During July August, theextinction was higher compared toobservations made in other months.Extinction coefficient in the Infraredbands of J,H, and K was alsomeasured on a few nights in August1988.These observations indicate thefollowing :KJ = 0.05 1 0.01 magKH = 0.04 i 0.01 magKK = 0.04 i 0.01 mag(iv) IR SKY RADlATlON AND IR SKYNOISEThe IR sky radiation emission andsky noise measurements are veryimportant for an IR observatory siteselection. In the thermal infraredband both the emission from the skyand absorption due to theatmosphere, contribute towardlimiting the quality of ground basedIR observations. The emission andabsorption by the terrestrialatmosphere are directly related. Inthe case of atmospheric windows,where the water vapour absorption isrelatively weak but where the watervapour is a major absorber, therelationship between emission anasky absorption is monotonic (loweremission means less absorption).Variations in the emission orabsorption within the atmosphericwindows at 5,lO, 20 microns andlonger wavelengths are dominated-bythe variations in the water vapourcontent of the atmosphere. Merrill(refer to NNTT report) has measuredthe IR sky background radiations withNOAO's IR Sky Background Monitor(IRSB monitor) in 11, 18 and 25microns wave bands and tried to drivea correlation between the precipitablewater vapour and IR sky radiation. InFigure 2 of Merrill's paper "APreliminaryAssessment ofNOAO/NNTTIR Sky BackgroundMonitor Performance", shows arelation between the emissivity at -1 8.5micron and the precipitable watervapour (PWV). For low PWV the IRemissivity is also low.For this site selection, it was notpossible to acquire an IR SkyBackground Monitor, therefore theactualvalues of IR sky emissivity arenot available. However, one is able. toderive some estimates of the IRemissivity from the PWVobservations. Generally, the zenithPWV value at Mt. Nimmu remains lassthan 1.5-2 mm, therefore it may bepresumed that the IR sky radiationwould be also quite low.
