FROM THECLUB PRESIDENTJay NovakClub PresidentA Year of VitalityRecent years have made it clear thatthe Minneapolis Club is not immunefrom the challenges of recession orinsulated from the benefits of recovery.Equally clear is that Club members, like everyone else, respond favorablyto improvements in amenities, diningchoices, and entertainments. Those two observations, neither of themprofound, explain expanded levels ofactivity in our Clubhouse in 2011, whenour fellow members ordered moremeals, hosted more banquets, attendedmore programs, and made more visitsto the fitness center than in any yearsince pre-recession 2008. The growth inactivity from 2010 to 2011 was especiallystrong, and most especially in diningand program attendance. The number of a la carte “covers”—individuals ordering a breakfast, lunch,or dinner at either the Grill or the Pub—rose from 38,026 in 2010 to 42,086 lastyear, a gain of 10.7 percent. Thanks inlarge part to the reopening for the newlyremodeled Pub and the hiring of ournew chef, dinner covers rose from 4,396to 6,636, a gain of more than 50 percent.Breakfast covers rose from 8,706 to 9618,lunch covers from 24,924 to 25,832.The Club’s banquet participation alsorose in 2011, from 54,288 covers to56,349. Our total food and beveragesales rose to $2,811,947 for the year, again of more than 8 percent. Additionalstrong gains were made in the firstquarter of 2012.The Club’s 10 key annual events—they include the annual Father-and-Daughter Dance, Valentine’s Gala,Easter and Mother’s day brunches, andThanksgiving and Christmas buffets—drew 1,999 members and guests lastyear, up almost 20 percent from 1,668in 2010. Attendance at the Easter 2011brunch was 415, up from 362 in 2010.Attendance at the pre-Christmas SantaBrunch rose from 82 to 139. Meanwhile, monthly Happy Hours organized bythe Young Members Committee havebeen packed with 50 to 70 membersand guests; the Young Members’ 15-seatMentor Dialogue Series of presentationshave been attended at full capacity, andarts events and luncheon lectures arebetter attended than ever.Visits to the Fitness Center rose from26,094 in 2010 to 28,363 last year. Theincrease might have been much larger, but the expansion and remodeling ofthe Fitness Center—and the additionof our daycare center—was notcompleted until last July. Group exerciseparticipation increased dramaticallyafter the expansion was completed; inthe second half of 2010, attendance ingroup-exercise classes totaled 1,323.In the second half of 2011 it totaled2298, a gain of 74 percent. Yoga-classparticipation more than tripled to 610;Mat Pilates class participation more thandoubled.I will complete my term as Clubpresident on April 30, and I don’t minddisclosing that I’m sorry to have it end.It was an honor to be elected to helpadvance the vitality of an institution thatserves as a town square for business andcivic leaders of the Twin Cities. I value,as I know you do, my associations withour fellow members. The fact that somany of them became so such moreactive in the past year made the yearmuch more fun than I expected.DID YOU KNOW?The Minneapolis Club is ratedas a Platinum Club of Americaby the Club Learers Forum. Thisrating measures the service tomembership, quality of clubfacilities, heritage, and enlightened leadership from Ownership, Management, and Board. This achievement is onlyawarded to 235 clubs out of the 6000 private clubs across the nation; which puts the Minneapolis Club in the topthree percent of Private Clubs. This is something to be proud of!2
