SPACE POWER CONFERENCE
ESPC 2011
Announcement and Call for Papers
In cooperation with:
6–10 June 2011
OBJECTIVES
CONFERENCE TOPICS
The ninth European Space Power Conference
follows the success of the previous ESPC
conferences in Konstanz (2008), Stresa (2005),
Porto (2002), Tarragona (1998), Poitiers (1995), Graz
(1993), Firenze (1991) and Madrid (1989) held on a
bi-annual and tri-annual basis. It is a unique forum
covering all aspects of electrical power for space
applications, from power system architecture to
generation and storage, to power conversion and
power management.
Indeed, the electrical power subsystem is a core
element of any spacecraft and the progress in
technology is still giving new challenges and
opportunities: reliability, functionality and
performance have always been the main drivers
for the power technology development; however
the cost reduction requirement for LEO and
Papers are solicited in the following topic areas:
Power Systems and Subsystems
• Spacecraft power systems and performances
• Power system architecture and modelling
• Power control protection and distribution
• Power systems for deep space missions and
exploration
Photovoltaic Generators
• Solar cells, module and generator design and
technology
• Mechanical, structural and thermal design
• Testing, calibration and in-flight results
• Environmental interactions
LANGUAGE The working language of the conference is English.
GEO missions invites the exploration of product
standardisation possibilities with flexible concepts
for using recurrent designs.
In the past years power generation by advanced
Gallium-Arsenide technology has become a baseline
solution for satellites, and the next generation of
solar cells is expected to bring further improvements
in costs and performance. Furthermore, it is clear
that a spin-off from space technology into terrestrial
applications is ongoing.
Since the first paper on lithium ion batteries for space
appeared at the ESPC in 1998, lithium ion batteries
have become the technology of choice for practically
all new spacecraft. The main focus of interest is
expected to be the management and performance of
these batteries during integration and flight.
Batteries and Fuel Cells
• Electrochemical cell technology (secondary and
primary including fuel cells and supercapacitors)
• Battery design and management
• Testing, modelling and flight performance
Power Electronics
• Power conversion techniques
• Integrated functions (power hybrids, etc.)
• Control theory, modelling and analysis
• High-voltage power conversion, technology,
control and testing methods
• Space motor drives and control
• Components

Prospective authors are asked to submit an abstract
explaining the problem that will be addressed in the
paper, the major results, and how this is different
from the closest existing literature. The principal
criteria in selecting abstracts will be the quality and
detail levels of the presented technical solutions
associated to the usefulness of the work to the
Conference Registrations (excluding VAT):
Early Registration (by 1 April 2011): 600 euros
Registration (after 1 April 2011): 650 euros
Reduced registration for retired fellows: 300 euros
ESPC 2011 will take place in the Conference Centre
of Saint-Raphaël (south of France). Located halfway
between Cannes and Saint-Tropez (38 km),
Companies are invited to propose displays of
their products during the conference. A dedicated
exhibition hall will be located in the middle of the
conference centre.
Following the success of the workshops held during
the previous conferences some half-day workshops
and seminars will be held at the 9th European
Space Power Conference.
Workshop and seminar themes are under
If an abstract is accepted, authors must submit a final
manuscript before the deadline and participate to the
conference. Authors will be invited to present their
papers during an oral or poster session.
