OVER 100 YEARS OF EXPERIENCEIt was in the year 1915 that MAN really got its showon the road. The Nuremberg factory began tomanufacture MAN trucks in 1916. Just one yearlater, they created the world’s first large-scale dieselengine, a two-stroke, six-cylinder unit developing12,000 horsepower. MAN then established anotherimportant milestone when it developed direct dieselinjection in 1924 – a sensation at the time. Trucksbegan to roll off the production line again at theNuremberg factory soon after the Second WorldWar, followed quickly by buses. The first Germantruck to feature an exhaust gas turbocharger wason the road by 1951 – another innovation fromMAN’s engineers. When the MAN Group was restructuredin 1955, its factories in Munich andSalzgitter took over the production of vehicles. TheNuremberg factory then focused solely on thedevelopment and production of engines, becomingMAN’s centre of expertise.“PERFORMANCE HAS BEENOUR PASSION SINCERUDOLF DIESEL’S TIME.”➜ It all began with Rudolf Diesel’s discovery. The diesel engine which he developed at MaschinenfabrikAugsburg between 1893 and 1897brought with it a new era of mobility and alsomarked the foundation stone for the MAN Group. In order to capitalise on the opportunities presentedby this new engine technology, MaschinenfabrikAugsburg and Maschinenbau-Actien-GesellschaftNürnberg merged in 1898 toform Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, orMAN for short. The first engine was built thatsame year in Nuremberg, and sold to America.Innovation by the truckloadThis Nuremberg driving force produced a continuousspate of technical innovations: intercooling inturbo engines (1979), the introduction of high-pressureinjection (1987), four-valve technology (1997)and common-rail technology (2004) are among thehighlights. A production record of more than120,000 engines a year demonstrates the competenceand performance of the MAN team. Morethan 4,300 employees in the international centre forengine expertise are currently behind the company’sworld-renowned MAN Power.4 . MAN Engines | History MAN Engines | History . 5

THE FUTURE HAS YET TO BE INVENTEDDevelopment centreIn order to keep building upon its position as atechnology leader in engine construction, and inorder to surmount future challenges even moreefficiently, MAN has extended its developmentfacilities in Nuremberg by opening another newdevelopment centre covering an area of 10,000square metres and incorporating 16 engine testbeds, one vehicle test bed, development laboratoriesand workrooms for 150 highly qualified technicians.On-site ecologySustainability is essential to MAN. The brake energyproduced on the engine test beds is fed backinto the site’s internal electricity network, and theheat generated by the engines is used by absorptioncoolers for cooling purposes. The building’stechnical systems incorporate triple energy recyclingin the form of electricity, heat and refrigeration, making a major contribution to the protectionof resources.Passing with flying coloursThe dynamic engine test beds form the heart of thetest centre and enable our engineers to simulatereal-life driving situations, thus moving test drives offthe roads and onto the test bed. One of the centre’sspecial features is its vehicle test bed with a 640 kWpower rating, on which engine designs can be optimisedin conjunction with the vehicle as a whole toextract maximum efficiency from whole drive trains.Cold tests without dieselJust three minutes to test an engine to the utmost. What is unusual about our innovative cold-test processis that the engine does not have to be startedat all, but instead is pulled by an electric motor. Thissaves a million litres of diesel each year and 3,000tons of CO2 – which is good for the climate, andgood for resources.“PERFORMANCE NEVERRESTS ON IT LAURELS.”➜ The engine developers at MAN have one key objective:while keeping performance the same or improvingit, they aim to reduce consumption, reduce emissionsand protect resources. MAN has always conducted intensiveresearch and development work to play a leadingrole in the ongoing improvement of diesel and gasengine efficiency. Our highly developed Euro 6 technologyfor trucks and buses is yet more proof of this.24 . MAN Engines | Research and development MAN Engines | Research and development . 25
