ernar venet in marseillesIN 2013 THE NEW EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTUREcoproductionL’artprendl’air andMarseille -Provence 2013with the supportof the City of Marseilles“désordre“, Between monumentalism and humanityFrom march 15th to September 27th 2013, Bernar Venet invests the Palace of the Pharo’s park toexhibit a monumental work, specially designed for the new European capital of culture. This exhibitionis a coproduction between the artist, the association Lartprendlair and Marseille-Provence2013 with the support of Marseilles’ city. With the support of the City, the well-known public gardenwill be a green setting for a corten steel structure dominating the entrance of the old harbour, facing the contemporary buildings of the new museums like Mucem and Mediterranean VillaPRESS RELEASE 2013 January
Unpredictable as life itself“ ... order and disorder, determinated orundeterminated...“Standing next to the traditional monument or viewing this graceful contemporary work in frontof the panorama of the harbour, the impression would be spectacular. The architectural spacecould be turned as well as a showcase for the installation. Particularly for this work in Marseilles, the disorganization or randomness characterizes this unique composition by twelve monumentalarcs standing up as a labyrinthine structure, free of rules. The renowned sculptor increases a newprocess and vision:“My work combines different concepts, apparently in opposition but in fact there are a real complementarity:order and disorder, determined or undetermined. The monumental steel structuresof curved arcs seem to defy gravity in their ingenious balance. Despite their explicit weightiness, however, they are never passive or inert. The actions of chance, the gravity of materials, theprecariousness of equilibrium still placing my sculpture not in the realm of cold calculation but inthat of the precarious and unpredictable human condition. The oblique is caught between risingand falling, and is to that degree perilous. The different pieces are linked in staggered rows like inan abstract collapse. From chaos springs a free composition criticizing the ideal utopia of order.“
At the heart of the cityEnsemble of84 corten steel ArcsThe relation to the azurean landscape affects the structure of the sculpture. Hard steel contrastswith the soft green forms of nature and contradicts the massive volumes of adjacent historic building. The incandescent red colour of corten consequent to the treatment of of chromium, zincand copper, finds an ideal complementarity with the area and a balance to the horizon line. Twelvepieces composed of arcs welded together, rise more than four meters high. The exceptional installationboth in terms of dimension, weight and monumentality, looks as if they could be rocked, thus projecting imminent movement: a penetration of space that defies gravity, slots between thesea and the harbour and imposes itself as a dynamic junction, a connection between art andpublic.“When I discovered the park’s perspectives, the wonderful view plunging into the sea, the brightatmosphere and on the opposite bank, the Mucem’s building rising, I had no doubt. This gardenhas a free access for all tourists who come to admire the point of view and is opened to the childrenlike a playground. My labyrinthine work will be fascinating and almost welcoming thanks to afree circulation.“As his work progresses, Venet becomes increasingly aware of human inability to impose a predeterminedorder. The monumental will not be dominating. Because this perception leads him topermit chance to play a role in art.
Arc in movementAn accident invisiblecreates theunpredictable state. In Pharo’s parc, the installation of Bernar Venet is a grouping of twelve Arcs. These lines justappeared after six years of refection. Returned to New York in 1976 and moved into a loft on WestBroadway, Bernar Venet began a series of paintings called Angles and Arcs. In 1978, the titleswould move from picture to wall. The wall would thus play the role of a page. The line henceforthbecame the focus of the artist’s work. The lines spread out all its forms : curved (arcs), broken(angles), and straight (diagonals). Soon, the disappearance of the painting and canvas opened thepath not just to inderteminate lines but also to sculpture. In 1979, Bernar Venet made his first woodreliefs of Arcs. He also began to make them in steel, aware that a wall was not the only fertile soilfor this approach. Initially placed against a wall, these lines ultimately became independant. Theyinaugurated a new sense of space that defies the laws of familiarity. Bernar Venet netherthelessfelt that sculpture should not limit itself to the confined spaces associated with art but he wasenvisaging work that confronts the space of landscape. In 1884, the artist worked on a giganticproject called 185.4 Arcs, to be installed on a highway near Auxerre, a hundred miles from Paris.« I take as much, if not more, pleasure in installing my sculptures in interior spaces and neutralthan nature, wich often is too imposing. A sculpture’s identity can be affected by its relationship tolandscape. Its contemplation is distorted by the beauty or wealth of the surrounding environment.» For Marseilles, Bernar Venet chooses a new serie : inclined arcs. They will be arranged on theslant, just like before falling. Taking up, the combination finds the ideal balance. The center ofgravity is changing and the corten steel heaviness creates a tangible breaking strain. The ordercollapses. An accident invisible creates the unpredictable state. « With these works I want tosuggest the realm of the non-proportional, the non-constructed, non-preestablished. A realm withdifferent parameters, for creating the unforeseen and unexpected. »
