebest tasting freshwater fish and areexcellent additions to any fishfry. The premium time for bluegillfishing is from late spring to earlyautumn. The best tempurature outsidewould be around 70 degrees sothe bluegill will be in shallow waternext to the shore. This makes locatingthe bluegill very easy to locateand fill up your stringer quickly. When the tempurature gets warmer,as it does in most areas in themidwestern US, the bluegill moveto deeper water and are more dif-ficult to find without working withthe ol’ depthfinder.Bluegill Bait and TackleI’ll start with the rod and reel. Let’skeep it simple. For bluegill fishingyou really don’t need a fancy setup.A simple pole and reel combinationthat you can buy at any store willwork well when fising for bluegillor bream. are more enticing to the ‘gills thanothers of course. My favorite livebait when bluegill fishing has to becrickets. I’ve had many instanceswhere a bluegill jumps up and inhalesthe cricket right before it hitsthe water. When I did well in a couplepanfish tournaments using onlycrickets. Live bait rigs are easy tosetup. Just put a bobber or float onyour line about a 18 inches up yourline. Then put on a lightweightsplitshot weight about 2 inches upthe line. After that put your choiceof small hook. Hook your baitthrough the back so it can wriggleand you’re ready to catch those‘gills. My favorite lure to usewould be a simple jig setup. Thehooks come preweighted at thehead for easy use and jigs come ina variety of colors. Bear movementsare tied to food sources. tive way of addressing the problem, especially when faced withthe possibility of merely moving aproblem bear from one area to another. That is why wildlife agenciesaround the country tell peoplethat a “fed bear is a dead bear.”Bear populations have increasedand expanded across the state in thepast 10 years. Bears are now foundin areas where they have been absentfor decades, and have been reportedin all 55 counties. Multiplereports of sows with cubs havebeen received from the northernand western portions of the state.Human/bear interactions increaseduring the spring and summerfor several reasons. Naturalfood sources are at their lowestpoint when bears leave their densin the spring. High-energy foodssuch as serviceberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries donot become available until later inthe summer. In addition, the bearbreeding season, which peaks fromlate June through July, puts manybears on the move. During thebreeding season, males will coverlarge areas while searching for females. This is also the time of yearwhen adult female bears will chaseoff their yearlings so that they maybreed again. Bearswill continue on their way if theydo not find easy food sources.Bears quickly become habituatedto handouts in the form of trash, bird seed and pet food, and losetheir fear of humans. Bears thathave lost their fear of humans resortto raiding garbage, outdoorfreezers, storage sheds, vehiclesand other structures associatedwith people. Unfortunately, whenthese activities are repeated, DNRpersonnel are forced to humanelydestroy the offending animal forsafety reasons.“The unintentional feeding ofblack bears is something that can beprevented,” Carpenter explained.“Garbage needs to be secured in abear-proof facility and placed outfor collection on the morning ofpick-up, not the night before. Four crankbaits wobbling on theends of four long lengths of leadcore are effective at seining thedepths for deep walleyes. That is,until one of the crankbaits snags aleaf, stick or some other assorteddebris. Then it runs sideways. Withthe other lines nearby crisscrossingin the same water depths, it doesn’ttake a fishing genius to know a tangleddisaster is in the making. Timeto crank in that line – all 150 feetof it.Open-water trollers negate manyof the tangling problems with planerboards, of course. Planer boardsserve a variety of other purposes, but keeping lines spread out andunder control while fishing suspendedwalleyes is job one.Chris Newell shot a nice gobbler.Photo courtesy of Reese’s Country Stoe inDeerwalk. It’s A Snap - CrankbaitsDeep-water river trollers (and really, trollers who are using leadcore anywhere) can accomplishthe same purpose by swapping afew of their lead-core rods for setupswith superline and heavy snapweights. This trick is really nothingnew, but it is not commonly seenin conjunction or as a substitute forlead-core trolling.Yet, some pros, such as Pat Neu ofForestville, Wis., and Dan Stier ofMina, S.D., are rapidly learning thebenefits of running the two in tandem,or even abandoning lead corealtogether. Dealing with a tangledmess of lead core, lead lines andcrankbaits, particularly with coldhands during a big-river tournament,is likely to encourage anyoneto search for a better way.“In water that lends itself to usewith lead core, you often have fourlines running alongside one anotherwithin a 25-foot area,” Neu said.“That’s just a recipe for disasterif one of them picks up some debris. So I started looking for rigsthat would still get lures down tothe fish but would spread them outboth horizontally and vertically.“I remembered some tricks webegan using on Lake Michiganwith snap weights and superlinesto get dodgers and flashers down tosalmon in the 40- to 60-foot depthrange. This was about 10 years agowhen the lake began clearing up,and you had to fish deep becausethe salmon were being spooked bythe boats overhead.”Snap-weight rigs can still be usedin conjunction with two lead-corelines, offering similar amounts ofcoverage without all the tanglinghassles. Plus, the weights have theadded benefit of collecting surfacedebris that gathers on the line beforeit can reach the crankbait. is not possible with lead core – yetanother advantage of this systemthat Stier learned from a veteranSouth Dakota angler several yearsago.“He always made fun of lead-coretrollers,” Stier said. “He didn’tuse anything other than snaps forcontour-trolling crankbaits. I’velearned that by using snap weights, you can be in the strike zone longer, adjust quickly by reeling upor releasing line, and land fish orretrieve baits in about a third of thetime that you can with lead core.Plus, because you’re using braidedline, you can see the vibration ofyour crankbait through your rodtip. That’s critical, especially in ariver system where you have a lotof debris – and it’s not always easyto see with lead core. If you pick uptrash and the bait stops wobbling,it’s instantly ineffective.”Ease of use, tangle-free and capableof reaching the depths – youcan’t ask for much more from atrolling system to chase the contoursof deep water.Simple setThe technique is deceptively simpleto fish.“I’ve fished with people this way,and many of them have asked,‘Why haven’t I been doing this allalong?’” Neu said. Some basic crankbait trollingknowledge and the ability to read adepth finder are required. Neu hasfound at 1.8 to 2 mph, the speeds hetypically runs crankbaits, the depthhe wants to hit with his crankbaitswill closely match the length of linefrom the rod to the snap weight, given an 8-ounce weight, 30-footlead, diving crankbait and 14/6 superline.“Basically, you let out 30 feet ofline on your line counter and clipon the weight,” Neu said. “Then, reset your reel and let out anotherlength of line that corresponds tothe depth you’re fishing – 25 feetof line for 25 feet of water, in otherwords.
