The organisation operates basesacross Derby for young people to access its services and hasrecently opened its first venture in nearby Nottingham.I got involved five years ago when therewas“a nightclub here and I thought 'wow'because it had the kinds of things I hadn'tseen before like table tennis and a pooltable and DJ decks, says James Robinson, who grew up in Allenton.”(Ref/emep/CS10-Sept09)

“I got referred by my school as part of aYouth Improvement Programme because ofproblems with anti-social behaviour. It'shelped me a lot because it showed me thatthere's a lot more to life than crime. I can playthe decks, the X-box, or pool and help otheryoung people rather than going aroundsmashing things up.I was an apprentice for a yearbut “ now I'm a 'mentor' myself tosome of the young people - I talkto them about school, home, anger and anything really thatthey need to talk about.“I'm living proof that Enthusiasm works- I'm alot more mature now and I know what I want, which is to help kids in the area with the samesort of problems and issues I had when I wasyounger. I'm in charge of two youth clubsnow and I do a lot of youth work - organisinglitter picks, helping old people in the area, working on allotments. The kids feel they can relate tome. “ I live here, I've been in gangsand I've done it all but I got outand now I want to show othersthat they can turn their lives’around too. I hope 'Enthusiasm'goes national and other kidsaround the country can gain whatI've gained.Enthusiasm123 Hawthorn StreetAllentonDerbyDE24 8BBT: 01332 362479W: www.enthusiasm.org.ukChris Doyle, a senior manager with Enthusiamagrees: “I grew up in a deprived area of Derby, the parks were run down, houses were trashywith burnt out cars in the streets and there wasnothing to do.I've been involved with Enthusiamsince “ I was 12 and I’m 25 now. I'dseen various youth initiatives whichhad let me down but not in this case.I came in the summer holidays Mondayto Friday and had loads of fun - somefantastic activities including DJingand volunteering. It gave me positivechannel for my energy instead ofdrink, drugs and fighting.“I was caught in a nightclub with Ecstasy tabsand looking back my choice was either to endup in prison or dead - or to turn my life around.I needed to get away from the gangster lifestyleand 'Enthusiasm' helped me do that.Enthusiasm gave me a lot of trainingand “ guidance. I became a youthworker to give something back andI'm a senior manager here now withresponsibility for operations acrossDerby. I manage 15 people and go tomeetings with Neighbourhood Managers,Social Workers and others workingwith young people.“We're not a 9-5 organisation; we'll take calls atall hours. The youth workers here are part of thecommunity and so they can relate to the kidswho live here. We will talk about love, care andrespect with the kids because often they don'tget that in other areas of their lives. We're notsuccessful with everybody but if we can help afew kids change their lives to something morepositive then that makes it all worthwhile.”East Midlands Empowerment PartnershipLeicester North West Community Forum, Alchemy House,90-92 Bishopdale Road, Beaumont Leys, Leicester LE4 0SRT: 0116 229 3207 E: aruna.bhagwan@alchemyhouse.co.uk W: www.emep.org.uk
