S E M A 2 0 1 0 L A S V E G A Sby Dan Rowland and Bill Keegan, SVR MemberEverything you ever hear about the SEMA (SpecialtyEquipment Manufacturers Association) show in Las Vegasis more than likely true. More cars, more wheels and tires, more of any kind of car bling and foo-foo than you canimagine, and oh! ALL the pretty girls in Las Vegas to attractattention to and individualize more that 1600 displays inthousands and thousands of square feet. Bill and I spent 2½ days and may not have seen all of the three great halls andthe multitude of outside displays. We arrived Tuesday afternoon, registered our “Drifter” presspasses and managed to see about ½ of one three great halls. We had guest passes to the MONSTER parking lot partyat 4:30 – all the food and drinkwas free—and passes to get backin to the hall which closes at 5:00to see the private unveiling (forthe press) of the ABT AUDI R8---lots of carbon fiber, suspensionstiffening and beaucouphorsepower. With over 100,000 people there for the week every cab wasbooked as was every hotel and restaurant. Waiting in linefor things was the norm. We did manage to get up close to afew of the booths by getting there ahead of the crowds. Youmight recognize Mario here at one of the Mothers booths—he drew a lot of attention. Besides all the girls there werecelebrities everywhere. Car drivers and designers like Foose, and we managed to meet Noel Lee from Monster Cable ashe introduced his joint venture with California Customs.Their JV will announce a new line of car care products inthe spring. I snagged a sample of a chamois like absorbentmicrofiber drying towel that works better than anything Ihave ever used. The variety of products wasunbelievable. If you can imagineit—someone makes it and sells it.One entire section was devoted tofasteners, ones to exhaust, paint, suspensions, and, of course ,one entire hall to wheels and tires. That is what this show was originally about-- wheels andtires-- and eventually developed after 46 years to what it istoday. Here are a couple of the Porsche wheel enhancementoptions we viewed. There were many but most seemedfocused on the center lock option on the GT3 and Turbo.More aftermarket options are in the works as well.Every vendor, when asked about what they had for Porsche, referred to their catalog. From Bilstein to K & N, all hadPorsches in their sights. We passed the PCA interviewing theEscort boys in their display on the way to meet with Meguiarsand see their “wrap” demonstration. What was surprising were the new water based paint productsincluding colored chrome. Along with the new “Wrap”technology and new set of wheels you can change the color, texture and appearance of a car in less than a day. Wewatched gloss black go to flat white with carbon fiber hoodand roof—all with wrap like yousee on stick-on advertisements. Many manufacturers had overlaysin process including 3M andMeguiars. We saw paints that look one colorhead on and a different color a fewfeet away. Wheels as big as 30”were not uncommon. Saw onewith a 385 X 15 X 30 tire. Over 15 inches in width with therubber only 2” tall on the wheel. Saw the same wheels andtires later on a Hummer in the DUB display outside.Tuesday we got to ride in the new FORD SVT F150 out inthe parking lot. Lots of screeching, tire smoke and air time.Picture is a demo of FORD off road trucks on the samecourse where we rode the SVTs. After the ride we attendedEntertainment Arts (EA) debut of SPEED II, their latest andgreatest simulation software.Spectacular and versatile, withmany tracks included plus theoption to design your own anddrive about 30 different cars. Here is a sample of one ofthe other off road vehicles ondisplay. Everything seemed larger than life. There were 50plus mustangs and many show cars impossible to describe. Ifyou ever have the chance SEMA is well worth the visit, plan acouple of days and your most comfortable shoesIt is impossible in this short article to detail all the things wesaw while at SEMA. It certainly was an experience worthrepeating. Bill and I agreed, however, it probably isn’t an everyyear event. We were beat from walking and, hard as it is tobelieve, we had automotive overload.Page 2the drifter - Sacramento Valley Region - Porsche Club of America - www.derporsche.net

was a smashing success. Chairperson Karen Mangin did afabulous job with beautiful table decorations and charmingsouvenir champagne glasses at every place. Thanks to all ofthe sponsors, Fabrication Specialties, OK Tires, Joe Hill’sTransmissions, and Kern Breaux, door prizes and otheramenities were plentiful. Co-masters of ceremonies SallyBoeck and Randy Vidmar kept the program moving briskly.Event of the Year honors went to the San Simeon Tour chairedby Jean and Phil Keith and Vicki and Mike Willis. Rookiesof the Year were Gail and Bob Bitters. Sally Boeck presentedeach outgoing board member with a beautiful engraved crystalbeer mug, and in turn, Sally received a suitably engravedcrystal plate. The President’s Award, not automatically madeeach year, was awarded this year by Sally to Tom and BrendaSolter for opening their home and grounds the last two yearsfor SVR’s charity auction and concours. Herb Hoover receivedthe DRIFTER Award of Excellence for creating outstandingtech tip contributions during the past years. Starting 10 years ago(thanks to the persistence of Dennis Stettner) with the May1991 issue of THE DRIFTER, we’ve covered 30 years, 1971through 2000, of SVR history. Coincidently, the columnspanned exactly 356 months. It was a fun ride for me, gettingto re-read all those great DRIFTERS and re-live SVR history.Thank you.)At the December 4 joint 1990-1991 board meeting, treasurerRay Clements reported SVR had received $1,700 as its sharefrom the 1990 Parade in Monterey. Prime Rib was the fare dujour. The evening promised a gift and ornament exchangeand the usual end-of-year awards and recognition as well asthe presentation of the out-going and in-coming boards ofdirectors. S t i r r i n g t h e P o t w i t h t h e C h i e f S p o o nby Rik Larson, Vice President• 20% Holiday eCoupon is available from Porsche CarsNorth America (PCNA). You have to print the couponyourself. Just go to http://www.porsche.com/all/newsletter/tracking/?site=usa&name=pdds&campaign=newsletter&q=E72E5FFC6B7D96FD0BE12FCF280CAF2FF21327AF%3Bhttp%3a%2f%2fwww.porschedealer.com%2fdealer%2fusLocator%2f&id=2010-12• Now wasn’t that easy? You can also try an easier way whichis www.us.porsche.com, then put in your zip code in theupper right corner for the dealer location, then select thePorsche dealer near you (for most of us it would be NielloPorsche), then click on the tile that says “2010 HolidayeCoupon Program”.• And the last (and easiest way) is to go to http://niello.porschedealer.com/2010-Holiday-eCoupon-Program/17623/special.php. The coupon is not goodfor labor for repairs or vehicles but it is good for parts,Tequipment, and Porsche Design Driver’s Selectionitems.• Better hurry, the offer is good until December 31, 2010.If you go to the normal Niello Porsche website, it does notwork............there are two different websites for NielloPorsche.agility. As an attractive entry-level model, the “Cajun”will attract new and even younger customers to thePorsche brand along with the Boxster, the marketleader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sportscars. (All of the above verbiage is from the publicrelations folks, not me). Looks a little high off theground to me.• Have you caught the new “Top Gear” series on theHistory channel? It is American and they try allkinds of wild things with cars. The first episode wasthe battle between two snakes. One snake was theDodge Viper SRT and the other was a Cobra attackhelicopter. Get the picture? This show is based uponthe British television series started in October 2002and has produced more than 125 episodes.• Another new Porsche model ---- the 2012 CaymanR. F I N A N C I A L S T A T E O F M I N Dby Phil Wood, SVR TreasurerSeveral years back a severe hail storm damaged many of our condo’s roofs. The association had been underfundedand had to pass a special assessment, which invariably resulted in condo owner’s howls being heard all the way inAbilene. Learning to read and understand the association’s Profit and Loss statement and Balance Sheet became apersonal priority that month. (In some perverse manner, I’m the SVR treasurer because of that storm.)Fortunately, due to the frugalness of SVR event organizers and the SVR board’s cost-cutting efforts, SVRmembers don’t necessarily need that skill – SVR is in pretty good shape today. How good, and whether it’s toogood or not good enough, is part of the treasurer’s responsibility. So let’s talk about that. Before starting, it’s important to clear up a misperception about SVR. SVR is not a “Non-Profit” and nor arethere laws stipulating that we “break even” or run a zero balance. SVR is a “Tax-Exempt” corporation whichmeans that if we turn a profit, as we did last year, we don’t have to pay income taxes on it. There are lots of rulesregarding collecting and dispersing funds, but none that stipulates whether or not we turn a profit. With regards to financial health, SVR’s Profit & Loss is in the black, but the balance sheet swings wildlythroughout the year driven by event income and expenses, as well as the quarterly PCA membership receipts. So far this year, the balance has ranged from a low of $22.1K in May to a high of $47.5K last month. Today,November 3, 2010, SVR’s cash balance stands at $44.4K. Before year-end, it’ll be down again due to outstandingobligations. So before you call Cookie to demand your share in a dividend check, let me offer that a) tax lawsprevent that, b) as mentioned, some of the money is already allocated, and c) the money isn’t as much as youthink. Many SVR events require deposits which SVR has to fund – Mendocino Tour, the Christmas Party, and allcompetition events require huge facility deposits before the first member dollar is collected. The largest deposit sofar this year was over $16K. The 2011 San Simeon Tour deposit was just made even though the event doesn’t takeplace until June of next year! Seven months from now! Similarly, all of the facility, entertainment, award, and fooddeposits for next year’s CRAB35 will have to be accommodated before SVR sees much money from participants. When SVR does make money, a portion is returned to members in the form of subsidies. Drifter subscriptionsare heavily subsidized – SVR picks up a large part of that cost. The 150 Christmas party participants are havingalmost a third of their expenses subsidized. Autocross is regularly subsidized to keep prices low, and one tour thisyear was 100% subsidized. And unlike my condo association, events and tours that lose money are subsidized bythe club and not billed to the participants as a “special assessment to cover unforeseen expenses.”So yes, SVR is in good shape and everyone (event organizers, planners, the board and even your treasurer)are working hard to keep it that way. If any of this has piqued your interest, remember that as a tax-exemptcorporation, all of our records are in the public domain – Just ask and you can receive copies of tax statements.Or, if you’re really interested, this treasurer terms out in 2011 and it’s never too early to look for replacements.Anyone?A R O U N D T H E C O R N E RAnnual SVR Christmas Party - Whitney Oaks Golf Club, limited seating so don’t delay signing up. m e n d o c i n o t o u r 2 0 1 0by Randy Vidmar, SVR MemberPhotos Courtesy ofGerry Wade, Sue Fleming & Randy VidmarOh what a Tour! The 2010Mendocino Tour was no exception. This tour has beengoing on for over 20 years, and as far as I know it hasbeen created and managed by Rik Larson and his teamfor this entire time. This year was excellent as usual Wealso invited my stepson Matt and his girlfriend Ally aswell as another friend of ours, Michelle for this year’stour. Michelle is a new member of SVR and she justbought a 2007 White Carrera 4S Cabriolet with customchocolate interior and top. I was able to convince Michelleto drive a Porsche before she purchased “the othersports car”. That was all it took, and she was hooked. Imight also add that Michelle is an accomplished driverin her own right. Her dad, Sammy Weise raced Porschesin the late 50’s, so she grew up around them! Matt is afuture member of SVR as well, as soon as he can afford aPorsche! He always wants to drive mine.We all met Friday Morning, November 5th at NeilloPorsche and I might add that Neillo Porsche, who hashosted other events for SVR was a very gracious host forthis tour as well. They opened their beautiful showroomfor us and had complementary coffee and bottled waterfor all of us. After everyone signed off on the PCA InsuranceRelease and Rik had our “drivers meeting” weleft right on time for our first stop. The weather wasbeautiful and the traffic was light. Our first stop was agas stop at Pedrick Road and Interstate 80. Rik held another“drivers meeting” because additional cars joined usat this stop. It was good to see Babette and George Hattenand her beautiful blue Boxster. Because we had somany cars, Rik wisely broke us up into two groups. Onething California still has is beautiful Porsche roads. Thegroup we were in was confidently led by Bill and CathyKeegan in their beautiful Porsche 928. Didn’t evenknow they had one, I was looking for his red 911 Turbo. The road was, as expected, twisty and exciting. We droveto Sonoma Lake Park for lunch. The first group arrivedabout 30 minutes before the second group. Everyonebroke out lunch, that is, everyone except us!!! All of ourfood and drink was in Ally’s Honda and they were in thesecond group! We were saved however, because Michellethoughtfully put some cheese, and salmon in her car atthe last minute. The first group was leaving when westarted to have lunch.Mendocino Tour 2010 Fall ColorsCaught up in the strings, Sally, Mike & TimRandy’s Turbo in MendocinoPage 18the drifter - Sacramento Valley Region - Porsche Club of America - www.derporsche.net

We drove the second half of the tour with Matt and Allyand Michelle. We went up through the Alexander andAnderson Valleys, stopping at Navarro Winery for some“weekend juice”. We arrived at Little River Inn just as theweather was getting a little cool. We just love the NorthCoast weather this time of year. After checking into ourrooms, which by the way, because of Rik’s planning wasan effortless event. We ended up at a traditional “roomparty”. It was good for this guy to see many old friends.Rik Larson, Kirk and Linda Bradford, Allen and DoloresWeddle, Mike and Emily Willis, among others were allthere. Since there were other PCAers at Hill House, I’msure the “room parties” were repeated there as well. Wespent the next day walking around the town of Mendocinoand seeing more PCA’ers. Jim and Sheila McDade andBarbie Flores were there as well as the Neidels from GoldenGate Region. Rik had also planned a kite flying contest, wedidn’t attend because I was traveling with three women, andshopping was the order of the day! Rich McGlumphy alsoset up a miniature golf tournament in Ft Bragg on Saturdayas well.We went to dinner at Albion River Inn Restaurant and itwas spectacular as usual. Steve and Diane Harris were alsothere with their own party, which by all accounts, was goingstrong. On Sunday we awoke to a cool and drizzly day, which was fine by all of us. My ’86 930 Turbo just lovescool wet weather, read lots of power. We had a sumptuousbreakfast at Little River Inn and then headed back to Sacramento. We had a beautiful drive back to Sacramento albeitwe kept driving into more rain. Oh well, I don’t mindcleaning my car.For anyone who did not attend, something very specialwas missed. SVR is KNOWN for the MENDOCINOTOUR. If you have not attended, plan to do sonext year. This tour offers the beauty of the NorthCoast, good Porsche roads, and best of all, seeing goodfriends. Sitting on the deck and watching the sunsetis a very special occurrence for us. Once again, I wantDowntown Mendocino, Maureen Vidmar & Michelle WeeseFall Colors along Highway 128to extend personal heartfelt thanks for all the work RikLarson and his team did for putting on this tour for therest of us who attended.
