Dear Badin Alumni and Friends,PRINCIPAL’S LETTERThe 2011-12 school year was a greatsuccess. Congratulations to the Class of 2012.Our newest alumni did a fabulous job. Weare extremely proud of their achievementsand, most importantly, the positive leadershipthey provided. You can read about theiraccomplishments throughout this edition ofthe Shades of Green. The school year was an exciting one.Earlier this year, we announced our new iPadprogram for all four grades. Our teachershave been working hard to learn new andcreative ways to implement the iPad intotheir curriculum in order to enhance studentlearning. Now, we are excited to announce that theacademic wing of Badin High School will befully air conditioned by the start of classesin August. This is a $450,000 project thatwill certainly make for a more comfortablelearning environment for our students. AirForce One, a company out of Columbus, hasthe contract for a ductless system similar toone recently installed at Mount Notre DameHigh School in Cincinnati. The system is veryefficient and will allow us to minimize theuse of our boilers, which were installed whenBHS first opened in 1966. This is a majorinvestment that our school board felt wasimportant. We have also entered into a new sportsmedicine partnership with Fort Hamilton/Kettering Health Network. We listened toseveral proposals, and it made great senseto partner with an organization in our ownbackyard. The package will include an on-siteathletic trainer at Badin 40 hours per week, and save us nearly $6,000 a year. Our studentathleteswill be in very good hands with FortHamilton. Please keep the family of the late Mr.Tom Rains ’68 in your prayers. Tom was anoutstanding government and social studiesteacher here for nearly 30 years prior tohis passing in April. He was a major positiveinfluence on so many members of the Badinfamily during his lifetime. He will be missed.Thank you to our trio of retirees – Mrs.Shirley Ensor (cafeteria manager), Mrs. DeniseHolderbach (health clinic), and Mr. Steve Smith(Spanish). Badin High School keeps going eachyear – now 46 graduating classes – but it’s theindividuals who make a difference day-in andday-out with their hard work and dedication. While we graduated a small but mightyclass of 101 seniors, we are excited about thefact that we have an incoming class of morethan 150 freshmen! This continues a trendthat has seen the incoming freshman class bethe largest in the school for three consecutiveyears. There are a number of reasons for this, but one very substantial one is your ongoingsupport of Badin and the way you spread apositive message about our school. We trulyappreciate that.It is a pleasure to be the principal of BadinHigh School. Thanks for everything you do forus. Keep in touch and let us know how youare doing. If we can be of any assistance toyou, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail. Weare proud of the Badin family and all that yourepresent.God bless you and your family –Brian D. PendergestBrian D. Pendergest ’90Principal3

Tom Rains ’68 a strong teacher who will be missedHere is the simplest way to underline the legacy of thelate Tom Rains ’68: Patrick Keating ‘07 is a social studiesteacher because of Mr. Rains.“I was thinking about education or business, and Mr.Rains strongly suggested I become a teacher,’’ recalledKeating, who is now teaching the very same class, inthe very same classroom, that Rains taught. “It was agood choice and a good fit for me. Thanks to him, Imade the right decision.”Rains, 62, passed away on April 13 after an 18-monthbattle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Karen, two children, SuzanneRoth ’90 and Joseph Rains ’96, and two grandchildren.“Tom was an outstanding teacher who cared a lot about his students,’’ saidBHS Principal Brian Pendergest ‘90. “If you had the privilege of being taughtby Tom Rains, you learned a lot. He will be greatly missed by the Badin family.”Rains taught government and social studies at Badin since 1983. His drysense of humor and intimate knowledge of the workings of government werelong admired among students.“I received the social studies award from him as a senior,’’ said Keating, whohad Rains for Advanced Placement Government that year. “It was really coolto get that from him.”As a student at Miami University, Keating kept in touch with Rains. “My sophomoreyear, he invited me into his classroom.I observed a little bit and we had some serious conversations about teaching, about the tricks of the trade.”Keating, who had been doing various sub work at Badin, stepped in for Rains as a long-term substitute in the fall of 2011.“It was very tough at first; bittersweet,’’ Keating said. “But the best compliment I received was that he was glad it was me(stepping in), that it wouldn’t be anybody else.”Rains was a graduate of Ohio University who also coached baseball at Badin in the mid-1980s. An Oxford resident, hewas a member of St. Peter in Chains Church in Hamilton.Cafeteria manager Ensor fed BHS students very wellShirley Ensor smiles in the midst of the kitchenshe called home for 24 years as Badin’s cafeteriamanager. She retired on June 1.Regarding Tom Rains:“He was a great person and educator and will bemissed. All three of my children had the pleasure ofhaving him as a teacher and only have kind words andgreat stories.”Mr. and Mrs. Ron Salerno on behalf of their children,Ronny ’07, Maria ’10 and Theresa ‘12“I was petrified the first day I walked in here,’’ recalled Shirley Ensor – whogot through that day, and 24 years of additional days as the cafeteria managerat Badin High School. While the Class of 2012 walked out with pomp andcircumstance, Ensor quietly retired on June 1.“It’s been a good journey,’’ Ensor said. “This has really been a good place towork. I’ve made a lot of good friends.”Ensor made Badin a good place to eat, as well, as students for years havebragged about the food at BHS – the mashed potatoes, macaroni-and-cheese,the various soups and so much more.“A lot of the food is homemade,’’ Ensor said. “The women who work heredo so much. The kitchen is so nice, so clean. There are no problems. I’veenjoyed it very much.”Ensor’s kitchen featured at least two hot lunch offerings every day, a saladbar, and plenty of munchies for those not quite sure what they wanted. How do you know how many to feed regularly?“We keep detailed daily records,’’ she said. “You learn what you need.We have 450 students at Badin this year – more than 300 of them would buy something on a daily basis.”Ensor’s husband had passed away and she was looking for work when she went to Fairfield High to see if anything wasavailable in their food service operation. There was just a modest part-time job … but the manager suggested that Shirley callBadin High, knowing of an opening here. “I called Mr. Tom Collins (former Badin principal) on a Friday … and I started thefollowing Monday,’’ Ensor said. “It’s been very rewarding.”12

-by Kelli Verdin Kurtz ‘88, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement“For I know the plans I have foryou,” declares the LORD, “ plansto prosper you and not to harmyou, plans to give you hope and afuture.” -Jeremiah 29:11My favorite time of the school year is graduation. Watching ourstudent leaders transform into alumni. Watching parents marvelat how quickly their children have grown. Watching our facultyand staff say farewell to the students they have reared. Comforted,in full confidence, that the future belongs to these studentsbecause they have been given the gift of Catholic education.I can’t help but swell with pride as I sit through commencementexercises...proud to be part of this supportive, faith-filled community.Graduation is usually the hottest ticket in town. Seatsare filled with parents, grandparents and close family friends. Thelegacy that is the Badin-Hamilton Catholic-Notre Dame communityis evidenced on this evening as I realize that a large majorityof these guests are themselves alumni, or have an alumnus intheir immediate family. And, once again, we come together as alarge family to support one another, to love one another, and topray for one another. In Pride. Tradition. Unity. Spirit. The success of this graduating class is, in many ways, attributableto the support of the Badin community. Did you know...- More than half of our students apply for tuitionassistance.- More than 30 percent of Badin students receivesome form of tuition grant, scholarship or subsidyfrom the work program which totaled more than$320,000 in 2011-2012.- 100 percent of the tuition assistance they receiveCOMES DIRECTLY FROM YOU... OUR GENEROUSBENEFACTORS.Not only do you support them during their Badin careers, butalso, your generosity continues a lifeline as they enter college. Our benefactors realize that the burden of Catholic school tuitionmakes affording college an overwhelming obstacle for manyof our families. This year we awarded four college scholarships, sponsored by Badin benefactors, to graduating seniors. Congratulationsto these students for their achievements, and thank youto the generous donors who make these college scholarshipspossible.Know that as these graduates leave our hallowed halls, they aretaking a bit of you with them. You have touched the lives of everystudent at Badin High School through your generous support.I feel confident that in the not-too-distant future, they will joinyou in supporting Badin...because that’s what families do.We are pleased to announce this year’scollegiate scholarship program recipients:Patrick Connelly Leadership Scholarship- Bethany NyeThe Patrick Connelly Leadership Scholarship wasestablished by the Connelly family in memory of Pat,Class of 1973. When I think of the Badin family, I envisiona large oak tree in fertile ground. The Badin root system is plentiful, strongand well fertilized. The trunk is sturdyand ever growing. The limbs and leavesare abundant and bountiful. Throughsunshine, storms, droughts, snow & ice,the oak tree continues to grow and bendto adapt to its ever changing environment. The root system continues to flourishand the above ground portion growsnew leaves and sheds them every year, further fertilizing the ground it stands in.Annual Fund Ask –A message from Advancementby Angie Pieper Gray ‘83Director of Development and MarketingAccording to the Colorado State University web page on ‘Healthy Rootsand Healthy Trees’: “…The root system of a tree performs many vitalfunctions. In winter, it is a store-house for essential food reserves neededby the tree to produce spring foliage. Roots absorb and transport waterand minerals from the soil to the rest of the tree. Roots also anchor theportion of the tree above ground. It is important to keep the portionabove ground healthy to ensure an adequate food supply for the roots tocontinue their important functions…”As I read the information for healthy trees and roots, I am reminded howimportant both the root system and the above ground portion are andhow they must work together to provide an overall healthy tree; and thatproves true for the Badin family. The root system represents our alumnifrom Badin, Hamilton Catholic, and Notre Dame High Schools; the aboveportion of the tree our current school family.Annual Fund Gift LevelsRam’s Rally Leadership CouncilStephen T. Badin Circle Gifts of $10,000 or moreThe following giving levels will fluctuate based on annual tuition:Pride Circle $ 7,900 (One full tuition grant/academic scholarship)Tradition Circle $ 5,925 (75% tuition grant/academic scholarship)Unity Circle $ 3,950 (50% tuition grant/academic scholarship)Spirit Circle $ 1,975 (25% tuition grant/academic scholarship)_____Champions Club $500 or moreGreen & White Club $250 +Century Club $100 +New London Club $up to $99In addition to the Rams Rally Leadership Council will bethe new Rams Rally Corporate Partners who will havetheir corporate logos listed on the inside back cover ofthe Shades of Green Newsletter, published three times peryear, and in our monthly parent e-newsletter.Rams Rally Corporate Supporter levels - $250, $500, $750,$1000, $2000, $5000) Contact Angie Gray for more information -agray@badinhs.org.All Annual Fund donors receive a personal acknowledgement andare recognized in the Annual Report by gift level and constituency. The entire tree needs ongoing nurturing to remainvibrant and healthy and I am asking your help.Build a Brighter Badin ~ Please consider a gift today.ANNUAL FUNDOur tree is producing bountiful students who are service-minded and wellprepared for college and the world beyond our walls.
