Durham is alsohome to the region’s namesake,Research Triangle Park (RTP).Durham began as a Native Americanvillage named Adshusheer on the GreatIndian Trading Path. It was resettled byScots, Irish, and English colonists in the1700’s and named Durham in 1853.During the antebellum period,Durham plantations lay amid some ofthe largest holdings in the South. TheirAfrican slave quarters became thehearth of distinctively Southerncultural traditions. After the Civil War, the Durhamcommunity first attained worldrecognition with “Bull Durham”tobacco and a worldwide trust foundedby the Duke family. At the turn of the century, Durham’sAfrican-American enterprises, including “Black Wall Street,” capturedthe world’s attention, and later still,Durham civil-rights pioneers launchedthe national sit-in movement.Today, Durham is the City ofMedicine, USA, and A COUNTYWITH MERIT (Medicine, Education,Research, Industry, and Technology): itis home to national centers formedicine, health care, diet & fitness, humanities, publishing, sports, art, research, and technology.CharacterDurham is a unique blend of ethnicgroups, cultures, lifestyles, andinterests. As with Baltimore andWashington, Dallas and Fort Worth, orAnaheim and LA, it is rarely feasible touse these cities as one combinedconvention site. The Triangle Region“The Triangle” has many meanings.Often it refers to Durham-basedResearch Triangle Park. Originally, itreferred to the creators of the researchpark: Duke University in Durham, NCState University in Raleigh, and UNCat Chapel Hill. Today, the term is usedto refer to a “family of communities”centered around two metropolitanstatistical areas, one four-county metrocentered around the core city, Durham,NC, and another three-county metrocentered around Raleigh and Cary.North CarolinaNorth Carolina is the “Old NorthState,” a reference that originated withthe division of the Carolinas in 1710. Itwas one of the 13 original Americancolonies, the first to vote forIndependence, and the 12th to ratifythe US Constitution. The state motto isesse quam videri, “to be rather than toseem.” The dogwood is the state flower, the cardinal the state bird, and theemerald the state gem. North Carolinais now home to 8.2 million residents, who are sometimes called “Tar Heels.”This nickname dates to pre-Revolutionary days, when tar, pitch, and turpentine were extracted fromNorth Carolina pine forests for Britishnaval sailors.TaxesMost Durham purchases, includingprepared food and clothing, are taxedat the rate of 7%.
