It waspretty fun though. The drama was wonderful. Themusic was great. I loved watching the kindergartenssongs. It was so cute! It was really fun to watchthe drama, especially the sweeps. We all have to rememberour lines on stage so it was a pretty big job. The Christmas Concert was on Thursday December17th. Some other kids were chimney sweeps like me. Some of the parts were Big Sweep, Cobweb, Sooty,Ash Can, Sweepstakes and Fluey. When it was time to do the Christmas Concert I was really nervous when Istepped on to the stage but later on I was fine. My Mom, Dad and my Grandpa were there for the afternoon.Every time I had a line to say, I could see my parents staring at me the whole time. There were also theselights that kept on flashing at my face when I said my line. All of the chimney sweeps had to sing some songsthat we didn’t even know but in the end it was a great Christmas concert. Later we had to do an Evening concert. My other grandparents came to see me. At the end they said I was wonderful and they loved it. Christmas Concert Memories

LATE FRENCH IMMERSION AN ATTRACTIVE OPTION FOR STUDENTSWhether you want your children to get a firm academic foothold in English first or you simply hadn’t consideredFrench Immersion until your child was already halfway through elementary school, people have differentreasons for considering late French Immersion. And unlike most divisions in the province, River East Transcona School Division (RETSD) takes this into accountand offers a great degree of flexibility with the entry point of its French Immersion Program.Students have the option to start at three different times throughout their schooling: kindergarten, Grade 1, orGrade 7 through the late French Immersion Program.Late French Immersion has been offered at Munroe Junior High School in RETSD since 1982, and has grownto be the largest program of its kind in the province. Proving extremely successful, it has resulted in high proficiencyin French while ensuring students have the opportunity to do well across the curriculum. Recent researchhas shown that students who begin to learn another language as adolescents can master that language. This is proving true at Miles Macdonell Collegiate, where Munroe students continue French Immersion, joiningstudents from early French Immersion to complete the program together. Miles Macdonell CollegiateFrench Immersion staff say that Munroe students have been very successful in both French Immersion andInternational Baccalaureate French Immersion, and have performed very well in the provincial French publicspeaking competition, Concours d’art oratoire.Students’ continuing success upon transitioning to Miles Macdonell suggests a very effective foundation forFrench language proficiency is created in Munroe’s late French Immersion. An early indicator of Munroe students’proficiency in French was observed last fall, when they hosted a French celebration for their parents, proudly demonstrating their new language skills after a mere six weeks in the program.During a recent national Canadian Association of Immersion Teachers conference hosted in Winnipeg, Mr.Alexandre “Sacha” Trudeau stated in his opening address that learning a second language leads to personalgrowth. Learning and “managing” two languages provides the opportunity to explore two cultures, to expandways of thinking, to discover humour in a second language, to interact with individuals in different contextsand to become more sensitive to the well-being of a person’s global brothers and sisters. To learn more about the program, be sure to attend the late French Immersion open house at Munroe JuniorHigh School, 405 Munroe Avenue, on February 18, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., or contact Gareth Neufeld, Principal, orRobert Campbell, Vice-Principal, at 661-4451.WARD 4 SCHOOL TRUSTEESRod Giesbrecht661-5984Eva Prysizney668-3501Mail can be addressed to the Board of Trusteesand sent to the Administration Offices:589 Roch St., Winnipeg, MB, R2K 2P7c/o Gay Caithness
