RAY BROWN, NCAT DIRECTOR, RETIRESAt a retirement event in July, 2007, Ray Brown washonored by Auburn University, the NCAT board of directors,state departments of transportation, the National AsphaltPavement Association, industry groups, and contractorswith whom he had worked during his years at the NationalCenter for AsphaltTechnology (NCAT).Auburn Engineeringdean Larry Bene<strong>field</strong>o f f i c i a t e d a t t h eevent, which includedc o m m e n t s f r o mAlabama DOT officials;Chuck Van Deusen,chairman of the NCATboard of directors; andJack Weigel, NCATapplications steeringRay Brown addressed the peoplepresent at the retirement event.committee chairman.Brown was honoredwith the title of ProfessorEmeritus by the CivilEngineering Department, and received a commendationfrom the Alabama Governor Bob Riley, which waspresented to him by Mike Harper, Alabama DOT assistantchief engineer.Many past and current NCAT board members andformer graduate students spoke at the event, expressingtheir thanks for Ray’s influence in their lives. NAPAMike Harper, Alabama DOT assistant chief engineer, presentedto Ray Brown a commendation from the Honorable Governorof the State of Alabama.president Mike Acott told the group of the importance ofBrown’s leadership. “The industry has been able to get adirect return on its investments at NCAT because of Ray’sleadership. He bridged the gap between industry, highwaydepartments, DOTs, and the FHWA. He fully understoodthe need for products, processes, and knowledge that helpedus specify and build long-lasting pavements.”Brown retired from Auburn August 1, 2007 after 17years as the director of NCAT to accept a position withthe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways ExperimentStation in Vicksburg, Miss.Larry Bene<strong>field</strong>, dean of engineering, honored Ray Brown with the title of professor emeritus.
