Shropshire Women and Children’s Services NewsWelcome to the first edition of our newnewsletter about the Women and Children’sServices provided by The Shrewsbury andTelford Hospital NHS Trust. In this newsletter, we bring you news andupdates from all of our services—including theShropshire Women and Children’s Centre whichopened in September at the Princess RoyalHospital in Telford. The centre is the maininpatient facility for Shropshire, Telford &Wrekin and mid Wales. The opening of the centre, on 29 and 30September, went extremely well thanks tocareful planning and the tremendous support ofa whole range of people on the two days andbefore and after the opening. The centre isalready proving busy and popular — during thefirst month after it opened, there were a totalof 328 births, 90 children were assessed on theChildren’s Assessment Unit at PRH, and morethan 330 children had outpatientsappointments in Telford. The new centre provides outstanding facilitieswithin which our staff can continue to provideexcellent care for women and children. Each ofthe wards and units are modern and spaciousand contain excellent facilities for our patientsto benefit from. These include play areas androoms for children, and a greatly improved andlarger environment for babies needing intensivecare than we have been able to offer inShrewsbury. Pregnant women now also havean opportunity, where appropriate, to give birthin a new birth pool which is already popular. We really appreciate the input and support ofpatients, parents, families and other peoplefrom across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin andmid Wales which have helped to shape thisfantastic facility. Thank you also to each of ourstaff who has either been directly or indirectlyaffected by the opening of thecentre for their commitmentand hard work.Cathy Smith, Women andChildren’s Care GroupDirector(continued on page two)Issue 1, November 2014
