Get a head start this summer with Bishop O’Dowd <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Prep</strong> courses:The <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Prep</strong> program helps prepare incoming freshmen for O’Dowd’s rigorous academics, as well asoffers courses that provide valuable skills for school and for life. The <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> affords our new students theopportunity to become comfortable with the campus, to meet some of the teachers they will have during the upcomingschool year, and to make new friends in a more relaxed educational environment. Students can build their own schedule,taking multiple classes in their areas of interest or need.Please note that College <strong>Prep</strong> Language Skills and Algebra 1- Intensified classes are required for some incomingfreshmen and are not intended as elective classes. Students will be notified by O’Dowd if they need to register for oneor both of these classes. If after taking the Math placement exam you are notified you are no longer required to take theAlgebra 1-Intensified class, then we will issue a refund or transfer your registration to another class at no charge.The <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Prep</strong> Program is only open to O’Dowd students or those from Catholic high schools in the Diocese ofOakland.June 18-July 11You may mix and match classes from our 1 hour and 2 hour offerings.Students who are taking academic classes as part of the <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Prep</strong> Program will need to attend a two-hour Tech Check workshop on eitherJune 16 or June 17. Strength and ConditioningThis class will teach students how to maximize their athletictraining to get the most out of their bodies. O’Dowd’sStrength and Conditioning Coach Jay Beito will instructstudents on the use of weights, plyometrics, and speed andagility training.Keyboarding WorkshopWhat is the one skill that will help your child tremendously,but is taken for granted by most schools/teachers? If youanswered keyboarding [what used to be called typing], youare correct. Hundreds of hours will be wasted in a slow andlaborious fashion over the course of four years in high schoolif your child has not mastered this skill. This workshop willfocus on basic keyboarding skills, as well as train students inthe use of Microsoft Word and Evernote, two commonly usedprograms in the education world. Students will also learnand practice file management skills, in particular the use ofDropbox. Students must have a laptop and complete a TechCheck Workshop for this class.Study Skills WorkshopThis workshop is geared towards providing students theskills they need to be successful in an academic setting.Students will learn and practice effective note taking styles,memorization techniques, test-preparation and test-takingstrategies, various styles of writing, time managementstrategies and the use of Google Office Suite [Docs,Presentations, Spreadsheets]. Students must have a laptopand complete a Tech Check Workshop for this class.Writing for <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>In this course, students will study exposition and argument inliterary prose, learn how to form a strong thesis and draft anessay focused on style, grammar, coherence and effectiveness.The course will conclude with exposure to poetry, providingan unparalleled opportunity for exploring feelings andlearning about the power of written expression. The primarygoal of this course is to assist students in developing as writersand readers while preparing them for high school English.Students must have a laptop and complete a Tech CheckWorkshop for this class.Public Speaking WorkshopLearn how to organize and deliver information ina meaningful manner, and master skills required formaking speeches or presentations (including PowerPoint,MovieMaker/iMovie, and Animoto), such as eye contact,body language, intonation, pitch, sound level, speed andthe use of visual aids. Students will also be made aware ofthe importance of protecting themselves online, and gainunderstanding about what constitutes cyberbullying and howto deal with cyberbullying situations. Students must have alaptop and complete a Tech Check Workshop for this class.Spanish 1 <strong>Prep</strong> WorkshopIn this workshop, students will be introduced to the yearlongSpanish 1 class offered at Bishop O’Dowd <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. Thescope of the subject matter and the cultural aspects of thecourse will be reviewed to provide students with scaffoldingfor their studies starting in the fall. Conversational Spanishwill be used throughout the class and specific skills andstrategies in conjugation, memorization and test preparationfor a language class will be reviewed and practiced. Workingwith one of the World Language Department’s instructors,students will also have the opportunity to become familiarwith the online classroom environment, <strong>School</strong>ogy (includingthe use of discussion boards), Dropbox and online tests.Students must have a laptop and complete a Tech CheckWorkshop for this class.


Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)I was informed that I have to take the Algebra 1-Intensified summer component and the College <strong>Prep</strong> Language Skills (CPLS)class. Can Itest out of them?You may not test out of the Language Skills requirement. The Math Department, however, offers the Algebra Readiness assessmenttest on March 31 which could eliminate or alter the summer session math requirement. You will be notified by the Math DepartmentCo-Chairperson, Tom Beatty, about your test results and placement in May.Will my grade in the <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> courses change my placement in the fall?Grades for Language Skills and Algebra 1-Intensified are Passed/Not Passed and are not intended as further evaluation forplacement. They are crafted to help prepare incoming freshmen for the challenges they will face in high school English and math.Do I need to wear the official O’Dowd polo? Can I wear flip flops and shorts?The <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> has a more relaxed dress code, so the O’Dowd polo is not required. Shirts with appropriate logos (no explicitlanguage or violent images) and appropriate coverage (no tank tops or halter tops) are fine. Flip flops are not acceptable footwear forsafety reasons. All footwear must at least have straps on the heel. Shorts in good condition and of appropriate length are acceptable.My family has vacation plans between June 17 and July 12. Can I miss any classes?There will be no classes July 2-4. Students may not miss more than three days before being given a Not Passed (NP) grade. Youracceptance into Bishop O’Dowd <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> was conditional, based on the successful completion of summer classes. Failure to passthese classes could result in the withdrawal of your acceptance for the fall or placement on academic probation. You should register foryour Tech Check workshop through the <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> online registration process- not the <strong>School</strong> Admin registration you usedto register for fall classes.Students choosing the O’Dowd Laptop Option, will receive their laptop on Monday, June 16, or Tuesday, June 17, depending onwhich Tech Check day they choose. Students choosing the Bring Your Own Laptop Option will need to bring their laptops onMonday, June 16, or Tuesday, June 17 (depending on their chosen Tech Check date/time).At Tech Check, students will configure their laptops and activate their student accounts. Students that attend Tech Check onJune 16 or June 17 will not be required to take Tech Check during the first week of August.Is there bus service and/or BART shuttle service to <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>?Unfortunately we are unable to provide bus service during the summer. There will be a shuttle available to and from the San LeandroBART station. The shuttle will leave the San Leandro BART station at 7:45a.m., leave O’Dowd at 12:40p.m. and again at 3:10p.m.This service will be available M-F from June 9- July 18. For more information about the BART service, please contact us atsummeracademy@bishopodowd.org.How much homework should I expect?In general, you should expect 20-30 minutes of homework for each academic class. This amount is dependent upon the amount ofmaterial covered in class during the day.What is the tardy policy?Students who are late to class, whether at the start of the day or between periods, will need to get an Admit to Class yellow slip fromthe Attendance Office [located at the end of the administration hallway]. Three tardies equate to one day’s absence. Students areallowed three days absence before being given a Not Passed (NP) grade for the class.I’ve tried to register online but the entry page will not accept the Authentication Code given to me by the school. How can I register?The online registration for <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> is completely separate from the <strong>School</strong> Admin registration used for the regular schoolyear. For <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, we use an online service called Thriva. You may have a Thriva account from a youth sports league or ifyou’ve bought tickets for past events at O’Dowd. If you cannot remember your information, simply register as a “New User.” Thrivawill merge any duplicate records created for your family.
