Please take a moment and learn abouthow you can join us to help others in need.www.lenoxhill.orgLegal Director Helps Organize Legal Services Conferencefor 200 Attorneys and AdvocatesCarolyn Silver, Director of our Legal Advocacy and Organizing Department, helped organize the first LEAP CivilLegal Services Conference in October. LEAP is a group of 10 New York City civil legal services providers,including the Neighborhood House, working together to promote justice for low-income people. Together, theten groups provide free legal assistance tomore than 60,000 low-income householdsevery year. New York State Senator andDemocratic Conference Leader John Sampsongave the keynote address to the nearly 200attorneys and advocates at the Conference,which was hosted by the law firm Weil,Gotshal & Manges.Two other members of our LegalDepartment also presented workshops:Lauren Sismondo, one of our HousingAttorneys, discussed the basics of HousingCourt practice and Shana Bloom, one of ourtwo Health Care Advocates, presented onhealth insurance options for unemployedand uninsured individuals.Carolyn Silver, Director of Legal Advocacy andOrganizing, Lauren Sismondo, Housing Attorney, andShana Bloom, Health Care Advocate4 • WINTER 2010
COMMUNITY • IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD • AROUND THE COMMUNITY • IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD •Clients Celebrate the Holidays atWomen’s Mental Health ShelterOur Women’s Mental Health Shelter at the Park Avenue Armory is a temporaryhome to hundreds of women throughout the year, all age 45 and older wholive with mental illness. Each year, our talented staff works collaborativelywith our clients to help them move into their own permanent housing: 50 womenfound new homes in 2009. With so many homeless adults in the City, our Shelter isalways filled-to-capacity — 84 women spent the holidays with us at the Shelter thisyear. We organized several holiday events in December to help these clientscelebrate the season including a karaoke party, a visit by volunteers who distributedgifts and sang Christmas Carols, a Christmas dinner and a gospel performance atthe BrooklynTabernacle.Clients and staff also decorated the Shelterand watched performances by students fromthe East Side’s Talented Unlimited High Schoolat our Annual Tree Lighting Party on December11th. While the holidays are often difficult forresidents of our Shelter, clients joined in theholiday spirit.Students from the Talented Unlimited High Schoolperform for clientsNew Accessible Elevator Project CommencesFor those of you familiar with our current,small elevator, you’ll be excited to learnthat we’ve started the critical capitalproject of adding a new, accessible elevator inour headquarters at 331 East 70th Street. Asthe largest single component of our buildingwideAccessibility Project, the elevator will havean incredibly positive impact on the thousandsof daily visitors to our building. We are nowmoving into the final phase of the planningprocess with our architects and engineers andexpect to start construction this spring. We areso grateful to City Council Members Jessica S.Lappin and Daniel R.
