ANNUAL REPORT - Whitireia Community Polytechnic

Kia ora koutouI am very pleased to report on theperformance of Whitireia CommunityPolytechnic in 2012. In summary, itwas an excellent year with many fineachievements across academic, quality,financial and partnership fronts.The Educational Performance Indicators(EPIs) published nationally showWhitireia in the top rank of Institutesof Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs).Particularly pleasing was a significant liftin Māori achievement in 2012. Financialperformance was excellent with $62.8mof income and a surplus of $1.2m. Thisis noteworthy given the large numberof building projects funded from cashreserves over the last two years. Thisincludes the new $17m Health buildingon the Porirua campus, an outstandingstate-of-art facility with highly visibleclassrooms, learning streets, operablewalls, simulation suites and a great lookand feel.Excellent progress was also made inthe Students First strategic partnershipwith Wellington Institute of Technology(WelTec). This commenced in 2011 andfrom 1 January 2012, the institutionswere governed by one Council. Thereis one Academic Board and ninekey projects really moved forward in2012. These projects included Counciloperations, industry and students,Academic Board, branding, campusdevelopments, marketing, internationalmarketing, shared services, centres ofexcellence.2012 has also seen significantopportunities taken in the acquisitionof other businesses where there is areally good strategic fit for Whitireia.These include Computer Power (NZ)Limited and The New Zealand Film andTelevision School.Council continued to debate the issuesthat affect our institution with passion,vigour and a sound commitmentto community needs. Thank you toall Councillors for contributing yourknowledge and time to Whitireia andthe partnership with WelTec. I wouldlike to acknowledge the work of Dr AlanBarker and Peter Preston who retiredfrom the Council at the end of 2012.On behalf of Council I would like tothank Chief Executive Don Campbellfor his leadership in 2012 and theimportant and significant achievements.I would also like to thank the Executiveteam and staff for their dedication to theaims and goals of Whitireia.2012 has been a really good year forWhitireia and the institution is in goodheart to face the new challenges 2013will bring.Noho ora maiHon Roger Sowry ONZMCouncil ChairCOUNCIL CHAIR //HON ROGER SOWRY ONZM
