Harmony
109 Atlantic Avenue
M6H 1X4 | 416-583-5000
Already the recipient of three JUNO Awards and two GOLD Albums, Serena Ryder is
about to unveil her most personal and ambitious album yet. The result is HARMONY
– robust, passionate, optimistic, adventurous, haunting and addictive.
Serena ended up working with two different producers on this album - Emmy/Grammy
nominated producer/songwriter/musician Jerrod Bettis (Gavin Degraw, Better Than
Ezra) and producer/songwriter/musician Jon Levine (K’naan, Nelly Furtado). Serena,
Jerrod and Jon even play most of the instruments on the album. By recording much of
HARMONY at her own home studio The Cottage, the essence of the songs were able
to properly flourish. They also recorded at Guest House Studios in Los Angeles and
Synagogue in Hollywood, before the album was mixed by Joe Zook (Modest Mouse,
Katy Perry).
“HARMONY is my journey...my past, my present, my future and all the ugly and
beautiful things that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing so far in my short life
here,” shares Serena. “I’ve chosen with this record to experiment more freely with
the different musical parts of me that make up the whole.”
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS’ career-defining 1995 double album MELLON COLLIE &
THE INFINITE SADNESS receives the fully remastered treatment for the first time. This
follows last year’s acclaimed reissues (*see quotes below) of the band’s groundbreaking
first two albums, Gish (1991) and Siamese Dream (1993), as well as this past
summer’s Pisces Iscariot (1994), the band’s third album.
Originally released October 24, 1995, MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS
would debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 9x platinum by the
RIAA. It yielded major hits like “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”–the band’s unlikely first
Top 40 hit–the exquisite “1979” and epic “Tonight, Tonight” as well as a thoroughly
inspired series of videos. Produced by BILLY CORGAN, Flood and Alan Moulder, the album
would also earn a Grammy Award (1996 Best Hard Rock Performance for “Bullet
With Butterfly Wings”) as well as seven nominations. Beyond the more obvious hits,
though, MELLON COLLIE is a song cycle of unusual depth and considerable range. It is
a collection of stunningly beautiful moments when everything lined up--a moment in
time that’s still here to be treasured.
MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS is being released in multiple configurations,
including an expanded 5CD+DVD Deluxe Box Set and the remastered original
album in 4LP Vinyl and 2CD.
The Deluxe Box Set’s 5 CDs include 64 bonus tracks of previously unreleased material
or alternate versions of MELLON COLLIE era songs, and its DVD features a live show
filmed at the Brixton Academy, London (1996) and bonus performances from the
German music television show Rockpalast (1996). It all comes housed in a 12 x 12
lift-top box with magnetic closure, reimagined cover art and velvet-lined disc holder.
The package includes 2 books containing personal notes, lyrics, new collage artwork,
plus a Decoupage kit for creating your own scenes from the MELLON COLLIE universe.
The bonus content and special features were curated from the band’s archives by
CORGAN, and have been painstakingly remastered for the first time from the original
master tapes by Bob Ludwig.
“What strikes me now about Mellon Collie is that we were coming off of making
Siamese Dream with Butch Vig--which was a very idealized statement,” CORGAN
tells writer David Wild in the liner notes. “Siamese Dream was very successful and
very much at the forefront of how records are made now with a strong perfectionist
streak. Yet coming off of that success, we went completely in the opposite direction
working with Flood and Alan Moulder. We headed into a much darker, funkier and
more visceral terrain. Revisiting Mellon Collie for this edition, that’s what struck me-
-that we made this kind of dramatic ‘about face”’at a time when most people would
have made an even more expensive idealized statement. We went deep, and we went
for something expansive sounding--not just expensive sounding.”
August Burns Red Sleddin’ Hill, A Holiday Album
August Burns Red will release August Burns Red Presents: Sleddin’ Hill, A Holiday Album on October 9th!
The 13-track release features not only fresh takes on classics such as “Jingle Bells,” “Winter Wonderland” and
even “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer,” but also original compositions that are destined to become future
headbanging holiday favorites. The album also compiles remixed and remastered versions of the band’s previous
holiday hits, like “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Little Drummer Boy.”
Rounding out the collection is an updated version of the band’s rendition of “Carol of the Bells,” heard in Frank
Miller’s (300, Sin City) movie, The Spirit and Seth MacFarlane’s (Family Guy) American Dad. “The idea of doing
a full Christmas album has been floating around in the August Burns Red camp for a few years now, but what
always held us back was finding the time and energy to write an additional full-length in between touring and
writing our regular records,” explains guitarist and principle songwriter JB Brubaker. “After finishing [2011’s]
Leveler I finally felt inspired enough to tackle the Christmas album idea.”
After working with some of the biggest producers in the genre, the band chose to come home and work at
Lancaster’s Atrium Audio with longtime friends Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland on Sleddin’ Hill, which finds
August Burns Red at its most ambitious and creative. It’s a work that enhances the guitar and drum mastery
August Burns Red are known for by adding unexpected elements such as banjo, violin, cello, piano and even horns.
“Because this was such a different type of album, I was able to get a little more wild with my influences,”
confesses Brubaker. “There’s a section inspired by one of my favorite bands, Beirut. There’s also guitar solo that is
an ode to Blue Album-era Weezer, and my punk roots are evident all over the album.”
“Writing metal versions of Christmas songs has always been a challenge for me because the songs are driven by
simple vocal melodies with the only variety in the lyrics. We decided to take the songs and go the instrumental
route - the main melodies are there, but this record has a lot more to it then that,” he adds. “The songs have
sections of music that flow in and out of the classic melodies we’ve all
come to recognize. There is a lot of substance in these songs- more than
you’d find in your typical cover.”
On whether Sleddin’ Hill is destined to become a novelty album or a key
part of the band’s discography, Brubaker has the final word: “To some, the
concept of a metal Christmas album may come off as silly and a waste
of time, but I think this record has plenty of original August Burns Red
substance to interest even the biggest Scrooges out there.”
Underoath Anthology 1999-2013
Underoath will cap its incredible run with the release of a career retrospective album, Anthology 1999-2013
available in stores and online November 6th. With tracks culled from their 1999 debut, Act of Depression,
through the instant classics on 2010’s Ø (Disambiguation), Anthology 1999-2013 is an essential collection of
songs that celebrates the evolution of this seminal band.
Pushing Anthology 1999-2013 beyond a mere retrospective, the release gives fans one last chance to hear
newly recorded material in the form of new tracks “Sunburnt” and “Unsound.” Recorded with longtime
producer Matt Goldman, the two new songs represent the final material recorded by the band.
“Over the past decade or so of our lives, we have been able to live a dream traveling the world, playing music
that excites us, and meeting more amazing people than we could have ever fathomed,” says keyboardist Chris
Dudley. “This couldn’t be a more bittersweet moment for us. We have accomplished more, met more friends,
seen more places and have just done more than we could have ever imagined, and we really wanted to just
go out on the highest note possible. That’s why we have put together a group of great friends and musicians
for what will be our final tour ever. We are taking every moment of this tour as an opportunity to say goodbye
to you all, as well as celebrate what has taken place over all these years. The love we have and the debt of
gratitude that we owe to all of you is not able to be measured in any way.” .
Serena Pryne And The Mandevilles Goodnight Golden Sun
When it comes to music, comparisons are like a compass: they set you in the right direction, but they can’t tell you what you’ll
find there. Serena Pryne’s voice evokes the tortured purity of Janis Joplin, the soulful power of Big Mamma Thornton, and Loretta
Lynn’s absorbing honesty. An impressive group of ‘likes,’ to be sure. But even such praise only gives an inkling of the Canadian
songstress’ abilities. Serena doesn’t just sing; she combusts. As the first note strikes, from her place centre stage Serena explodes
outwards. Her sincerity and energy envelops the crowd, transforming them from passive audience and taking them on a journey
soaked in whisky, sweat, and tears. And when the lights dim and the band exits, the crowd is left cleansed, changed, having
stared straight into the burning heart of rock and roll. With a mix of rock and blues, Serena’s songwriting is as timeless as it is
unforgettable. “For me, the whole point is to be vulnerable, to be in the moment,” says Pryne. “The payoff is playing the songs
live and people getting something of it. To make a connection.”
Serena’s fearlessly earnest lyrics tell of hard miles and broken hearts. She takes from the
miraculous and mundane minutiae of life, crafting relatable narratives that draw the listener
in, thanks in no small part to the dynamics of her voice. One minute soft and lulling and the
next a soaring siren’s cry, her distinct vocals bring these stories to life. Serena is never far from
longtime collaborator, guitarist Nick Lesyk. His edgy, Texas flavoured playing blends perfectly
with Serena’s smoky dulcet tones. “We just clicked right away,“ says Serena. “We both knew
what we wanted to do and how we wanted the songs to sound.“
Can The Lost Tapes (Vinyl)
Spoon Records and Mute are delighted to announce the release of the long awaited 5 LP box set of unreleased
studio, soundtrack and live material from Can. THE LOST TAPES was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel
Miller, and compiled by Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore. When the legendary Can studio
in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum, they bought everything, including the army
mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau. While dismantling the studio,
master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labeling, no one was sure what
was on these until Irmin and Jono started to go through over 30 hours of music. What they found was years of
archived material, not outtakes, but rather tracks which had been shelved for a variety of reasons.
Superdrag
Regretfully Yours
Side One Dummy Records is pleased to announce the vinyl re-issue of Superdrag‘s cult classic Regretfully Yours
on December 11, 2012, marking the first time the album has been made available on vinyl. On Regretfully Yours,
Superdrag combine noisy garage rock with mainstream pop, arriving in a place that owes equally to the Stooges
and Matthew Sweet. Although Regretfully Yours never reached the sales figures of some of their 90’s peers, the
album has been highly regarded by critics as one of the most seminal albums in the power pop genre, with fans
asking for a vinyl release for years.
