THE AWARDING INSTITUTIONUniversity of Wales, UK (UW)Founded by Royal Charter in 1893, the University of Wales is thedegree-awarding body for a number of higher education studentsin Wales, as well as for many at other higher education institutionsin the United Kingdom and overseas. To date the University hasawarded over 600,000 degrees.The University’s position enabled it to focus not only on its primaryfunctions as a degree awarding body and provider of services tothe Welsh higher education sector but also, as a national institution,it played an enhanced role in protecting and promoting the economy,culture and language of Wales.In July of 2011, the governing bodies of the University of Wales, ofSwansea Metropolitan University and the University of Wales: TrinitySaint David made a commitment to transform themselves for thefuture through merger.The transformed University will establish itself as one of the keyinstitutions in Wales delivering high quality learning and researchopportunities for students both at home and abroad.
