Senior Joy Jiang of Haltom High<br />
<strong>School</strong> competed in the UIL<br />
spelling and vocabulary<br />
competition. After winning the<br />
district competition at Northwest<br />
HS, she finished second at the<br />
regional competition in Lubbock,<br />
qualifying for a repeat trip to<br />
Austin and the State meet. In<br />
Austin, she finished in a tie for<br />
ninth place, spelling 95 of the 100<br />
words correctly. The state<br />
champion scored a 98.<br />
Haltom High <strong>School</strong>’s academic<br />
quiz league team placed second at<br />
the 2007 tournament. Team<br />

Dustin Lewis and Kerryana Medlin<br />
scored above the 95 percentile on<br />
the national German exam. The<br />
exam was taken by 22,000 students<br />
nationwide. Lewis took the level<br />
three test and had a 96 percent test<br />
score (95 percentile nationwide).<br />
Medlin took the level two test and<br />
had a 95 percent test score (96<br />
percentile nationwide).<br />
The Academic Decathlon Team<br />
<strong>from</strong> Haltom High <strong>School</strong>,<br />
competed at the Region IX ACDEC<br />
meet. The students competed in<br />
10 different scholastic events that<br />
focused on China and its<br />
influences on the world. Joy Jiang<br />
won first place in the honors<br />
division essay competition and<br />
third place in the honors division<br />
speech competition. Receiving first<br />
place medals are: Coy Johnson,<br />
varsity division; Christina<br />
Thompson, scholastic division;<br />
and Joy Jiang, honors division.<br />
Overall the team placed 10th in the<br />
region out of 13 schools. Haltom<br />

Day & Competition 2007.” The staff<br />
received the “Innovation of the<br />
Year” award for their newspaper<br />
design for the 2006-07 school year.<br />
Richland High <strong>School</strong>’s JROTC<br />
program recently score 592 out of<br />
600 at their formal inspection.<br />
<strong>Birdville</strong> and Haltom high schools<br />
earned 588 and 584 points<br />
respectively. During the out<br />
briefing, the 12th Brigade<br />
inspectors advised the district that<br />
BISD’s JROTC program is only one<br />
of three districts in 12th Brigade<br />
(Texas and New Mexico) to have all<br />
of its JROTC programs earn Honor<br />
Unit with Distinction this school<br />
year. Additionally, all three schools<br />
received Distinguished <strong>School</strong><br />
Support (the highest rating a<br />
school’s administrators, staff,and<br />
JROTCinstructors can receive)<br />
