There was <strong>on</strong>ly two reliable dataset provid<strong>in</strong>glimited <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the issue of domestic violence –RH Survey and MICS3 <strong>in</strong> 2005. 5 These data clearly showthat combat<strong>in</strong>g domestic violence is a complex endeavourthat must not be approached <strong>on</strong>ly by seek<strong>in</strong>g toelim<strong>in</strong>ate external causes - <strong>in</strong>stead it requires a more<strong>in</strong>-depth approach that <strong>in</strong>cludes rais<strong>in</strong>g women’s awarenessabout human rights and violence.Lack of data <strong>on</strong> prevalence, causes, effects and c<strong>on</strong> -sequences of domestic violence seriously un de r m<strong>in</strong>esefforts to elaborate country-sensitive policies for combat<strong>in</strong>gviolence aga<strong>in</strong>st women. The presented surveywas c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> 2009 with<strong>in</strong> the frames of the UnitedNati<strong>on</strong>s populati<strong>on</strong> Fund (UNFPA) implementedproject “Combat<strong>in</strong>g Gender Based <strong>Violence</strong> <strong>in</strong> SouthCaucasus”(GBV-SC). GBV-SC project is a regi<strong>on</strong>al, multipr<strong>on</strong>ged<strong>in</strong>itiative supported by the Norwegian governmentand implemented <strong>in</strong> the three South CaucasusCountries – Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia by UNFPACountry Offices. Ma<strong>in</strong> objective of the project is to c<strong>on</strong>tributeto the nati<strong>on</strong>al resp<strong>on</strong>se to domestic violenceand strengthen the democratic governance <strong>in</strong> the threecountries by promot<strong>in</strong>g the respect for human rights,gender equality and women’s participati<strong>on</strong>.GBV-SC is the first regi<strong>on</strong>-wide project to hold a multipr<strong>on</strong>gedapproach to combat gender-based violencethrough:- Inform<strong>in</strong>g, communicat<strong>in</strong>g and educat<strong>in</strong>g the public<strong>on</strong> gender rights and issues;- Engender<strong>in</strong>g laws, policies and plans;- Support<strong>in</strong>g establishment of service mechanismsto prevent, protect and resp<strong>on</strong>d to gender-basedviolence acts;- Increas<strong>in</strong>g the efficiency and effectiveness of effortsaim<strong>in</strong>g at address<strong>in</strong>g gender-based violenceWith the support of UNFPA/Georgia the research wasc<strong>on</strong>ducted by two n<strong>on</strong>-governmental organizati<strong>on</strong>s:ACT-<str<strong>on</strong>g>Research</str<strong>on</strong>g> 6 and the Centre for Social Sciences (CSS) 7at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia. 85. Georgia 2005. http://www.child<strong>in</strong>fo.org/mics3_surveys.html6. http://www.act.ge/<strong>in</strong>dex.php?lang_id=ENG7. http://www.ucss.ge8. http://www.tsu.geThe qualitative research was enriched by the data collecti<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong> Samtskhe-Javakheti regi<strong>on</strong> with<strong>in</strong> the framesof UNIFEM-adm<strong>in</strong>istered UN Trust Fund to End <strong>Violence</strong><strong>Aga<strong>in</strong>st</strong> <strong>Women</strong> funded Project “Interdepartmental andPublic Measures for Elim<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of Family <strong>Violence</strong> <strong>in</strong>Georgia”.The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Nati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Survey <strong>on</strong> <strong>Domestic</strong> <strong>Violence</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>Women</strong>comprised of quantitative and qualitative research,aimed at generat<strong>in</strong>g the first nati<strong>on</strong>-wide data <strong>on</strong> thecauses and c<strong>on</strong>sequences of gender-based violence(particularly domestic violence) to be used as a basel<strong>in</strong>efor the formulati<strong>on</strong> of appropriate nati<strong>on</strong>al policies andstrategies to combat gender-based violence. 9The Nati<strong>on</strong>wide Survey <strong>on</strong> <strong>Domestic</strong> <strong>Violence</strong> <strong>Aga<strong>in</strong>st</strong><strong>Women</strong> <strong>in</strong> Georgia is the first comprehensive study <strong>in</strong>tomany aspects of domestic violence:• The study is first comprehensive survey carried out<strong>on</strong> the subject of domestic violence aga<strong>in</strong>st women<strong>in</strong> the country and it has the biggest sample, whichprovides <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> urban and rural settlementsall over Georgia;• The questi<strong>on</strong>naire used <strong>in</strong> the quantitative surveyallows for cross-cultural comparis<strong>on</strong>, as it was developedfrom a WHO questi<strong>on</strong>naire with m<strong>in</strong>or additi<strong>on</strong>sproceed<strong>in</strong>g from the country's unique characteristics;• The survey comb<strong>in</strong>es quantitative and qualitativeapproach <strong>in</strong> explor<strong>in</strong>g the causes and c<strong>on</strong>sequencesof domestic violence, as well as percepti<strong>on</strong>s andattitudes of women <strong>on</strong> domestic violence;• This is the first survey collect<strong>in</strong>g data <strong>on</strong> physicaland sexual violence for under-aged group of women,as well as sexual abuse by perpetrators otherthan husbands and family members.The target group of the quantitative research of this nati<strong>on</strong>widesurvey were women <strong>in</strong> age group 15-49. Interviewswith 2,391 women were completed. The implementati<strong>on</strong>of the Qualitative research <strong>on</strong> DV took place<strong>in</strong> parallel with the Quantitative research. Qualitative<str<strong>on</strong>g>Research</str<strong>on</strong>g> methodology as well as sample design was revisedand approved with the Internati<strong>on</strong>al C<strong>on</strong>sultant.25 <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terviews have been c<strong>on</strong>ducted; 10 focusgroup meet<strong>in</strong>gs were c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> Urban and RuralSett<strong>in</strong>gs and 2 participant observati<strong>on</strong>s have been completed.This mixed methodology study gives detailed<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the prevalence of domestic violenceexperienced by women, forms of violence, causes and9. http://www.unfpa.org.tr/gender.htm14
