A bicycling city<strong>Uppsala</strong> residents cycle both summer and winter. An extensive network ofcycle paths makes it easy to get around <strong>Uppsala</strong>, whether you want to takea bicycle tour of the beautiful surroundings or just get around the city. In thecentral areas of the city, there are more than 3,000 bike racks. If you wouldlike to rent a bike, contact the tourist office for information.Resecentrum (<strong>Uppsala</strong> Travel Centre)<strong>Uppsala</strong> is Sweden’s second largest rail destination, based on passengernumbers. In recent years, the entire station area has been refurbished tocreate a modern travel hub. There is now a new station building, newplatforms, new streets and passages that create new routes between theeastern and western parts of the city. New parks and artworks have alsobeen created and installed in the area. The old station building has beenconverted into an award-winning restaurant.Urban planningThe city centre is growing in all directions. New shops and clothing brandsare establishing a presence in <strong>Uppsala</strong>. Public spaces, malls, shops andmarketplaces are being developed to meet the needs of visitors. Pedestrianisedareas have been introduced and the entire stretch along the river Fyrishas been redeveloped to include piers and beach environments. The city isbecoming more attractive and more natural meeting places are being added.Flagship streetAn important route through the city centre is Vaksalagatan-Drottninggatan. The‘Flagship street’ project involves improving the street environment, giving it auniform expression through lighting, signage and other improvements that willmake the street <strong>Uppsala</strong>’s flagship street.Dragarbrunnsgatan (Dragarbrunn street)Dragarbrunnsgatan is a wonderful street to stroll along. Two new squares inviteyou to sit down for a while and enjoy the view. Dragarbrunns torg (square)near the Galleria Dragarbrunn (mall) has seating, magnolias and a fountain.The other square, between Bangårdsgatan and Vretgränd, has taken as itstheme ‘living rooms‘ and small cherry trees share the area with homely lampsand benches.

FyristorgEver since the 1700s, farmers have sold their produce in the Fyristorg square.Today, for example, you can buy crafts, locally-grown vegetables, flowers andhome-made bread, depending on the season.VaksalatorgThis square is the heart of the eastern part of <strong>Uppsala</strong>, next to <strong>Uppsala</strong>Konsert & Kongress and the Kvarnen business building. During the season andon Saturdays, the square teems with vegetable sellers and flea market tables.Here you can find some real bargains, new and old. The square is also usedextensively for various events. Head for Vaksalatorg via Vaksalagatan, with itsselection of shops and eateries.Farmers’ MarketDuring the summer and Christmas week, you can shop at the Farmers’ Marketnear the travel centre on Fridays after lunch. Things to see and doNo matter what the time of year you visit <strong>Uppsala</strong>, there is always somethingto experience. The choice is yours, the range is huge. The former home of the ‘flower king’at Linnéträdgården is now a museum and a cultural gem. The Botanical gardenbelow the castle has been named one of Sweden’s most beautiful parksand the jury called it a gem in the city of <strong>Uppsala</strong>. The beautiful Stadsträdgården(Municipal garden) is the ‘green lung’ of the city. Along the river Fyris,south of the city centre, you can stroll among the greenery or along the banksof the river, visit the playground or the café, which is open in the summer. Inthe <strong>English</strong> Park, behind the university library, there is a playground for youngervisitors and it was here that Owe Törnqvist, a famous Swedish songwriter,sang that he danced the rumba.MuseumsExperience <strong>Uppsala</strong>’s many museums. The dungeons at <strong>Uppsala</strong> Castle giveyou a strangely exciting and educational experience taking you back in timethrough Sweden’s history. Biotopia shows animals in their natural environmentand has lots of activities for children and young people. Gustavianum is <strong>Uppsala</strong>University’s oldest preserved building. Besides the anatomical theatre andthe Augsburg Art Cabinet, there is an exhibition depicting the history of theUniversity from 1477 until today. The Uppland Museum is a cultural meetingplace for those who want to know more about Uppland and <strong>Uppsala</strong>. PelleSvanslös hus tells the story of Sweden’s kindest and wisest cat, Peter-No-Tail,and if you are interested in dinosaurs, visit the Museum of Evolution. <strong>Uppsala</strong>University Library’s Carolina Rediviva houses a real treasure – the Silver Bible.


CinemaThere are a number of cinemas in the city centre. Filmstaden, Spegeln andRoyal show current cinema releases. Student city<strong>Uppsala</strong> is also a student city. It has two universities, <strong>Uppsala</strong> University andthe Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, which, with its world-leadingresearch and education, supplies <strong>Uppsala</strong> with a skilled workforce and newbusinesses rooted in research. The beautiful student association buildings, or‘nationshus’, provide venues for students to enjoy evening entertainment, butalso house libraries, cafés and association premises.<strong>Uppsala</strong> UniversityToday, around 40,000 students study at <strong>Uppsala</strong> University, which was foundedin 1477. Some of its famous alumni include Carl Linnaeus, Dag Hammarskjöld,Betty Pettersson, Peter Englund, Carina Lidbom and Niklas Zennström.The most popular courses include law, medicine, psychology and nursing. TheUniversity is ranked among the top 100 in the world. Do not miss a visit to theuniversity auditorium, the beautiful building near the university park.The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)SLU has more than 4,000 students. The University’s history dates back to the1700s, but what is called SLU today was founded in 1977. Courses tend tofocus on veterinary science, agronomy and landscape architecture. In 2011,the University was ranked one of Sweden’s top three and the campus is locatedjust south of the centre of Ultuna.May Day celebrations30th April is the students’ day, but everyone in <strong>Uppsala</strong> joins in. The dayincludes rafting on the river Fyris, a herring lunch, the champagne gallop inone of the student associations’ gardens, a picnic in one of the many parks,the student cap ceremony at Carolinabacken and the evening celebrationswith choral singing at the castle’s Gunillaklocka (bell) or a bonfire. If you wantto end the evening in style, you can go to a ball at the castle.
