The primary need of Australian documentarymakers is additional resources for production, and FilmAustralia will develop targeted initiatives to raise fundsthrough government and non-government sources.Film Australia will also use its resources and expertiseto maximise production opportunities for documentarymakers through the development of collaborativebroadcaster relationships and alternative productionand delivery models.Value + AppealFilm Australia aims to engage and connect with audiences, through television, new media, education and otherappropriate outlets.Despite the recent success of a small number of featurelengthdocumentaries in cinema release, the primaryoutlet for documentary in Australia remains the publicbroadcasters. However, as television and other mediaoutlets develop in the digital age, Film Australia needs toremain nimble and flexible to meet audience expectationsand exploit emerging opportunities. We will developstrategies to extend our reach on digital and non-broadcastplatforms, such as developing DVD and online projects, exploring digital delivery and rights management, andidentifying growth opportunities in the emerging onlineeducation market.LegacyDocumentary production is one of the most importantmeans of creating a considered national record thatextends beyond the reportage of news and current affairs.Good documentary programs interpret and contextualise;they promote understanding and provoke dialogue.Film Australia’s programs deal with matters of nationalinterest or illustrate and interpret aspects of Australian life. This provides for a key pillar in our strategic objectives: theshaping of a social and cultural record of Australia. Includedin this is the occasional need to provide an Australian pointof view on regional or international issues.Film Australia is required by government to own thecopyright of its productions and to manage that copyright onbehalf of the Commonwealth.
