BonSecours <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Francis</strong> Hospital designation as a Magnet facility in 2010 and <strong>Roper</strong>Hospital’s pursuit of Magnet designation in 2008 and again in 2012 has elevatedRSFH to be the employer of choice for many new nurses. The threeundergraduate nursing programs in Charleston and others throughout the stateare graduating hundreds of new nurses desiring employment in our areahospitals each year. With the depressed economy and the “livability” appeal ofCharleston, the RN vacancy rate for positions suitable to new graduates, reachedan all- time low. New nurses in the Charleston area are experiencing monthsbetween licensure and employment with little opportunity to continue developingtheir clinical knowledge and skills after graduation.Recognizing the current gap between graduation and employment in ourcommunity, the post-graduate internship offers new nurses the opportunity tocontinue development of practice through didactic classes and mentorship of aclinical coach. The program provides a structured educational experience tostrengthen critical thinking and technical skills in a proctored clinical setting.The advantages of this program to the new graduate nurse intern are multi-fold andInclude: Clinical experience to strengthen interns’ employment marketability Individualized mentorship and learning environment to enhanceclinical skills and knowledge Exposure to diverse practice settings Enhanced visibility to nursing leadership and future employmentopportunities in RSFH system Prioritization and organization skill development in the acutepatient care setting Proctored transition to practice with no commitment to remain atRSFHThe limitation of the program to the nurse intern is the inability to practice fullyindependent without direct RN supervision and the lack of compensation for timein clinical setting.


Program RequirementsThis unpaid program requires applicants to hold a minimum education requirement ofBachelor’s Degree in <strong>Nursing</strong> (BSN) and current licensure as a Registered Nurse inSouth Carolina or other recognized compact state, as well as complete theapplication process.Application ProcessInterested graduates must complete the following:1) This step only necessary if selected for interview:a. BLS for <strong>Healthcare</strong> Provider CardSubmit completed application via email to cathy.kenner@rsfh.comOnce application is confirmed as complete, graduates will be contacted forinterviews, if applicable, with RSFH nursing leaders and peers.Non-employees: Completion of this program does not guarantee employment.Employment opportunities must be sought through the current Human Resourcesapplication process.Program CurriculumThe internship offers a 16 week curriculum with an opportunity for extension of8 weeks if mutually agreed by the applicant and manager. Schedules will be flexible based on the availability of appropriateclinical coaches and consideration of clinical setting preference ofthe nurse intern. Clinical schedules should always follow the clinical coach workschedule to the extent possible and offer 36-40 hours per week ofproctored clinical experience


Professional Development will offer a curriculum of didacticmodules with contact hours to include:o assessment skills and pathophysiology of specific systems• cardiac (6 hours)• pulmonary (4 hours)• neuro (4 hours)• renal (4 hours)o critical thinking skills (3.5 hours)o basic arrhythmia interpretation (20 hours)o lab value interpretation and interventions (6.5 hours)o evidence-based teaching skills (3 hours)o Preparatory skills for practice• new graduate class (7 hours)• strategies for disruptive behavior (3.5 hours)• resume building and interview techniques (1 hour)FYI – If selected, navy scrubs are the required attire.
