In 1878, St. Anne’s was rebuilt at itscurrent location and the old church was torn down and much of the site remained vacantfor the next century. In the 1950’s, island resident Mort Pero and his son built “Pero’s Pow Wow” just stepsaway on Main Street. By the end of the decade Arlene and Bob Chambers purchased theproperty and renamed the Village Inn and sold it to Dennis Brodeur and Jack Chambersin 1963. Dennis left the partnership to open his own Mustang Lounge and Jack convertedthe premises to a gift shop in 1977.Dennis Cawthorne began coming to the island as an Albion College student working forCarriage Tours and returned to run the Chamber of of Commerce during his Harvard LawSchool years. He married Cynthia at St. Anne’s Church in 1976 and two years later theypurchased the Village Inn’s vacant back yard and built the brand new Village Inn thatopened on June 6, 1981.Dennis has been an attorney, a former Michigan Legislator, a U.S. delegate tointernational conferences in Brussels, Moscow and Beijing and long time memberand Chairman of the Mackinac Island State Park Commission by appointment of theGovernor. Because of Cynthia and Dennis’s commitment to the island and to the state ofMichigan, the Village Inn has become a popular year round gathering place. For almostthirty years Mary and Ron Dufina managed the property for the Cawthornes. Grand Hotelwas honored to take over the management of the newly named Cawthorne’s Village Innon December 1, 2011.
