A DIFFERENT INTERPRETATION?When Mandy Baker, HR Officer at Manor Fresh Ltd,was looking for a bespoke course for her in-houseinterpreters, her first port of call was Rachel Bowser,Skills for Life Co-ordinator at University of Lincoln,Holbeach Campus.Supporting FactoryTraining to non-EnglishemployeesA course for trainers whodeliver in house trainingfor both English & foreignnational employeesRachel and her team had successfully delivered languagecourses at Manor Fresh for many years. Mandy said,“what I wanted, and what Rachel delivered, was abespoke course to impress upon the interpreters thatthey act on behalf of the company and to give them theskills and confidence needed to take charge, whenneeded. For example in situations where they need tointerrupt a flow of conversation in order to interpret whathas been said so far. Courses out there were degreelevel —way over the top for our small requirements”.Rachel explained, “Following on-site languageassessments with potential interpreters, Mandy providedsamples of various documents, eg Return to WorkInterview forms and the Disciplinary and GrievanceProcedure. These were used as resource material by thefive foreign nationals during the day’s training. Theyundertook role plays in these aspects, which wererecorded so that they could play it back and discuss. Aninterpreter’s code of conduct was developed; they haveto respect the confidentiality of the situations they areinvolved in and need to exhibit integrity andprofessionalism”.Three months on, Mandy has seen the benefits of thetraining and says "we have much more confidence, whenworking with our interpreters, that those colleagues whosefirst language isn't English fully understand everythingbeing communicated to them. It also gives them theopportunity to ask pertinent questions to further theirunderstanding."An Introduction toCompany InterpretingA course for foreignnational employeeswho currently areinterpreting informallyA two day course, as reported above, would include♦ Practise consecutive interpreting♦ Familiarisation of company documentation♦ Production of a Glossary of terms♦ Awareness of a code of practiceBefore the course a sample of the company’s procedureswill be required. For more information, contact Rachel BowserThis course is delivered over 2 days and includes:♦♦♦♦Training Techniques in embedding language skillsBasic English grammarHow to teach vocabulary; developing a glossaryTeaching the four skills♦ Speaking♦ Listening♦ Reading♦ WritingTrainers will observe language tutors teaching English in afood company; assessment will be by oral presentation,micro-teaching and the creation of a training plan andresources.
