Guidelines and Handling Procedures
The following Guidelines are provided to our customers to assure that optimum
performance is attained from TenCate Advanced Composites (TCAC) Cyanate Ester
resin products. This resin system will provide strong bonds, composite hardware and
structures if some simple procedures are properly followed. These procedures are
recommended practices and should be refined for the customers’ specific applications
as required.
Storage Conditions and Shelf Life
Mixed Pot Life
The mixed adhesive shall have a pot life of 4 hours maximum at room
temperature (77F). The pot life has been defined by TCAC as the length of time for a
150 gram mass of resin can be stored at a given temperature before doubling in
viscosity. Any resin mix over 150 grams should have the temperature monitored and
appropriate safety procedures followed if the resin temperature is increased over room
temperature.
Adhesive Application
EX-1515-1 is ideal for potting, filling, bonding, liquid shim and wet lay-up repair
applications. The choice is governed by the customers’ specific requirements. The
mixed adhesive can be applied to surfaces prepared for bonding per the customers
developed process. The adhesive can be smoothed on to the faying surface with an
applicator, brushed on to dry fabric, used for wet winding, injected by syringe, poured
into a mold or core prior to potting. The cure conditions should follow the recommended
cure cycle of 2-5 F/min to 250 F for 5 hours or the cure cycle developed by the
customer.
The recommended cure cycle for EX-1515-1 is to apply 25 in Hg minimum to the
vacuum bagged part, followed by 40-100 psig externally if an autoclave is used. Next
ramp the temperature at 2-5 F/min to 200 F and hold for 60 minutes, followed by a ramp
of the temperature at 2-5 F to 250 F and hold for 180 minutes. Cool at 10 F/min
maximum to room temperature. A free standing post cure at 350 F for 2 hour will
increase the service temperature to 325 F maximum. Part specific cure cycles should
be developed by the user to account for tooling, part size, geometry and processing
equipment.
Safety Precautions
During the heating or curing of the resin close control of the temperature is
required to avoid an exothermic reaction. Closely controlled heating processes should
be used, applying excessive heat or heating too quickly can cause an undesired
reaction, especially when large masses of resin are used. Any resin mix over 150 grams
should have the temperature monitored and appropriate safety procedures followed if
the resin temperature is increased over room temperature. Any mixed resin that will not
be used within the pot life shall be disposed of after consultation with a certified waste
disposal contractor in accordance with all Federal, State and local regulations.
