Sporting activitiesavailable include Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, CrossCountry, Netball, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rowing, Sailing, Football (soccer), Softball,Swimming, Tennis, Touch Football, Volleyball and Water Polo.Primary <strong>Sports</strong><strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong> is a member of Andrews Cup and the Brisbane Netball Association,which allows competition in Artistic Gymnastics, Athletics, Cross Country, Netball,Tennis, Touch Football, Softball and Swimming.Training and PracticeTransport for all boarders and day girls to and from training sessions at Windsor Parkand the Rowing Shed, as well as competitions, is provided by the <strong>School</strong>.<strong>St</strong> Margaret’s extra-curricular sports program 6<strong>St</strong>udents are expected to be punctual to all training sessions and are to the wear theappropriate uniform. <strong>St</strong>udents who are unable to attend a training session shouldinform the coordinator prior to the session in question. Changes to training sessions,cancellations due to inclement weather and weekly updates to competition times andvenues are regularly updated on the <strong>Sports</strong> Hub (website), Activities Notice Boardand the Activities Information Line on +61 7 3862 0850. Twitter is also used to sendmessages regarding sporting activities.<strong>St</strong>udents must wear their sports uniform if traveling by car (from home to a trainingsession) before 7:30am or if they plan to leave a training session or competitionafter 4:30pm. While in public, students must observe a high standard of personalbehaviour and dress at all times. Parents are requested to ensure that their daughtersare collected promptly at the end of training sessions and competitions. Any girl notcollected at the specified time will return to <strong>School</strong> on the bus to await collectionfrom the Breezeway.


Activities Code of BehaviourThe Activities Code of Behaviour must be observed for all activities. The Code ofBehaviour can be found in each individual <strong>Sports</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong> and students, staff andparents are expected to adhere to these rules and expectations at all times.Parental InvolvementParents have the opportunity to support the <strong>Sports</strong> Program on a number of levels,either by spectating, coaching or managing a team, or by becoming a member of asupport group.Support GroupsThe mission of the support groups at <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s is to work in partnership withthe <strong>School</strong> to enhance the extra-curricular experiences for students. Active supportgroups are seen as a vital means of fostering parental involvement within the <strong>School</strong>,which in turn encourages all students to maximise their potential through the <strong>Sports</strong>Program.Support groups at <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s operate under the umbrella of the <strong>St</strong> Margaret’sP&F Association Inc. and are therefore covered by the <strong>School</strong>’s insurance policies.Support groups are encouraged to help with the well-being of <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s studentsin all areas of endeavor within the <strong>School</strong>. Please ensure a teacher ispresent before leaving your daughter at Crosby Park.Cross Country: 11 years and over, Morning Training Sessions (Senior Squad)<strong>St</strong>udents who are 11 years old and over will train as part of the Secondary <strong>School</strong>Cross Country Program. Mr Eric Brown and his coaches will run with the girlsthrough the local streets and parks. <strong>St</strong>udents should be dropped at <strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong><strong>Sports</strong> Hall at 6:30am to meet the Primary staff member for roll call. If your daughterdoes not meet the standard required, she will be asked to train with the Junior Squadon Tuesday and Thursday mornings.Compulsory Cross Country TrainingAll girls 8 years and older who wish to be in the Cross Country team will need toattend compulsory training on Friday afternoons from 3:15-4:15pm at Crosby Park..


Touch Football: Years 5-7Training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for all teams. <strong>St</strong>udents needto meet the teachers in the Atrium at 3:20pm before walking in a group to CrosbyPark. <strong>Girls</strong> should be collected directly from Crosby Park after training at 5:15pm.Tennis: Years 5-7Tennis practice will take place on Wednesday mornings from 7-8am and Thursdayafternoons from 3:20-5:15pm. <strong>St</strong>udents are to meet the Fancutts Tennis Coaches onthe <strong>School</strong> tennis courts at the start of each session. All girls should be collected fromthe <strong>School</strong> tennis courts on Thursday afternoon at 5:15pm.Please note: <strong>Girls</strong> can only participate in either Touch Football or Tennis as theAndrews Cup Carnival for these sports are on the same day.Swimming: 8 – 13 years, Trials for Andrews Cup SwimmingThe Andrews Cup Swimming Squad will be selected based on times taken during thefirst week of swimming training. DanceJanice Heale Dance <strong>School</strong> caters for PrePrep to Year 5 students. The Principal of thedance school, Mrs Janice Heale, is a qualified registered Dance Specialist and BalletExaminer with over 20 years’ experience in the industry. The dance classes will beconducted by her staff members.Through dance and music, girls will develop coordination skills in a theatricalenvironment. In the younger classes props such as balls and ribbons are used in classto assist in the development of dance skills. Artistic gymnastics<strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong> competes in the QGSSSA Artistic Gymnastics competition. DeltaGymnastics oversees the program and has assisted students in becoming <strong>St</strong>ateand National Gymnastic Champions. <strong>St</strong>udents who compete for <strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong> willparticipate in several divisions, and in apparatus including vault, bars, beam and floor.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformTraining commences in Term One; the competition is also heldin the same term. Training sessions are held on three morningsa week and members are expected to attend all trainingsessions.The Philip Harris <strong>Sports</strong> Centre at <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s, conducted byDelta Gymnastics.The QGSSSA Gymnastics Competition is held at Moreton BayCollege (Manly) in April. There may also be various lead-upcompetitions conducted by other schools participating in thecompetition.Training is conducted in an Artistic Gymnastics leotard or the<strong>School</strong> bike shorts and the navy Physical Education shirt. Athletics<strong>St</strong> Margaret’s has a long history of success within Athletics arena. Participation andinterest in this sport has resulted in <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s becoming one of the most successfulschools within the QGSSSA Competition and in <strong>St</strong>ate and National Competitions.2002-2012 Del Mellefont Percentage Cup Winners2010 Second Place National Knockout Championships2009 Third Place QGSSSA2008 Second Place QGSSSAHead CoachThe Athletics program is run by Eric Brown who is a Level 5 Multi-events Coach. Erichas a Graduate Diploma in Elite <strong>Sports</strong> Coaching from The University of Queensland,and has coached athletes at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, andNational and <strong>St</strong>ate Championships.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformTraining sessions take place every Monday, Wednesdayand Friday morning and afternoon commencing part waythrough Term Two and continuing in Term Three and TermFour until the QGSSSA Competition. It is expected that allsquad members attend three sessions a week, including thecompulsory session on Wednesday morning.Windsor Park Sporting Fields (Windsor).The QGSSSA Competition is held in October at theQueensland <strong>Sports</strong> and Athletics Centre (Nathan). <strong>St</strong>udentswill compete in lead-up competition meets on Fridayevenings from mid-August to September at The University ofQueensland (<strong>St</strong> Lucia Campus) or QSAC (Nathan).Training can be conducted in the athletics uniform or the<strong>School</strong> navy Physical Education uniform. BadmintonBadminton is one of <strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong> Carnival <strong>Sports</strong>. One team can be entered, in eachyear group from Years 8 to 10, while students in Years 11 and 12 participate in Seniorand Open teams. Each team consists of four-to-six players.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformTraining commences in Term Three, with two sessions a weekin consultation with the coordinator.The Philip Harris <strong>Sports</strong> Centre.The QGSSSA Badminton Competition is held in October orNovember, over two Saturdays. The competition venues areIpswich <strong>Girls</strong>’ Grammar <strong>School</strong>, Centenary <strong>St</strong>ate High <strong>School</strong>and Brisbane <strong>St</strong>ate High <strong>School</strong>.The <strong>School</strong> navy Physical Education uniform is suitable forboth training and competition.<strong>St</strong> Margaret’s extra-curricular sports program 20


BasketballBasketball is an Autumn Fixture Sport and is played within the QGSSSACompetition. <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s boasts highly experienced coaches who aim to developBasketball into a highly competitive group.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformTraining commences in Term One and continues into TermTwo. Team training occurs twice a week. It is an expectationthat all team members attend both training sessions.The Philip Harris <strong>Sports</strong> Centre and The <strong>Sports</strong> Centre:Brisbane Entertainment Centre (Boondall).Games are conducted every Friday afternoon during Term Oneand Term Two. Venues vary depending on the location of thehost school.The <strong>School</strong> basketball singlet is available to purchase from the<strong>School</strong> Supplies Shop and the shirt is then numbered. CricketCricket involves girls from all year levels. Team members are selected based on theirability rather than their age or year level. The number of <strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong> cricket teamsvaries from year to year, dependent upon demand.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformTraining commences in Term Four and continues into TermOne. LifesavingThe Life Saving Competition is run by the Royal Life Saving Society. <strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong>has had a lot of success with life saving over the years. The competition includesa number of different events for both individuals and teams. Along with manyoutstanding individual results, the team came home with the Sheena Dyason Shieldfor Queensland Secondary <strong>School</strong>s Life Saving Championships – Champion <strong>School</strong>Female for the 14th year and second place in the overall Cup.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformTraining commences in Term One at the conclusion ofQGSSSA swimming and takes place before and after schooltwice a week.The 50-metre swimming pool.The <strong>St</strong>ate Lifesaving Championships are held in either Marchor April. NetballThe <strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong> Netball Program is one of the best school-based programs inQueensland. The program involves elite coaches including former Firebirds Coachand Australian representative Vicki Wilson, previous <strong>St</strong>ate U21 and U17 coachAmanda Sheaffe, and previous Head Coach of QAS Tracey Bruce. All coachesare actively involved in the Netball Program which involves both participation inQGSSSA and the Brisbane Netball Club Association.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformQGSSSA training commences in Term Two and continuesin Term Three. Club training commences in Term One andcontinues through to Term Three. Rhythmic gymnasticsRhythmic Gymnastics teams compete in the QGSSSA Competition across a rangeof apparatus that may include ribbon, hoop, ball, clubs and rope. RowingThere are references to rowing at <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s dating back to the start of the20th century. However, it was the formation of the Brisbane <strong>School</strong>girls’ RowingAssociation (BSRA) in 1990 that really established Rowing as a prominent sportwithin the framework of <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s. In 2005, the <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s Rowing Shed,located just 1.5km from the <strong>School</strong> in Yowogerra Park on Breakfast Creek, wascompleted. The facility allows a full fleet of world-class boats and oars, as well ascoaching tinnies and rowing machines to be stored and accessed by all studentsthroughout the year. Rowing at <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s is about developing lifelong, worthwhileskills through training. Rowing requires a high level of teamwork, commitment anddedication above most other sports. <strong>St</strong> Margaret’s remains highly competitive withinthe regattas and The Head of the River competition.TrainingTraining VenueCompetitionUniformTraining is held in Terms Two and Three.<strong>St</strong> Margaret’s Rowing Shed, Sandgate Road, Albion.The BSRA Regatta Season in held on Saturdays in Term Threeat Lake Kawana on the Sunshine Coast.Training is conducted in the Physical Education polo shirt andbike pants or the Rowing Suit (Zootie). SailingSailing is run through the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. <strong>St</strong> <strong>Margaret's</strong> Sailingcaters for girls from Years 7 to 12.
