Short History of the Society.The Canterbury Society of <strong>Art</strong>s was formed onJuly 8th, 1880. In 1889 the Society was registeredunder the Companies Act, 1882. By special Actof Parliament a site for the present <strong>Gallery</strong> wasgranted by the Government. In 1890 the Permanent<strong>Gallery</strong> was built, and on the 13th of January, 1891,the Annual Meeting of Members was held in thenew building. Later on, it was found necessary toextend the building by widening the Armagh Streetfrontage, and the Government made a further grantof land, which necessitated removing part of theImmigration Office which was then situated wherethe Magistrate's Court now stands. In 1894 additionswere made to the building.The first Officers were:—President, H. J. Tancted;Vice-President, H. Wynn-Williams; Hon-Secretary and Treasurer, Captain E. F.
