InternshipI came, I saw, I wanted, - that's how I made my decision tospend this summer in Coca – Cola HBC Lietuva. I felt reallyimportant, when CCHBC general director himself (not anassistant of the assistant) came to tell us about his companyin “The Days of Opportunities”. Straight after the presentationI went to talk with Public Affairs manager Vaidotas Cucėnas,who told more about CCHBC internships. It's clear as a daythat the person in such position knew how to be convincingand make me believe that their intern will be granted farmore responsibility than C&C, i.e. Copy&Coffee. This isimportant for every student. This was important for me.Hence, when CCHBC called me and invited to work with twoprojects in HR and PR departments I agreed.The first day was a trip to Tallinn, where I met employees whocreate „The Recognition and Reward System”. In Estonia I wasjust in time: it was the day when they celebrated sales record.Thus, to be honest, they didn't leave an impression of “workhard, party hard”. The first part of the slogan somehow wasmissing.My mission in HR department was to contribute to theproject „The Recognition and Reward System”, which wasstarted by developing a plan, deadlines, and dividing tasks. Inthe very beginning we together prepared the questionnairesfor CCHBC Baltics employees, collected data about othercompanies. After this period more dynamic, thus, moreinteresting part of work started. I was interviewing CCHBCemployees in Lithuania and Latvia. Also, I did twopresentations in Vilnius and Riga during Employee WorkingCouncil meetings. Talking to employees in completelydifferent positions was a perfect opportunity to understandnot only their professions and personalities but also to findout all the gossips. I guess I know more than any permanentemployee of the company. Inaddition, I saw the wholechain that beverages gothrough until they get into thehands of thirsty buyer(Surprise, surprise, „Coca –Cola” is not growing inby Kristina Saudargaitė „Maxima“!). I will neverforget trip to Alytus, whereCoca – Cola factory isestablished. Why? Well, the answer is worth a newparagraph.While I was planning my trip to Alytus, one of employeesadvised me asking “Coca – Cola” car in order to go there.Thus, I went to a man responsible for that and confidentlysaid why and what I need. The man looked like “What? A car?For you?”. However, he calmly said “OK, you just need to passmy examination”. Having in mind that I've never driven inVilnius, especially with a suspicious man nearby, it was aslight shock. Having lost a dozen of my nerves cells, finally Igot it and with a load music reached Alytus. Friendly Alytusworkers even organized excursion and treated me to unseen„Cola Black“, which is exported to other countries. In the endof the day, I made conclusions that asking something fromthe company has nothing to do with being impertinent. It justhelps to find out how to create a good working environment.Together with PR team we created a project, which will belaunched in winter. Despite that, it was July when wediscussed it during two – days meeting in Riga. I saw the realkitchen of PR. What a good psychologists, diplomats andstrategists PR people must be! In addition to that, VaidotasCucėnas prepared a lecture “The Basics of Journalism“. „So, inthree hours we have finished the master of journalism, “ welaughed. This knowledge and many Vaidotas stories about thereal message sent by press helped me understand how fastthe information is spreading and what a powerful tool it is.While eating the “farewell cake” at the very last day of myinternship somebody asked me whether I got knowledge andskills. OpinionOther Winds of Changeby the opinion manWhen I came to the opening ceremony of the new study year, Ithought - well, here we go. Again, the chorus, the new Y1 whodo not know when to stand up and when to sit down, again therector, who never runs out of imagination while interpretingthe gifts from the graduates (probably he was the best studentof literature in his childhood), again the president with tips fornewcomers… Nothing new, in other words. But I was so wrong..Firstly, whatever Y1 comes you'll always have a feeling - "damn,they are so different". The Estonians look smart, the averageage of Lithuanians is at least above 20, while the Latvians seemto be ready to show that such gossips as "They say nu ja, nukamon" or "Ze Fink is on ze table" is the past. Of course, theyhold some common Y1 features - half of the teams sell food astheir entrepreneurial challenges (isn't it more a cookingchallenge?), they all adore E. Hunter, sleep while B.Boers isgiving lectures about corporate governance, and do not likeMath teaching assistants. On the other hand, most of theorganizations are looking to newcomers with somedisappointment in their eyes - it seems that Y1 is not so eager toparticipate in various activities. It is very difficult to get theminvolved to organizations called other than iFund or DebateClub (it's one of the reasons why this Insider comes so thin andso late…) Nevertheless, they are definitely active in some otherareas. For example, IT support expressed their willingness to"congratulate" the newborn hacker of SSE - at first somebodyinstalled a key logger to the PC downstairs (that's why it's nothere for now), later on somebody played around with the newcomputers in the PC labs. If more such inventive people joinedthe school this year we may expect some occasional fireworkson the 5th floor or at least no-smile-for-a-long-time faces of theIT support. Fortunately, all the depressed people will get a log toswim over the river as it seems that administration is alsoconsidering the issue of psychological state of students veryseriously this year. Not only they removed Reference &Citations from the required courses, thus easing the lives of Y1during the first months, but also introduced student counselingservice. And, just as they have heard secret thoughts of Y2 & Y3,instead of having personal interviews, Y1 is now attendingcompulsory meetings with a psychologist. Who cares that youmight have no problems with your friends (maybe just becauseyou don't have any), you'll still have to think of some,otherwise, a suspicious mark ("too healthy") might be putunder your surname. Administration seems to beimplementing a serious plan against unstable psychologicalstate of students. The winds of changes are blowing in thelobby, as now you cannot leave anything but your coat outthere - anything else will be put into a box by the reception: be ita book or be it an umbrella. We all know that discipline helpswhile dealing with many issues, but an umbrella?.. Also,somebody remembered the old saying "East or west - home isbest", rephrased it into "SSE or SSE - home is best" and changedthe closing hour of the school - now everybody has to go homeearlier. We, of course, agree that the atmosphere is cozier athome, and we might get relaxed there more easily. If only we allhad wireless there, we could spend evenings chatting with ourrelatives in Estonia or Lithuania as we did in the late evenings atSSE...Anyway, not everything is changing out there. There are thingsthat will probably never change. They include such things asBusiness Law exam, which was the same last year, this year, andeven during this year's re-exam (quite a challenge to try to passit, ah?), constant problems with printing, wireless & full inboxes(blame IT support, God of the Network, Microsoft orEstonians), internships during the summer, banquets in thelobby or in the yard. And the Summer Symposium, of course.The event, where the average salary of people around you istwice as much as the average salary in Estonia, whereLithuanians play basketball as if it was Olympics, everybodylooks to Bottomline with anger and to Spamma with seriousconsideration in their heads.It seems that this year the trend is to improve our mentalstability. Isn't that good? You do not like administration policy?Shame. We went straight to the websiteof biggest Lithuanian lottery organizer “Olifeja” and madestatistics on lucky numbers. Sounds like fun? It was evenmore fun when to our surprise, we found certain numbersthat were almost twice as likely to show up in any game. Itwas like - WoW! We suddenly became so excited andenthusiastic about it. Saulius called his friends in Lithuaniaand asked to buy quite a few tickets with the lucky numbers.16|INSIDER September 2007However, our excitement soon was discouraged a little whenwe found out that there was a mistake in the excel table thatwe made. Even though Saulius called his friends again we didnot let that enthusiasm leave us! There is something aboutthis energy of enthusiasm that keeps you going and makesyou creative as nothing else… Ideas were felt in the air. Andhere it was… they told me the concept that was laterdeveloped to “AdCopy”. I felt this click inside me and I waslike “Yes, awesome idea! We will make it happen. Lets bring iton!”. Yeah! All of us went crazy about the idea! Plan: Start inSSE Riga having one copier and then expand to Latvia. Thatnight we went to celebrate this to the city and I rememberhow we said “We will be on the Insider about this!”. And webelieved it. What you can learn from this: enthusiasm willhelp you create the ideas. They are already in your head andall around you, you just need the impulse to get real aboutthem. Once you are passionate about it the world will supplyyou with the necessary circumstances. So get a great teamright now, make some brainstorming and then go celebrateyour Idea. Field tested recipe! Company logo and concept,benefits of service, how emails don’t work, how students getlost among the many companies, how great it is to advertisethrough our way, nice and shiny.. it was all there. We believedit will work. Contacting at least 50 companies in all BalticStates was fun. Then we contacted all companies again inperson during DoO 2007. And besides we made apresentation during DoO to the company representatives aswell. Results? No replies, no emails, no callbacks. B*tches! : )Situations like this are likely to come up once you start. Andthey don’t feel nice. However, deal with it and the faster youget over it and continue the better. So we did not get anyresults after quite a Bit of work invested.After DoO there were more busy periods in terms of studiesso again we were distracted and didn’t really pay muchattention to making it happen. But the idea was still alive inour minds. Alive big time! Since idea in SSE Riga did not workwe decided to get over it and took another glance at ouropportunities. And you should do the same once you faceissues with your team. Let go of bad thoughts, getenthusiastic and take action! Now! In such way our idea of 1copier in SSE Riga mutated to 40 copiers in biggestuniversities of the Baltic States. 40X expansion! So when thesummer came I was not too unhappy not to get accepted totop investment banks once I told them I want to beentrepreneur and during summer I stopped wanting to be itbecause each of us became one officially after we got our SIA“AdCopy” registration number. During summer we took twoother great guys to our team, Toms and Jevgeni, to be able tohave explosive start in all three countries andcontacted all biggest universities throughoutthe countries. I would also like to mentionRuslans here since he helped a lot in thebeginning of summer – we contacted firstuniversities in Latvia together with him. Awesome man, it wasgreat to work with You! However, he couldnot stay with the Team due to lack of timeand his participation in other importantprojects. So in this part the lesson is to keepgoing once you face challenges and be ableto take a fresh look on things. Look for thestrength inside you and cultivate the spirit ofthe Team! Parties are good for that hehe ; )What else could you learn from “AdCopy”?Firstly, one thing that is important is theteam composition. Not only the people haveto be motivated, but they also shouldsupport each other. In our team we havesome people who are very positive all thetime and some who are neutral and take areal consideration. That definitely helps inthe business to make the right solutions. Wewere lucky that the team like that formednaturally, but there are so many talentedpeople in SSE Riga that it should not be aproblem to find your perfect Team. Besides,you can take other people outside ourEntrepreneurshipschool as well. The world is yours and there is plenty foreveryone!Secondly, one of the things why, as organizers and jury toldus, we were successful in “Ideju Kauss” was that the team hasto know how to sell and we have shown that we have thisskill. After business plans evaluation our idea was ranked 5th/ 6th , but after the presentation and answering the questionsof the jury we made it to the top by surpassing the highestranked business plan which took 2nd place in the end.Lesson?
